In American cinema, fate is often presented as a path leading to success – especially when it comes to love. People meet, fall head-over-heels for one another, experience a setback or two, then live happily ever after. In films outside of Hollywood, love stories are often more realistic, and more in tune with subjective experiences of love. In real life, you have to learn how to love. You have to know who you are before turning to others for deep-seated romantic connection. Love at first sight, though, does exist in real life. Maybe not a long-lasting, grow old together, kind of love; but a life-altering spark, where you absolutely need to experience a particular person. Blue is the Warmest Color deals with this kind of love. Similar to both her and Stranger by the Lake, Blue revolves around a character who is lost. Unlike those films, though, Blue is epic in scope.

Tom Daley surprised his fans on Monday when he announced via a YouTube video that he was dating a guy – who has now been identified as Dustin Lance Black.
Tom Daley Dating Dustin Lance Black
Daley, 19, and Black, the Academy Award winning Milk screenwriter, have reportedly been dating for several months, according to E! News. Back in October, Black, 39, and Daley were caught on camera leaving The Coffee Bean in Hollywood. Daley’s rendezvous with the openly gay and passionate Lgbt activist failed to inspire widespread speculation about his sexuality, as he had recently denied being gay to The Mirror.
The Olympic diver came out earlier this week in a five-minute YouTube video that highlighted his recent relationship.

Love at first sight? Hardly. According to Diane Kruger, her boyfriend of seven years Joshua Jackson didn't make the best first impression when they began dating in 2006. During a Sept. 17 appearance on TBS' Conan, the Bridge actress explained why she wasn't always so keen on the former Fringe star. "He thinks he asked me out on a date, which is not true, because I did not agree to that. I agreed to have drinks with him," Kruger, 37, said of Jackson, 35. "I actually had plans with someone else for dinner, so I know I didn't say yes to dinner. We were sitting at the bar, and it's nine o'clock, and I'm ready to leave. One Direction attended the Brit Awards in London on Feb. 20 at the 02 Arena and they looked adorable as they hit the red carpet in somewhat matchy suits. Do you think this is their sexiest look yet?
The boys of One Direction are so hot! They showed up to the Brit Awards in suits and we love how Harry Styles tried to stand out in a gray shirt while everyone else wore white and black. Do you think he did this to get Taylor Swift‘s attention?
One Direction Attends Brit Awards
Harry and his fellow British bandmates looked cheeky as ever at the show. But it’s very clear that Harry wanted to be different. Everyone else opted for black and white while Harry only pinned a white flower to his suit jacket.
The guys got to the show just moments after Taylor walked the carpet in a black slit dress.

Taylor Swift, your ex-boyfriend just gave his first interview about your relationship and he’s handling it the totally opposite way than you have been. Harry deserves an apology from you. Here’s why.
Taylor Swift, you are smart and a hugely talented role model, but you publicly dissed your ex Harry Styles during your Grammys performance and he has now refrained from digging right back at you in his first public interview since your breakup. You should really rethink your policy of using your performances and careers to get revenge on all your exes, especially him.
Certainly some of them may deserve it because they’ve just plain been jerks or they repeatedly hurt you by breaking up and trying to make up like it appears Jake Gyllenhaal did. But honestly — you only dated Harry, 18, for a month or six weeks and it seems as if the relationship was...

'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' actress has been married to screenwriter Andrew Upton for 15 years, and she has revealed they got engaged within weeks of meeting each other as they knew they were perfect for one another. In an interview with Britain's The Sun newspaper, Cate said: 'The most romantic moment in my life was meeting my husband. Love at first sight? Yes, it was. 'He proposed two weeks after we met. A straight, old-fashioned proposal.' The 43-year-old Australian beauty - who has three children, Dashiell, 11, Roman, eight, and Igantius, four, with Andrew - didn't have time for a honeymoon after getting married...

Eponine and Marius are not quite star-crossed lovers. They’re the couple that never was. The couple that, had Victor Hugo focus-tested the plot of Les Mis, would have probably won out over the pairing of Marius and Cosette. Scenes would have been rewritten to fulfill that overwhelming reader desire for Eponine to win his heart in the end.
But Hugo and Les Misérables don’t care about giving audiences something nice and pleasant, and frankly, having a crush that doesn’t like you back is the very least of anyone’s problems in 19th century France.

