Director Stephan Brenninkmeijer got the idea for the film after the release of his previous film Swingers (2002). Several women had approached him with stories about their difficulties as women leading a double life in order to fulfill their sexual needs. He always wanted to explore this idea in a movie, and got the inspiration of a 'torture room' while visiting a vacant house that had a 'sinister basement'. He subsequently wrote the script in three weeks, using many of the quotes he heard from the women in Stella's dialogue.
Chantal Demming was cast as the sexually liberal Stella because she had worked with director Stephan Brenninkmeijer on Lilith (2019) (a movie that wouldn't be finished and released until many years later). Brenninkmeijer praised Demming for not shying away from nudity, and showing a lot of initiative and willingness to experiment in the more explicit scenes.
Due to its explicit nature, the film premiered via Video on Demand. It was briefly screened at the New York Cinekink film festival, as well as the Dutch Film Festival, but outside competition. Among director Stephan Brenninkmeijer, director Martin Koolhoven and film journalist Ab Zagt protested publicly.
The first Dutch film to be directly released exclusively via Video on Demand: Although Claustrofobia (2011) came a few months earlier, it also premiered on other platforms.
