Felt more like South Park
bmorreale-9423410 February 2022
I'm glad to see the show has begun to go back to working with other ideas. First episode in a while where it was funny. Hoping for bigger episodes soon.

Definitely a reference to the New Amazon LOTR series
josepwade18 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
South Park manages to make great satire once again. I believe they are making a reference to the new Amazon LOTR series, by saying that trying to change and add black characters to where they don't belong in order to seem not racist, may be racist in itself. Retroactively changing the Canon of a series, in order to seem more politically correct, is done more and more, but the lack of a race in a TV show/movie doesn't (or shouldn't) instantly equate to racism. They retroactively change the Canon of the south park universe,by changing Tokens name to Tolkien, but Randy's attempts to be inclusive are only for profit,no different than TV shows adding random people from different races just for profit.

Great episode.

Great effort
ExpletiveDeleted117 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
After all these years, it is revealed that Token's name is actually spelled "Tolkien". Of course it was only Stan who didnt realize this and he now feels like a racist.

The most hilarious thing about this episode is, that they actually made the effort and "fixed" all the descripitons on the homepage with the "correct" spelling.

E.g. Episode "World War Zimmerman" - the description now reads: "Cartman sees Tolkien as a threat to all humanity."

Or "Here comes the neighbourhood" - the description is now: "Tolkien is tired of being the only rich kid in town, and succeeds in attracting several other wealthy families to South Park."

'Band In China' crossed with 'With Apologies To Jesse Jackson'
astrastarriver10 February 2022
TLDR: If you like either of the episodes above, I would recommend giving this a try!

While maintaining.the feel of modern South Park, but still managing to cover the same area as previous episodes, this episode made me giggle like a schoolgirl with a crush. Pajama Day, while funny, was a bit more mellow (that is generally to be expected with season premieres) While I won't delve into spoiler territory, this episode will make a long-time South Park fan uneasy, but for a reason you wouldn't expect. Looking forward to more!

Although we're all sick of Tegridy Farms, I am very hopeful for this! (Although, I am a lot fonder of Tegridy Farms than I should be.)

(!!SPOILERS!!) South Park Studios has since changed every mention of Token and replaced it with the 'corrected' spelling. A very nice touch, and made me consider if his name has always been Tolkien and I lost my mind.

They should rename this episode, '20 minutes of gaslighting and making longtime South Park fans pleasantly uncomfortable.'

Best gas lighting ever
colek-3711717 February 2022
Is Trey and Matt just know the right formula on how to make people feel extremely yo're extremely guilty and it worked It honestly was the best 20 minutes of gas lighting that I really have ever seen I think the story line will get a little bit better with Tolkien's family moving on the farm now and Randy finally having some competition.

Another decent episode
mattprice-5362010 February 2022
This episode didn't have a political leaning and it wasn't partisan so anyone laughing at those ''Trumptards!'' or those ''left-wingers'' have completely forgot to just laugh and enjoy. Personally, I'm a bit tired of the Tegridy subplot but to each their own.. However, it's the plot with Stan and Token that made this episode great. In fact, Randy's feud with ''Token'''s dad is great too. I did get the vibe though that this episode was poking fun at white guilt though. But all in all, it's not an explicitly partisan message. Not even a 'political' episode at that. This episode wasn't amazing but it still proves how wildly consistent South Park is even after 20 something years. The last few seasons haven't been amazing and I would argue that Seasons 4-10 were the peak. However, I'm still tuning in weekly to watch it so Matt and Trey are doing something right.

8/10.

Long live Token and long live South Park!

I cannot wait to see more of this season because I already consider this as one of my favorite episodes. If you remember the old south park and still a fan of it never miss a chance to watch this episode.

Are we horribly racist?
Laqshayaroraofficial10 February 2022
Another super cool episode, Randy feels like a slim adult version of Eric Cartman! Some unknown facts of token are revealed in this episode, also we might be racist!

Where to even begin!
dybae19 February 2022
Well this is an interesting one to analyse based on other reviews.

Let's get a couple of things straight first. South Park is not Woke, South Park is not racist. They despise both these groups equally.

Nothing makes me happier than seeing Woke people giving this 10/10 for being Woke and racist people giving it 1/10 for being soft on Woke. It's satire, not literal, you've both missed the point. South park are mocking the woke movement that tries to treat minorities differently by using quotas and other discriminatory methods to empower them. Guess what, black people and other such groups don't need young white people giving them a hand, that's racist and offensive. We can all support all people but singling people out, even if you think it's for a good reason, based on the colour of their skin is racist. That's why this is satire, this is who South Park is mocking.

I wondered how South Park would be able to survive in todays cancel culture but I shouldn't have doubted them. All they had to do was be so satirical that woke people would think they were being literal. Genius as always. It also puts the right wing racists off the show because they think it's gone soft so that's a positive too.

Ultimately can we just treat each other as equals and individuals based on what we say and do rather than arbitrary groups we belong to.

Intention and Outcome, dear Watson
SureCommaNot10 February 2022
Really is an interesting episode in a lot of ways, especially as societal conversations about racism shift -- caring less about intention and more about outcome.

Even so, it sure stretches my suspension of disbelief, to find it plausible that so many characters mispronounced "Tolkien Black's" name for 20+ seasons. Ignoring the L and pronouncing Tolkien as "Token" is almost as bad as pronouncing Sherlock's name as "Homes" instead of "Holmes," but people still know what you meant to say in the latter case.

Retconning is usually a dangerous game, and this episode makes me want to go back and see how many times Token's name appeared in written form (written by characters other than Cartman).

Another pretty boring episode with a few good parts
jpapanone10 July 2022
Can't give this a 10 9 8 7.

It isn't bad...but again, just boring.

