For at least the past few years, we have covered the Toronto After Dark Film Festival annually. Jeff Konopka attends the festival every year, and he usually brings some really good coverage back with him. I am always jealous when he’s there, because I’m listening to the footage that he has recorded, hanging out in a crowded bar talking with filmmakers, as well as other journalists attending the event. It sounds like a lot of fund, and I’d love to make the trip one year. Some of my favorite recent films were shown at Toronto After Dark. Cheap Thrills, Motivational Growth, The Machine, We Are What We Are, Resolution, The Battery, one of my all-time favorite films, Some Guy Who Kills People, and much, much more. Recently, the first 10 films for the 2014 festival were announced, and among them were some highly anticipated films. I will list them all below,...

Motivational Growth is the absurd horror-comedy by writer/director/editor Don Thacker that calls to mind other absurd films in a similar vein such as Return of the Killer Tomatoes or Little Shop of Horrors.
30-something Ian (Adrian Digiovanni) is a recluse, hiding from the world in his brothel of an apartment where he watches bizarre shows on his ancient TV and contemplates suicide. Oh and then there’s The Mold (voiced by Jeffrey Combs) in Ian’s bathroom, a smooth talking entity that tries to get Ian to clean up his act. But The Mold is up to something sinister and its plans go beyond the quiet life of Ian in what ends up a battle of good and evil.

It would be impolite to speculate on the, ah, use of illicit substances of a stranger, but after watching Motivational Growth, it is difficult to avoid doing so. The movie just isn’t something you see every day.
Ian (Adrian Digiovanni) is a recluse living in a filthy apartment. He estimates that he hasn’t gone outside in 16 months. He also hasn’t cleaned or done much of anything in that time, save for watch TV. His television is a classic, one of those huge old ones, “a cabinet with a TV in it,” as Ian says.

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by IndieCan Entertainment. Director/writer: Don Thacker. Cast: Jeffrey Combs, Adrian Digiovanni, Danielle Doetsch. Don Thacker's sophomore feature film deals with a very depressed man. This semi-hermit lives a life of complete solitude, until his television, Kent, breaks down. Yes, the protagonist has named his television. Then, the film seems to scatter all over the place, with Thacker experimenting with story ideas. The story is not very cohesive as Ian (Adrian Digiovanni) wanders around the same set over and over again. Minor characters are introduced throughout the film, but this is a film about Ian. This is also a film in which Ian dialogues with the camera and the viewer, while breaking the fourth wall. Motivational Growth offers a few interesting narrative ideas, but nothing feels fleshed out. In the story, Ian is a desperate man. He is living a lonely life,...

In anticipation of it’s VOD/DVD release, a new trailer has been released for Don Thacker’s feature-film debut and sleeper festival-hit, Motivational Growth, which stars genre-legend Jeffrey Combs (Re-Animator, From Beyond).
In Motivational Growth, Ian Foliver (Adrian Digiovanni), a depressed and reclusive man in his 30s, finds himself taking advice from a growth in his bathroom after a failed suicide attempt. The Mold (‘Re-Animator’ star Jeffrey Combs), a smooth talking fungus born of the filth in a neglected bathroom, works to help Ian clean himself up and remodel his lifestyle. The Mold has big plans for Ian, but they may not be as innocent as they seem. A labyrinthine-narrative follows, full of colorfully-drawn characters and gruesome body horror. “The Mold knows, Jack. The Mold knows.”
The DVD release will include a commentary track (with actors Jeffrey Combs and Adrian Digiovanni and director Don Thacker), a photo gallery and trailers.

If there’s one film that I saw in 2013 that stayed with me longer than any other, it is Motivational Growth. Most of you haven’t had the chance to see it yet, but I have a feeling that when you do, you will love it as well. I’ll admit, that if somebody had told me that I would absolutely love, a film about a guy talking to a huge pile of intelligent mold that is growing in his bathroom floor, I’d probably have told them that they were insane. It’s an absurd premise, but some of the greatest films of all time have absurd premises as well. Motivational Growth is shot, acted, and edited so exceptionally well, that I think it will appeal to many, even those that aren’t usually a fan of oddball indie horror flicks. The details of a North American release of the film have surfaced.

