Soup of the Evening, Beautiful Soup
Here's another fine Jam Handy film, this one promoting soup for the Campbell Soup Company. Jamison Handy's company produced slide shows and films that showed consumers how to operate devices. This led into promotional films of occasionally surprising subtlety. In this one, for example, Campbell Soup is never mentioned by name; we don't even see a stack of its well-known red-and-white labelled cans until eleven minutes into its 13-minute length, and then it's on to shots of other supermarket products.
So what does it talk about for the rest of the time? Mostly airy nonsense about the history of soup, ancient ballads about soup, cartoon snippets about soup, the deliciousness of soup, anything to make you think of soup when you're in the soupermarket and wondering what you should make for souper.