After last week’s big Red John episode, ‘Black Cherry’ took The Mentalist back to its traditional case-of-the-week format on Sunday – with a little bit of Jane’s (Simon Baker) nemesis thrown in for good measure.
The case was fairly standard. The idea of a man trying to escape his past is not a new one by any means, but certainly one that I enjoy. It doesn’t hurt that it shares thematic elements with our favourite Cbi consultant, either. Also, as is seemingly the case a lot these days, I didn’t guess the killer correctly. Well, I did, but I didn’t guess that there were Three killers. As soon as a corporate retreat was mentioned along with a local paper from the same area, I knew the murder would have something to do with ‘what happened’ there.

There’s nothing left to be said in terms of pop music when it comes to Kylie Minogue. Here is a woman who has reinvented herself many times over her the length of her extensive career. She has managed not to only survive, but also succeed in an industry that has seen lots of female artists come and go over the years. Kylie prevailed, her music always one step ahead, her personality as a pop star always touched with a grace that set her apart from the rest.
And it seems like Kylie thought 2012 to be the year to pay homage to her own career. She first released ‘The Best Of Kylie Minogue’ back in June, a plain Greatest Hits compilation that was given to us hand in hand with a new single, titled ‘Timebomb’. Take Israeli director Avi Nesher out of Israel, and he creates celluloid crap of the third order. Consider She (1982) with Sandahl Bergman. Or Doppelganger (1993) with Drew Barrymore? Or even Ritual (2002) with Jennifer Grey? If you haven’t been face-to-face with any of these features, you’re probably being rewarded for accomplishing something quite wonderful in a former life.
But drop-ship Nesher back to his native country, and he can surprise you. Turn Left at the End of the World (2004) is semi-engaging look at the plight of Indian immigrants living in the backwoods of Israel during the sixties. As for The Secrets (2007), here’s an exceptionally fine tale of an Orthodox Jewish young woman who wants to break all the rules by studying the Talmud and living her life as a lesbian. Really a must-see.
Now Nesher’s latest effort, The Matchmaker, is currently trodding down the theater aisles. No confetti is needed.

Well, this could be something interesting. The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight, the young adult novel written by Jennifer E. Smith, is getting a big screen adaptation. And, it looks that Dustin Lance Black will be in charge for the whole thing! Which is a good thing, I guess, especially now, when he [...]

If you really think about the way things have shaken out, the going’s been a little rough for Dustin Lance Black. After an Oscar win on Milk, the screenwriter took his talents to (and, if word is accurate, made us question them with) a directing debut, Virginia, and then went on to script Clint Eastwood‘s leaden, quickly-forgotten J. Edgar. With just two duds, the 3-part name almost became something of a warning sign.
But I’m not going to give up on the guy, so a recent talk with ThePlaylist — wherein he discussed future projects, both on the page and behind the camera — brings news of a few things I can grant my attention. First, and most prominently, Black said that he’s currently writing (and plans to direct) The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight, his adaptation of Jennifer E. Smith‘s young romance novel.

Akin to those star-crossed lovers kept apart by feuding families in a nondescript 16th century play by a popular bard, myself and The Maccabees have faced similar opposition to our relationship. In our case though, unfriendly relatives were replaced by – a festival set in a sweaty tent by DJ Sub Focus whilst wiping dust from my teeth; bleeding the last drop of my heart out to synthpop duo Hurts in a similarly sweaty tent, with a little less dust; and failing to turn up at a Bloc Party gig in New York (The Maccabees were supporting). Love at first sight is a wonderful thing, but sometimes you have to keep looking for a long time to find the right one. There's just no telling how many mistakes and rejects you'll have to go through to get there.
But when it comes to finding your newest movie love, you no longer have to ask "What's Your Number?," because we have the answer right here: Five — as in the five copies of the "What's Your Number?" DVD we're about to give away.
There's no love like free love, and it doesn't get any freer than this, baby.
Details, people: "What's Your Number?" features Anna Faris as a lady who's unlucky at love — or is that just unwise? Looking back over the course of her life, she decides that, statistically speaking, one of her 20 exes must have been Mr. Right and not just Mr. Right Now. So she starts...

