We knew something was on its way from Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski but we weren’t expecting this: a new animated movie from Warner Bros. Animation and WB Home Entertainment.
Straczynski described it as: “Classic Babylon 5: raucous, heartfelt, nonstop, a ton of fun through time and space, and a love letter to the fans.”
It might not be as well known as his comic-book work, but Straczynski actually has a background in animation – writing episodes of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, She-Ra: Princess of Power, Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors, Captain Power, The Real Ghostbusters, and other 1980s action favorites.
We know that Bruce Boxleitner is back – which is also fitting, as he’s got some hefty voice acting chops, reprising his most famous other science fiction role for the 2012 show Tron: Uprising – but we’re going to have to wait another week for more details.

After years of anticipation, Disney is gearing up to return to the Grid with a third installment in the Tron film series. The sci-fi action franchise has seen various actors in the main cast since the original movie hit theaters in 1982. But this time around, fans are not happy to learn who’s slated to take the lead role in the third film, Tron: Ares.

The original Tron starred Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn, a video designer transported into his game design. When Alberto Mielgo was developing his animated short film, “The Windshield Wiper,” he knew he didn’t want to do traditional family-friendly animation. He found himself coming back to a theme he’s always been drawn towards: relationships. “I kind of end up using it in many of my projects. I feel that nowadays, love is evolving together with society and now society has drastically changed over the last decade,” Mielgo tells us during our recent webchat (watch the video interview above). Focusing on this theme led to him going down many different paths that would help lead him to what he wanted to make. “This film talks about where is love nowadays in terms of society. It’s basically what is social love rather than what is love now nowadays.”

Disney has released a wonderfully charming new trailer for the upcoming Disney+ film, Lady and the Tramp. The film is a retelling of the classic 1955 animated classic that follows a pampered house dog named Lady and a tough but lovable stray named Tramp, who embark on an unexpected adventure. Despite their differences, they grow close together, form a relationship, and come to understand the value of home.
The movie has a talented voice cast that includes Tessa Thompson as Lady; Justin Theroux as Tramp; Kiersey Clemons as Darling; Thomas Mann as Jim Dear; Janelle Monáe as Peg; Yvette Nicole Brown as Aunt Sarah; and the great Sam Elliott as the voice of Trusty.
The movie actually looks like it could be fun, and one of the aspects of it that I like is that they used real dogs to film it. I’ve been getting a little tired of CGI animals in movies,...

Stampede, the production outfit run by Greg Silverman, has come aboard to produce the pic, which Mielgo will write and direct based on an original concept. The plot is under wraps. Vince Gerardis of Startling will serve as producer, along with John Morgan.
Mielgo was credited as a visual consultant for his early work on Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which ended up winning the Animated Feature Oscar this year. The Spanish animator’s episode “The Witness” from Love, Death & Robots was nominated last week for an Emmy in the Outstanding Short Form Animated Program category.
The new deal was negotiated by Chris Bosco and Anna Pinar of Stampede and Gerardis.

The co-creators of ABC's hit Disney series Once Upon a Time, Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, have officially signed on as executive producers and showrunners of Apple's upcoming reboot of Steven Spielberg's Amazing Stories.
I have high hopes for this Amazing Stories reboot. Judging by what these two guys did with Once Upon a Time, it seems like the series will be in good hands. Horowitz and Kitsis got their start writing for shows like Popular and Felicity. They then joined the writing staff of Lost and ended up writing the feature film Tron: Legacy. They also developed the animated television series Tron: Uprising. Now that Once Upon a Time is done,...

Now that “Once Upon a Time” has ended its lengthy run at ABC, executive producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz are moving on to a new adventure. The duo have signed on as writers and executive producers of Steven Spielberg’s revival of “Amazing Stories” for Apple.

