Curiouser and Curiouser...and really BAD.
scootmandutoo28 April 2011
Warning: Spoilers
So much to hate...so little time.

To be fair...I did like something about the film...the opening credits. Somewhat stylish and well done. Who knew that it would be the high point of the movie? Also...there are also a couple of people in this movie that have acting potential. Unfortunately, even the better actors in this film probably still need to keep going to acting class before they should be allowed in a movie.

As the movie progresses the acting reaches new, lame lows. The over-acting gets really unbearable at times.

And the plot?!? This has to be some sort of a bad joke.

A girl chooses to celebrate her 21st birthday at the same location where her mother was slaughtered on her own 21st birthday. Sounds credible to me.

Right off the bat, the movie says "based on a true story." Uh huh. Sure it was. It could have been worse, I suppose...they could have filmed this 'true story' with an unsteady hand-held camera.

As for the murders, the gore is a bit silly. One man spills his guts out after a single stab. In one especially banal, non-murder scene, a girl gets her butt cheeks glued to a toilet seat, but manages to rip herself free, with the help of someone's GAY UNCLE (they only mention the character is gay 72 times).

The really scary part is the special effects person wanted to be identified in the credits. Why? Who would hire somebody so untalented? We learn who the killers are way too soon and with virtually no dramatic tension. And then the convoluted ending just seems like a parody of a horror film. I mean...gee...what could be scarier than the heroine becoming insane, eh? This is the type of flick that fast forward controls were created for.

As for the folks who gave it a 10....I hope you at least collected some decent money for being part of the production.

Alice in Murderland is Terror-ble
Fields20112 February 2011
Warning: Spoilers
There hasn't been many movies I wanted to see at the multiplex lately so I am forced to watched movies at home. The latest being Alice in Murderland, with an intriguing title, and hopes that it would be reminiscent of the old PC game: American McGee's Alice. Those hopes were completely crushed right after those two seconds when I pressed PLAY on my remote.

The opening of the movie starts with some woman who reveals herself to be Alice's mother looking into buying a house. The woman selling her the house looks, well, like some biker chick. She doesn't seem too friendly with her even though Alice's mother has this wholesome joy to her as if she is always happy. Then the biker chick says, "Go down in the basement. There's a surprise." I was expecting to see a finished basement, but instead, it's some killer in a cloak beating her with an ax thus bringing us years later to see Alice.

We are first introduced to Alice being completely zoned out and babbling on how her mother was killed. Then we are greeted to some of the most banal dialogue like: ALICE: "I was just thinking about my mother. She died when she was 21 and I turn 21 this Saturday." Then we are introduced to the characters in this movie, and THERE IS NO ONE TO CARE ABOUT! I was hoping they would all die. There's even this gay teacher who is one of the girl's uncle that's only there to serve to make the audience question if he's the killer or not; otherwise he's just forgotten.

The whole plot point is that it's Alice's birthday and they all want to go to the Glass House (Looking Glass, get it?) to dress up as Alice in Wonderland characters. What's the purpose of this? Not even the writers know as there is nothing but cat fighting, pointless dialogue, and getting high. I can't really fault them on the idea, though, as I had Harry Potter parties myself. Yeah.

So basically it's a slasher film as each of these nasty group of characters gets offed one by one. Now since we the audience has been spoiled by memorable deaths over the years, how did the deaths in this one stack up? Not one single memorable death. Sure, the killer would change it up from a knife to an ax every now and then, but they are mostly forgettable. I will say that they are pretty funny when it happens. After one swing, they turn into bloody messes. There's even one scene where after one knife strike, the victim's innards fall out. I half-expected Machete to use it as a grappling hook.

In the end, there's a really dumb twist on who the killer is (who spends a few scenes dressed up in a ridiculous looking Jabberwockey costume) and a shockingly stupid ending. This film is made by Brain Damage Films, which must really explain the writing in this mess.

No Redeeming Qualities
gregsrants13 June 2011
With an eye-catching title, Alice in Murderland does little (if anything) to keep its audience interested for the long haul. Written and directed by Dennis Devine (Demon Kiss), Alice in Murderland opens with the introduction of Alice's mother who is murdered while house-hunting.