Every year we all make these “Best of” lists, and every year I bitch and moan about having to assign arbitrary rankings to the movies that I enjoyed. Actually, scratch that. Every year I bitch and moan about it, and then cheat in some way, negating the ranking all together. 2013 is going to be no different. I think “ranking” your enjoyment of all of the films you consumed throughout a year is pretty useless. I don’t know about you, but I enjoy a plethora of different films for different reasons, and it is impossible for me to say that my enjoying of Film X is any better than my enjoyment of Film Y. So, instead, here is a multi-part list of films I saw in 2013 that I found to be exceptional, and worthy of your time. Some of these will have not been released yet, but they’re going to be here anyway,...

The Mold knows, Canada. The Mold knows. As Don Thacker's Motivational Growth continues to pick up awards on the festival circuit, it certainly caught the eye of Indican Entertainment when it played here in Toronto at After Dark. So much so, that they have acquired Canadian rights for the film and will release it on multiple platforms in 2014. "I am terrifically excited to be working with Avi and Justin for the Canadian release of Motivational Growth. IndieCan absolutely understands the unique and sometimes challenging lens through which the story is told, and I can't imagine a better team to get it out there. They get it. That makes me excited." stated director Don Thacker of the sale. Indiecan rep Justin McConnell adds: "Motivational Growth is a film...

On Friday, October 25th, we took a trip to Sheffield, South Yorkshire, to enjoy three days of premier horror programming at the Celluloid Screams film festival. Take a look in here for some of the fear-filled sights and sounds to come from the Sheffield Showroom Workstation this year.
Nestled next to Sheffield Hallam University, the Showroom Workstation cinema offers a haven for local film buffs, students and artists, and also sports one of the most impressively relaxed café bars of any film screening establishment we've been to thus far. Real ale on tap – kudos! Upon walking through the doors and approaching the box office, your attention was immediately drawn to the selection of severed body parts and cobwebs hanging at head height. This also extended to the bar and concessions stand, lending a nice kooky, spooky feeling to the weekend's events.
Pass holders for the festival also received a complimentary goodie bag on arrival,...

In town for the UK premiere of his film Motivational Growth (review) at Sheffield's Celluloid Screams festival, self-described "Engine of Delight" Don Thacker gracefully sat down with us for a lengthy chat about the film and his work past, present and future. What's in that head of his?
The Mold knows, Jack. The Mold knows...
Dread Central: What was the motivation behind Motivational Growth?
Don Thacker: Well, the motivation was to make a movie (laughs). No... I'd actually pitched a completely different film called 'Flexure', which is this awesome sci-fi love thriller that I want to make. I'd actually written it, and I spent a couple of years at Fermilab, the National Accelerator laboratories in Illinois and was visiting there a couple of times a week doing research. I have some guys over there who want to be consultants on the picture. It's a story about a guy who...

The 2013 Edition of Toronto After Dark Film Festival has now passed the halfway mark. Generally, Monday night is a bit lighter because folks are exhausted from the last four nights of missing sleep, drinking, and trying to talk over loud music and people at the pub. However, last night featured a solid pair of films, and the auditorium over at the Scotiabank Theater was packed.
Things kicked off with Programmer Justin McConnell (who also directed the excellent Skullworld) introducing the first short and feature film of the evening. As usual, he kept it to the point, but he still had significant enthusiasm for the films.
The first short, Down Bob, also had a brief intro from its writer/director/star, Adam Schafer. The film was one of the longer shorts of the festival – clocking in at eleven minutes – but it was also one of the most enjoyable. It focuses on...

Sunday at Tadff is always a tough day. Generally speaking, from a reporting perspective, it means that you’ve been out until all hours of the morning for the last three nights, probably imbibed a bit more than necessary, lost a lot of sleep, and then spent all of your free time writing reviews, editing interviews, etc. As such, it is almost always the one day that I get to the theater either late, or right before the first movie of the afternoon.
This year, that first movie was the World Premiere of Silent Retreat, a story about a teenager who gets sent to a rehabilitation camp in the woods where escape attempts lead to encounters with something that lurks beyond the trees. Due to some trouble finding seating in the packed auditorium, I missed the theatrical showing, but I am hoping to be able to get a chance to...