Tron was a film that Disney was ready to turn into the next big franchise. Not only did they spend a pretty penny on the long-awaited sequel, Tron: Legacy, but they also spent money on the TV side of things for the ambitious serialized animated series Tron: Uprising. Sadly, Tron: Legacy didn’t do so well at the box office. It made $400 million, but with its $170 million budget, it wasn’t quite enough to justify a sequel. Similarly, Tron: Uprising sort of fizzled on TV despite its decent execution, and just like that, a potential franchise sort of came and went.
This hasn’t stopped conversations about a sequel from coming out every so often. While it wasn’t a massive hit, there was a loyal fanbase for the franchise who have been hungry for years at the prospect of a new Tron film. Speaking with Collider, Tron: Legacy director...

The Oscar for best animated short film may not generate nearly as much attention as other categories, but it strikes an exciting contrast with the more traditional forms of storytelling found throughout other categories.
These films usually celebrate animators from around the world — including a number of up-and-comers — who apply a range of visual techniques and sophisticated concepts only possible in the animated medium. This year is entirely North American, but still features a lot of different approaches — and yet, ironically, the frontrunner in the category is a very familiar name: Pixar.

Blind Vaysha – Canada – 8 minutes
I did a double take upon hearing Theodore Ushev‘s name alongside his animated short Blind Vaysha during the Oscar nominations because I’ve watched his work progress the past five years. Blind Vaysha – Canada – 8 minutes
I did a double take upon hearing Theodore Ushev‘s name alongside his animated short Blind Vaysha during the Oscar nominations because I’ve watched his work progress the past five years. Yesterday we got a teaser trailer for The Lego Ninjago Movie and it looked surprisingly good. Today, Warner Bros. released a full trailer, and it features a ton of entertaining footage showing off some great humor. This looks like it will be a blast and a worthy addition to the studio's Lego movie franchise.
In this big-screen Ninjago adventure, the battle for Ninjago City calls to action young Master Builder Lloyd, aka the Green Ninja, along with his friends, who are all secret ninja warriors. Led by Master Wu, as wise-cracking as he is wise, they must defeat evil warlord Garmadon, The Worst Guy Ever, who also happens to be Lloyd’s dad. Pitting mech against mech and father against son, the epic showdown will test this fierce but undisciplined team of modern-day ninjas who must learn to check their egos and pull together to unleash their inner power of Spinjitzu.

Today we have our first look at the latest brick-built CG animated film with the release of the The Lego Ninjago Movie trailer. The enormous success of Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Lego Movie, and another certain box office bonanza courtesy of Chris McKay’s The Lego Batman Movie, made this new film an obvious choice.
The toy range on which this new movie is based was originally released in 2011. Quickly adding engaging characters and a cohesive world, blending modern and ancient elements, to Lego’s previous ninja set, Ninjago has spawned dozens of sets and figures. There are whole libraries of books as well as six series of animated TV adventures. A feature film based on the toy range will have a huge audience eager to catch the Masters of Spinjitzu on the big screen.

After The Lego Movie proved to be one of the surprise hits (and also one of the best animated films) of its respective year, Warner Bros. quickly moved ahead on follow-ups. Before an official sequel will arrive in 2019, we’ll be getting two features in the cinematic universe. With this week’s The Lego Batman Movie (our review), we’re also getting the first trailer for The Lego Ninjago Movie ahead of its fall release.
Produced by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and directed by Charlie Bean (Tron: Uprising), the voice cast features Dave Franco, Justin Theroux, Fred Armisen, Abbi Jacobson, Olivia Munn, Kumail Nanjiani, Michael Peña, Zach Woods, and Jackie Chan. Based on the TV show and toy line, it features secret ninja warriors teaming up to fight an evil warlord.
“Ninjago is one of the most insane places in the universe,” Theroux tells USA Today. “So much of it makes no sense.