Skip ahead to present day and we meet Alice, the cute and adorable Malerie Grady. Alice has a birthday coming up and her good-looking girlfriends decide to throw her a theme party – an Alice in Wonderland themed party. At the party, the guests will be given costumes that represent characters from the 1865 novel by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson.

Lucky for us, all the costumes are sexy pieces of fabric that would look right at home on any stripper stage this side of Montreal. What should be even luckier for the male geek in all of us is the fact that no members of the opposite sex are invited to the party. So if you take out the male owner of the party establishment who comes dressed as the Mad Hatter, you are left with a wet dream of a bunch of party girls dressed as stripper Tweedle-Dumb and Dee, the Red Queen and others.

But uh-oh, the Jabberwocky is also running through the halls of the building, and he/she/it is intent on leaving a trail of dead rabbit-hole characters in his wake.

What sounds like an interesting premise in the mold of some of the better horror films of the early 80's, Alice in Murderland falls flat – very flat – in overall execution.

I can assert that the blame cannot be placed on the shoulders of the cast. Each of the cast that include names you have never heard of or are likely to hear again, do an admirable job in individual emoting. But the script hardly allows anyone to exploit their inner-actor. Instead, we get mundane situations and even a fight between two girls that is as unbelievable and poorly shot as any in recent memory.

Director Dennis Devine must either have hired all family and friends for the film or he found religion somewhere along the road to the distribution as there is no nudity in a movie that screams for some titty. Even a shower scene neglects to show anything below a neckline and therefore the movie fails to titillate while failing to do just about everything else.

So characters end up living or dying and there is a stupid subplot of a rift between the girls that allows for the stereotypical separation of the pack. But pleeeeease! You want us to believe that these girls are actually friends, that they have a party for Alice at the same residence to which her mother was killed years ago (that's right folks) and that a killer wearing a Jabberwocky outfit is sneaking up on them and chopping them all to bits. Sorry. But not in my fairy tale! All this made Alice in Murderland a terrible film experience. We give it a half star for not using CGI blood, but that's about it. There is no wonder, mystery and hardly any tense-ful danger in Murderland and you should stay clear of this dud.

good idea bad movie
miss_deth_addict28 February 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Where to start, lets start with the reasons why this movie got a 3 and not a one from me. First some actors a minimal acting skills which I have to give them credit for. The story itself isn't so bad (except for the ending). Where did they go wrong with a good idea (because alice in murderland sounds like a good idea at least for someone who is a fan of Alice)? The boring party in which the events take place is boring even for the watchers, the girl who plays Alice shouldn't be allowed to act out of all the cast she was the one with the least acting skill. The poor acting ruined most of the scenes that otherwise could have been good or surprising. The costumes were all cheap sex shop stuff that for some didn't even fit the actresses. The characters are ALL underdeveloped which makes it impossible to grow even remotely attached to any of them. But if you're a fan of cheesy over acted b-series movies you might actually enjoy that movie.

Alice in worst movie ever land
Isabelbrenkley110 January 2012
Warning: Spoilers
The start to this movie is not so bad when I say start I mean the first 30 seconds after those the first 30 seconds the movie story line goes down hill dramatically, the acting was probably the worst part, I think my dog could have been more convincing. I don't actually understand how the movie made it to DVD.

I am actually really upset at the fact I paid £7 for this movie the acting is repulsive the story line is worse and the ending made me want to kill my self I've never seen anything so bad. I seriously recommend you only buy this movie as present for some if you either want to loose them as a friend forever or if it's for your partner make sure you Definitely want to end the relationship because it will end it for you.

As A Connoisseur Of Terrible Horror Films...
dacman121-13 February 2021
I never, and I mean never, write reviews. This one prompted a review. This film is so bad that it approaches being comical. Unfortunately, I do not think they were trying to be campy.

The premise, the acting, the set, the special effects are terrible. There is nothing redeeming here.

For those of you who remember MST3K, Joel and the bots should be forced to watch this one!