Later episodes of South Park seem to be like this. Just not complete and entertaining from beginning to end.

Tolkien Black
ericstevenson11 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This episode features Randy trying to get more customers at Tegridy Farms by getting black friends. That is, the family of Stan's only black friend. It's revealed that the character's name is spelled "Tolkien" (as in the author) and not "Token" as everyone else thought. You are all racists for thinking that! That was seriously the most hilarious retcon in the history of the show. Hey, I'll have you know I thought he was named after the arcade tokens that people use, thank you very much!

This makes me feel bad for not reading "The Hobbit". I own two of the "Lord Of The Rings" books, although. It was great to see what happened to Tegridy Farms after all this time. I do wish there were more episodes focusing on characters like Cartman. At least unlike Cracked, I know that Sauron wasn't a good guy! He wasn't trying to liberate the Orcs, as they were originally elves corrupted by his predecessor, Melkor! ****

STOP CHANGING VOICES!
lukasbutters14 February 2022
Last two episodes were decent, don't get me wrong. But stop changing voices of your iconic characters! 1st episode it was Mr. Mackey and now Stan? I swear if you change Cartman's or Butters' voice, this show is over for me. Even as a lifelong fan, I can't swallow such changes.

Oh, and since my last review got deleted, I just wanted to add - both episodes had songs and both sucked.

SP is like Led Zeppelin
hwseayy14 February 2022
Everybody's freaking out! Haha people going nuts over mind bending twists and turns, but that has always been South Park. The more attached you get to how life is "supposed to be", the more SP will seem to offend you personally. Trey and Matt are like Led Zeppelin and they're making Physical Graffiti right now. It's new, it's country but it fkn slaps. Just let the episodes soak in and chill.

100% Black owned business
dedmonroland10 February 2022
This episode is very a refreshing shift from the Pajamas episode premiering S25, introducing back the black family into the center of the plot and highlighting albeit very subtle, racial issues in our society. Keeping its originality in hilarious metaphors, the creators of Southpark has again made their fans anticipate what come next.

I am looking forward to see more of token hanging out with the original fours just a change of pace from the recent plots. This episode reveals that Southpark still got it's soul.

Warning: Spoilers
First off best retcon ever! Sorry.. not sorry to the racists who hate this because it's "woke garbage"! Did you feel that way when they made fun of Michael Jackson for being a rich black man? Or the episode where Randy says the N word on Wheel of Fortune? South Park makes fun of pop culture all the time and this is the exact same thing! They are clearly making fun of all this talk in the NFL about how important it is to have more people of Color in the head coaching position.. it's a hot topic issue that.. like for the past 25 years Matt and Trey have been making fun of.. so if your just now upset about it then realize your the one who has changed not them.. Now as for the episode.. I love how they used Stan as the vehicle for the audience.. even in the world of South Park.. it's ridiculous to think that the richest and probably the most intelligent adults in the town would name their child Token.. so having them explain that he's named after the author works so well! Also I too have noticed they weird way Mackey last episode and Stan this episode sound.. and honestly I think it's on purpose and there's a reason that will be explained in the final or close to the final episode this season.. I checked and Stan sounds normal in Pajama day but sounds weird in this one.. I trust Matt and Trey didn't just not notice it.. they did it on purpose.. now I have no idea what that reason is.. my only guess is Aliens abducted them and replaced them with replicas.. silly I know.. but mark my words the strange voices will be a reveal of some sort when it's all said and done..

Hilarious PC-ness...?
Hilarious way of correcting something I'm guessing is no longer politically correct (although that was kinda the point of the OG name to begin with) which South Park has done pretty poorly for the last few seasons but this episode was actually hilarious and felt like a great classic episode.

Losing hope for season 25
lagginggamerxd12 February 2022
One of my favorite thing about south park is how well written the episodes are.

But this episode is so bland they just took a narrative and didn't put any effort in the script.

Just 6 or 7 characters talking for the whole episode, very predictive humor and dragging with boring tegerity randy marsh. Also the voices were off for the characters.

Idk just my thoughts

PS- English is my 3rd language, don't get triggered by my bad grammar.

Where to start with this...
cheap_sunglasses-4158712 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I like the initial set up. But if Token's name was offensive, this is about the stupidest way to retcon the name. There was not many laughs found here. Again i like the initial premise that makes Randy look for Token's dad to add to his farm. But the Token retconning is just a really poor attempt at erasing history.

If you feel bad for your character, give your characters something to do, it just might give them, CHARACTER????? Stan complaining he is a racist for always hearing Token's name as Token, is the worst cop out you could possibly make. All it does is shift focus away from improving Token.

There could have been actual progress for Token's character if they actually desired to, but all I am left qith is Matt Stone and Trey Parker have a lot of issues to sort out.

I am not even the type of fan to think of Token's name as a bad thing. If it was a reaction to network overreach on the early 00's, then I don't see the issue. The issue is this is really lazy writing, and there just are not enough jokes here to keep anyone interested.

Why is Token bad now? Why changing the voices of characters? Lecturing about white quilt at the end of the episode like I as a life long fan am part of the problem?!

South Park has gone from hero to zero!

Disappointing start to a retroactive punishment.
darcopiate24 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I usually watch shows with subtitles. This would be the third time I've watched SP from beginning to the current end. While watching SP on HBO max around February 2023, I noticed as early as season 14 that they have retroactively changed Token's name to the empty joke of the character being named Tolkien. Besides an awful spoiler, like many forms of media, they are actively rewriting our forms of entertainment to suit their most proper and just guidelines. As we are not capable of forming our own judgements. Please, we must not only discourage censorship, but actively called it out for it's place trying to establish intellectual guidelines for out thoughts.