Silent Retreat
Written by Corey Brown
Directed by Tricia Lee
Canada, 2013
Opting for a rehabilitation program over jail time, Janey (Chelsea Jenish) discovers the hidden ramifications of her choice when she arrives at an isolated camp, where she is told by the strict “doctor” (Robert Nolan) that she, and the other young women at the retreat, can’t talk to or interact with each other. Things are compounded when Janey discovers that people aren’t the only things that inhabit the area.
The idea of using extreme silent treatment to control and condition the young women to the doctor’s misogynistic standards is an interesting approach to attacking traditional gender roles and patriarchy (the place is run by the doctor and his two sons, a nice homage to A Clockwork Orange), but the way in which Silent Retreat goes about this is often heavy-handed and conspicuous. Also, for a story...

The 2nd annual South Texas Underground Film Festival, running Oct. 3-6 in Corpus Christi, Texas, is a massive celebration of international alternative cinema, including plenty from Texas filmmakers, of course.
The fest opened on the 3rd with the drop-dead hilarious comedy Pictures of Superheroes by Austin filmmaker Don Swaynos.
But, there’s still plenty more to see throughout the jam-packed weekend wherein films screen from morning until, well, early into the next morning.
The film that’s absolutely not to be missed is the screening on the 6th at 10:30 a.m. of Savage Witches, the amazing celebration of the art of filmmaking by British directors Daniel Fawcett & Clara Pais. A colorful spectacle of multiple filmmaking styles, Savage Witches is a real joy to experience.
Also to be on the lookout for are on the 5th at 11:00 a.m. is the new rockin’ documentary Mondo Fuzz: Twilight of the...

Jeffrey Combs. You can put this man in Anything and we'll watch it. Especially if he's portraying a nasty giant talking creature with a penchant for getting its victims off of their asses before taking a bite out of them!
From Imagos Films and director Don Thacker comes Motivational Growth starring Adrian Digiovanni, Jeffrey Combs, Danielle Doetsch, Ken Brown, Pete Giovagnoli, Robert Kramer, and Erica Highberg.
Synopsis
Ian Folivor (Adrian Digiovanni), depressed and reclusive, finds himself taking advice from a fungal growth after a failed suicide attempt. The Mold (Jeffrey Combs), a smooth talking chunk of Aspergillus born from the filth collecting in Ian's neglected bathroom, works to win Ian's trust by helping him clean himself up and remodel his lifestyle. Ian attracts the attention of a neighbor, Leah, and begins to receive strange messages from his broken TV that make him realize that The Mold may not be as...

Okay, so I'm cheating a little bit because Jeffrey Combs isn't actually in the teaser trailer. But he is in the film, and I'll admit that this teaser certainly captures one's attention. So come on in and check it out anyway. It certainly looks promising!
The premise is as follows: Ian Folivor (Adrian Digiovanni), depressed and reclusive, finds himself taking advice from a fungal growth after a failed suicide attempt. The Mold (Jeffrey Combs), a smooth talking chunk of aspergillus born from the filth collecting in Ian's neglected bathroom, works to win Ian's trust by helping him clean himself up and remodel his lifestyle.
I'm not the biggest fan of low budget indie horror in this modern age, I'll admit. More often than not it looks like filmmakers don't have a clue what they're doing. But Motivational Growth looks different. The teaser doesn't show much, but it does hint at...

For those of you who have yet to see Stuart Gordon's superb 1985 Re-Animator and its 1989 sequel, Bride of Re-Animator, allow me to introduce you to Doctor Herbert West, the titular Re-Animator, portrayed by the one and only Jeffrey Combs. What is Combs up to these days? We were lucky enough to catch up with him for an exclusive interview to find out.
Before we look forward, however, let's take a quick look back at Combs' career:
Through his seriously questionable research and macabre experiments in Re-Animator, Combs' Doctor West pioneers a serum that brings dead tissue back to life – often with disastrous consequences. Playing a man dangling so precariously on the edge of genius and lunacy -"I will not be shackled by the failures of your God!" - is no cakewalk for any actor, but Jeffrey relished the challenge, turning out one of the most entertaining madman performances...