“Sailcloth” is one of the live action short films selected for this year’s Oscar shortlist, that stars British actor John Hurt as a man who decides one day to leave his nursing home with his belongings, and take to the sea.

Yesterday the finalist list for short films was announced. This is, of course, much bigger news for the filmmakers in question than the general public who rarely gets the chance to see their work, but it's very much worth noting. In order to qualify to begin with a film must pass numerous gauntlets and be an awards magnet. Who knows. We could all be obsessed with one or three of these filmmakers in 5 to 10 years time if their careers bloom.
The Ten Finalists
Je Pourrais Être Votre Grand-Mère (I Could Be Your Grandmother) (19 min)
Trailer • France • Directed and produced by Bernard Tanguy
Official Synopsis: "A young business lawyer finds that the old Rumanian homeless person, in front of his flat, looks like his grandmother. One night, he makes her a cardboard card: I could be your grandmother. The passers-by become suddenly very generous. Other homeless people ask him a cardboard card.

Out of 107 qualified submissions, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced 10 finalists that will advance to the next round of voting for the Best Live-Action Short Film Oscar. Out of these, three to five will ultimately be nominated for the Academy Award.
Ironically, actor John Hurt stars in two of the finalists: the British shorts Love at First Sight and Sailcloth. Also among the finalists is The Shore, written and directed by the Oscar-nominated filmmaker Terry George (Hotel Rwanda) and starring Ciarán Hinds.

Today the Academy announced the ten films that will advance in the voting process for the 2012 Oscars for Live Action Short out of the 107 films that qualified in the category. Of the ten I was unable to find anything on only one of them as I have trailers for eight of the others and an image for one more. Of the bunch Love at First Sight and Sailcloth are sure to gain attention as both star John Hurt and The Shore features Hurt's Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy co-star, Ciaran Hinds, Hotel Rwanda helmer Terry George directing. I didn't watch the trailers before posting, but the plot for Time Freak sounds a little fun as a neurotic inventor creates a time machine only to get lost trying to make yesterday perfect. Last year I didn't watch the animated or live-action shorts, but this year I hope to do that and include...

It has been a fantastic year for British independent film with Steven McQueen’s Shame, Ben Wheatley’s Kill List and the directorial debut of Paddy Considine, Tyrannosaur, heading up a fine list of nominees.
There was a particularly strong set of nominees competing for the Douglas Hickox Award for Best Debut Director with Richard Ayoade’s wonderful coming of age love story Submarine and Joe Cornish’s Attack the Block being firm favourites here. Lynne Ramsay’s We Need to Talk About Kevin made for a fine return for director Lynne Ramsay and there’s a lot of love for Andrew Haigh’s Weekend, which was represented tonight in two categories.
It’s great to see Paddy Considine’s film do so well, not least the award for Olivia Colman, and the awards represent a very promising time for the British film industry, with some very strong voices emerging in the last year.

Live streaming of the British Independent Film Awards this evening came off much more smoothly than last night's hiccuping and lurching feed from the European Film Awards, which is a damn fine thing, considering that the show was far, far more entertaining. Particularly since host Chris O'Dowd became increasingly inebriated as the evening wore on.
So, the full list of winners and nominees:
Best British Independent Film: Tyrannosaur.
Also nominated: Senna, Shame, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and We Need to Talk About Kevin.
Best Director: Lynne Ramsay for We Need to Talk About Kevin.
Also nominated: Ben Wheatley for Kill List, Steve McQueen for Shame, Tomas Alfredson for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Paddy Considine for Tyrannosaur.
The Douglas Hickox Award for Best Debut Director: Paddy Considine for Tyrannosaur.
Also nominated: Joe Cornish for Attack the Block, Ralph Fiennes for Coriolanus, John Michael McDonagh for The Guard and Richard Ayoade for Submarine.