I Just Do Not Give A Hoot
gavin69427 October 2013
It is Alice's birthday and her sorority girlfriends throw her a themed party. Everyone comes as their favorite, sexy character from Wonderland. The Jabberwocky was not invited and brings murder and mayhem to the girls' night out.

I wish this was cool. I love Alice in Wonderland, and I wanted to like this at least a little bit, with the costumes and such. We definitely need a really good horror and Alice combination (remember that awesome video game?).

What we get is boring, low video quality and below average acting. Granted, I have seen much worse acting and and video quality, but at least these were not boring...

THIS IS A WARNING
yrjyqjkeh9 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Do not, under any circumstances, watch this "film."

Alice in Murderland is the worst film I have yet seen. I can go ahead and tell you everything wrong with it.

Right off the bat, the movie cover is completely misleading. It has nothing to do with the actual movie itself. If you're expecting to see a young woman named Alice stuck in a terrifying variation of Wonderland, then prepare to be disappointed. You will instead see Alice and her sorority sisters attending a dumb party.

Next we have the mushrooms. Yes, people take mushrooms in this movie. But that's pretty much it, except it makes them do things 100x worse than people with a .9 blood alcohol level.

Then we have a dumb chase scene. One of the characters trips on literally nothing. She was on grass.

Failed attempts at being darkly comedic, check.

Obvious killers, check.

Weird editing, check.

Bad acting, check.

Dumb ending, check.

Perverts, check.

Save yourself an hour and a half of your life by not watching this piece of crap.

Decidedly not worthy of anyone's time
I_Ailurophile25 September 2021
Deciding to watch this despite clear and emphatically poor reception felt like consciously punishing myself for the mixed bag represented in other titles I'd chosen in the same night. From the very, very beginning there is an absolute lack of subtlety in the screenplay (weak overall narrative, threadbare scene writing, thin characterizations, hackneyed dialogue), camerawork, direction, editing and transitions, arrangement of scenes, blood effects and gore, costume design, choreography, acting, and music. In every possible way the production feels purely amateurish - a first student film, perhaps, created by barely attentive beginners; a passion project among friends, except with scarcely any passion, fun, or active interest from anyone involved; or a schlocky, low-grade, themed porn flick, except without any nudity.

Considering the dialogue, the other features of filmmaker Dennis Devine, the wardrobe selections generally, and an early scene in which every female character is dressed only in a bikini - the latter comparison seems most apt.

'Alice in Murderland' is pointedly terrible, nearly entirely bereft of all value. There's infinitesimally little praise I can offer, but I find myself surprised that I've any at all. Against all odds, there's a single unexpected turn in the plot. There's an iota of cleverness in the sudden disappearances and reappearances of the "Cheshire Cat," Kat - though the underlying predictability is rotten. The characterizations of "Tweedledum" and "Tweedledee," or Donna and Dee, allow actresses Heath Butler and Jennifer Field to wholly lean into the vapid ignorance of the roles. And the latter lends to the single laugh that the entire movie provided in a small exchange of dialogue: "Where's Donna?" "Glued to the toilet." "Oh. Of course she is."

What's remarkable is that I gather a minor sense that the cast are genuinely capable actresses. Bad acting is one matter; acting under the strict terms and guidance of a director is another. The two are certainly distinct, and I'm inclined to think in this case the latter is true. Moreover, to glance at their collective credits reveals some tawdry nonsense much like Devine's oeuvre, yes, but also a number of recognizable films and series that can't be a mistake. To that point: The only reason I stumbled across this title in the first place was that I greatly admired the performance in the outstanding 2019 short film 'Nova' of Kelly Kula, and in browsing her credits, found she featured here as Kat. Yet suffice to say, 'Alice in Murderland' is a far cry from that fantastic horror short, or pretty much anything else. Devine's writing and direction forces everyone involved into such abjectly blunt, forthright, unsubtle, over the top, tacky performances that it's extremely difficult to truly distinguish, on the basis of this feature alone, who may or may not have real acting skill, were they given opportunity to demonstrate it.

