This was the last of eight Sherlock Holmes adaptations produced by the French Éclair company in Britain with Georges Tréville as Holmes, with production personally supervised by Arthur Conan Doyle himself. It is the only one known to survive.
Although Watson plays an important role in Arthur Conan Doyle's original story, including shooting Rucastle's dog, he is not part of this adaptation.
