A still from Hola Venky!
A new film club in Pune, initiated by the students of Symbiosis Institute of Media & Communication (Simc), has come up with a novel idea. The club will charge a nominal entry fee (Inr 50 for now) and give all the money to the filmmaker.
“We simply want to watch some good Indian indie cinema and support the scene while we’re at it,” said Visvak Sen, a founding member of the film club.
Called Viman Talkies, the club will kick off on August 16 with the screening of Sandeep Mohan’s Hola Venky! which was one of the inspirations for starting the club.
Viman Talkies plans to have fortnightly screenings at a venue which can seat 200 people. Hemant Gaba’s Shuttlecock Boys and Srinivas Sunderrajan’s The Untitled Kartik Krishnan Project have been lined up for screenings after Hola Venky!

Srinivas Sunderrajan
Watching Srinivas Sunderrajan’s The Untitled Kartik Krishnan Project (2010) is like traversing a labyrinth; it is a meta film-about a film-within a film.
What it really signifies is an independent filmmaker’s challenging journey of making a film, his obsession with his art and the influence of uncanny extraneous factors on the film that he set out to make.
Following a screening at the Transilvania International Film Festival in June, the film was recently presented at the Naya Cinema Festival in Mumbai. Sunderrajan, all of 26, answers a few questions about the making of The Untitled Kartik Krishnan project.
What was the original idea of the film when you started? What did the original script comprise?
The original idea behind making the film was to collaborate with people I knew (in whatever capabilities they could) and make a product that would help us evolve creatively. I called up Kk...

Boglarka Nagy, a film writer and festival programmer from Romania writes on Indian movies at the Transilvania International Film Festival, Cluj, Romania, 3-12. June 2011.
One of the major film events in Eastern Europe is the Transilvanian International Film Festival in Cluj, Romania, that throughout its existence of ten years has brought many highlights of the international film scene to a city of 3,50,000 people who may not have had another chance otherwise to welcome directors and actors like Catherine Deneuve, Wim Wenders, Michael Radford, Julie Delpy and Harvey Keitel. But these names are not the real value of this film festival for the Romanians, it’s rather getting to know about what goes on in the film industry across the world and to let the international professionals know about the lately more and more popular Romanian cinema – this is though generally valid for most big film festivals: they are a way...