I'll allow this: I don't know if Devine is just that awful of a filmmaker, or if every unseemly flaw of the picture is intentional. Considering how many other movies he's made, I suppose it's hard to think that he altogether doesn't know what he's doing. Yet if the horridly tedious pablum is knowing and willful, making a deliberately rancid movie - job well done, I guess, but why? To what purpose?

There is, I dare say, a tiny modicum of fun to be had in the final length of the feature, and again, there are a few elements that seem marginally worthwhile, at least by comparison. This isn't the absolute worst movie I've ever seen - but it's close enough. Any positivity is overwhelmed and subsumed in the grotesquely dull, possibly premeditated mediocrity that the film otherwise represents. What minuscule value one may find here is not worth sitting through these 90 minutes, especially not with so many other fine movies available to watch. A few pinpricks of light are not remotely enough to redeem the dark void of shallow, uninteresting, and vulgarly, garishly blatant rubbish that is 'Alice in Murderland.'

You've been warned.

Cult Classic in the making?
jirish3526 January 2014
OK, the "Based on true events" at the opening of the movie; That really chaps my behind. No need for movies to falsely advertise that B.S. Totally uncalled for, and I am sick of movie's taking advantage of it. Moving on. 'Alice in Murderland' is not as bad a movie as these reviews claim. Remember, it is a B-movie. These are not A-list actors & actresses. They actually did a pretty good job and the movie was pretty hilarious with a ton of funny scenes. It had it dull and lame moments. But obv, you are going to have some give & take with a B-movie. Now, this movie is not for everybody. But honestly though, if you like slashers and do not mind B-movies, then you will prob enjoy this movie. Or you will at the very least find it watchable. It has a been gathering a loyal fan-base on its Facebook page and is slowly developing into a cult classic. HONEST TO GOD.

You would definitely not be giving it a rating as low as these people are, such as these 1's and 2's which I just don't understand. These people who give 1's and 2's will then complain and say they wish they had the time or money that they wasted on the movie back. Like they didn't have the choice to shut off the movie while it was on. I fast forward through some parts of bad movies sometimes and finish them in half the time. And still get the basic plot beginning middle and end of the movie. As for these 1's and 2's they give out like candy to kids, I mean I have seen some awful, and I mean awful movies. And those are 1's and 2's. This is nothing, compared to those. Not even close. Not even in the same ball-park. I mean seriously, a 1? Gimme a break? People who give movies a 1, I don't even see how they would watch the whole thing to the end.

The person who said Alice is the worst actor in the movie is a complete maroon (call it a color) & couldn't be more wrong than if he was a blind man shopping for a green t-shirt on his own. Except for Alice's grand finalé. Her acting was up there with the best of em'. Dee(meow)& Samantha (chef?), (bf), (black kid), were all much, much worst!!! A 10 second sketchy & shady laugh by Alice that was horrible acting and probably the worst in the movie does not make her the worst actress in the movie. It was only a 10 second scene. The rest of the main characters acting was decent. And her friend Maleroe. Her acting was very good in leading the cast. She def carries the movie. She is hot. A dime-piece, a 10!!! Her finale at the end is one for the books and I will tell you what. Big screen TV and high def if you can.

One of the worst movies I have seen and I devour low budget horror movies
dswiftoc28 February 2014
This movie started with an interesting idea but that's about all it has going for it. The look is distracting at best, the acting is very flat (most likely a result of script or directing limitations and not a reflection on the actors) the movie just doesn't seem to know what it wants to be and thus goes in no direction. The whole thing seems like someone said hey lets break out the camcorders and make a movie this weekend, came up with a good title and a workable story idea and then just stopped thinking at that point. The dialog alone will probably be enough to get you to shut it off about ten minutes in, if not the poor visual execution will prevent you from making it much longer.

One of The Worst.
BruceAndTheBeast26 December 2017
I decided to rope a friend into watching this crap with me. They haven't talked to me since..."Alice In Murderland" is without a doubt one of if not the worst movie I've ever seen. Not a single thing about this project could be considered "good" or even competent. I am hesitant to give this a 1, as the number 1 is a positive integer. This film is deserving of a negative ranking. IMDB needs a 0 rating option.

Incredibly talky no budget horror/murder mystery
selfdestructo25 December 2021
All of the girls at the party look like they are dressed for a porn shoot. Alice in Murderland gets an extra star for that (zero nakedness, BTW).

Some hammy deaths, awkward bursts of exposition, a story that could only be written for a bad horror movie, and when the "sinister" killer is revealed (and they play it sinister), his/her performance is flat-out cringeworthy. Good for a few unintentional laughs, and the ladies' slutty outfits are nice to gawk at. Worth it if you can find a copy at the $1 store.

Decent Enough, If You Enjoy the Genre
Zeppelin7520 November 2013
I like Slasher Horror movies and this one is a decent enough way to kill 90 minutes. (no pun intended)

If you like the kind of movie where random teens go to a place and start dying, then this movie fits that profile.

I don't judge acting too seriously, I guess it can be considered poor, but I personally don't really care about that.

Some of the characters are alright, I particularly enjoyed the teacher for some reason.

There is one very funny scene, although 95% of the scenes are pretty bad.

I've seen far worse production on low budget movies. The kill scenes aren't great, but at least they aren't hidden/cut-away scenes.

The overall production is high enough.

Nothing special, but entertaining enough to keep my attention, I didn't walk away or feel like turning it off throughout the duration.

If you can ignore some of the illogical scenes/dialogue and some of the many errors, then it is good enough to watch once to pass the time.

Not sure why all the hated
deadgirlsamara30 January 2019
I held off on watching this due to the reviews here. Rated 1.9 and bad reviews, I don't know why. Expecting the worst, I got a movie that wasn't soft core porn, like someone suggested. It wasn't bad, nothing to write home about, but still decent. If you're looking for a movie that isn't the greatest, but has some charm, then look no further

Some things cannot be unseen...
evilmonk-matt14 February 2014
Warning: Spoilers
It took three tries, but I made it through this..."movie". I like to try and write a bad review with some sort of constructive criticism, but there is nothing redeeming about this. It's bad. I watched it on Netflix, thankful to have not paid for it, and you don't have to take my word for it. Watch it. You'll soon find out that the folks that gave this anything other than a '1' are either: trolling, or directly involved with the filming. The acting is horrible. Horrible. The characters aren't developed in any sense. You get a little back story on the heroine's mother. That's about the extent of it. The premise is also terrible. The lead character goes to the place her mother was murdered, and father disappeared, on her birthday, to "figure it all out", in classic cliché' fashion. A 'no guys' party. A Alice in Wonderland party. Her friend's uncles house who is also a teacher or a guidance councilor or something like that. To be honest they may have said exactly what he does, but it's so boring, just staying awake for the duration is an accomplishment, but I'm not sure if I would be proud of it. Even the look of the movie is awful. Shot with a Handi-cam, and it shows. The sound does nothing to redeem it either. Lackluster and applied to situations where it doesn't belong. The characters don't even seem to care that they are being killed off. As if they are being inconvenienced, like having their car keys lost. The special effects are bad and there isn't anything new or special under this sun. It's too bad. And the scene at the end, where the chick is insane and is supposed to be "laughing maniacally". Seriously? The most uncomfortable thing I have EVER seen. The director was asking her to open her mouth as wide as she could and force this stuttering mess out of the hole in her face. Even the other actresses in the scene are disturbed and uneasy with what they see shaping up in front of them. Their expressions say: "You're not seriously going to use that, are you?!" The idea of Alice in Wonderland turned into a horror is a compelling idea, but in these hands it could not have turned out any worse than this. Sometimes I watch movies like this, just on a goof, or to riff on it with my wife. She was asleep in minutes and I would need two more attempts just to make it through. The trend these days seems to be: if it fails as a horror film, then it was just a totally intentional move. "We made a spoof. It's SUPPOSED to be ridiculous!" This beast can make no such claim though. It fails on either front, or both at once. It is neither funny or scary. NO. REDEEMING. QUALITIES. It's your candle to burn though.