I had no idea the Ninjago Lego franchise was so big! I guess I could've assumed seeing as it had its own TV show, but geez, what a lineup for a children's film! Collider says the Lego Ninjago film doesn't come out until around 2018, but the cast list has been announced and it's pretty nuts! Take a look:
Jackie Chan is Master WuDave Franco is LloydMichael Peña is KaiAbbi Jacobson is NyaKumail Nanjiani is JayZach Woods is ZaneFred Armisen is Cole
The movie itself is being written by the writers behind the Cartoon Network series and the team of directors includes Tron: Uprising's Charlie Bean. I was a Huge fan of the Tron: Uprising series, so that alone has me excited for this project! The rest is just icing on the cake!

Latest update: The Lego Movie Sequel delayed.
The Lego Movie was an unexpected smash hit. It raked in over $450 million worldwide from a production budget of just $60 million, nabbed an Oscar nomination for Best Song (although the Academy did somehow neglect to give it the nod in the Animation category) and inspired enough enthusiasm from Warner Bros. that the studio promptly green-lit four more Lego-themed cinematic releases.

Disney may have pulled the plug on Tron 3 earlier this year, but Garrett Hedlund has said that film isn't "totally dead".
The actor, who starred as Sam Flynn in Tron: Legacy, said that if a compelling story is developed, the sequel could still take place.
"I haven't been told it's totally dead," Hedlund told ComicBook.com about the film.
"Ever since we did Legacy, we knew that to have another story follow it up, it had to be concrete and exciting," he added.
"Disney needed to have the right story to go forward. I think it was going to introduce some things that were as exciting as Legacy was and then some, though."
Preparations for filming were already underway in Vancouver before Disney decided not to go ahead with Tron 3 back in May.

Olivia Wilde seems pretty relieved after hearing that Tron 3 has been axed.
Disney decided against moving ahead with the third instalment of the sci-fi series last month.
Quorra actress Wilde, along with Garrett Hedlund and director Joseph Kosinski, had been set to reprise her Tron: Legacy role in the new film, but doesn't seem too upset about the cancellation.
Writing on Twitter, Wilde quipped: "Tron fans! Don't trip. Now I don't have to live on seaweed juice and tofu dust for 6 months to fit into a rubber suit."

It looks like it's the end of the line for the Tron franchise - Disney has decided against moving ahead with the third instalment of the sci-fi series.
The news comes after it was revealed that Tron: Legacy stars Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde, along with director Joseph Kosinski, were set to reprise their roles for the new film.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, preparations for filming were already underway in Vancouver before Disney pulled the plug on the project.
The company is reported to want to instead focus on the live adaptation of its animated classics, including the Emma Watson and Dan Stevens version of Beauty and the Beast, following the success of recent hits Cinderella and Maleficent.
2010's Tron: Legacy brought the franchise to a whole new generation of fans, taking roughly $400 million worldwide and spawning the animated series Tron: Uprising, which aired from 2012 to 2013 on Disney Xd.

We've been pontificating today on shared universes, and mega-franchises, and why Hollywood loves them so. One of the main reasons you seen new spins on old material is that it's just less risky than trying to make an original property work. No one may have been asking for a "Tron: Legacy" sequel, but at least audiences know what it is versus trying to do something new. Or in other words, it's easier to sell "Tron" in a shiny new package, with enticing new ingredients, than the more monumental task of selling moviegoers on a whole new idea. So, hence, "Tron 3." And now the brewing project has a title. According to Production Weekly, the three-quel will be called: "Tron: Ascension." It's a similar title to the short-lived animated series "Tron: Uprising," but maybe Disney just likes that kind of wording for the next iteration. Again, this isn't official. Meanwhile, following up on a previous report,...

In what must be extremely relieving news for Warner Bros. as it attempts to transform this year’s animated smash The Lego Movie into a bona fide franchise, it’s been revealed that Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who wrote and directed the first film, are returning to pen the script for The Lego Movie 2.
Previously, it had been unclear whether the duo would return to assist with the sequel in anything more than a producing capacity. Back in June, Lord and Miller, asked to brainstorm a plot for Warner Bros., admitted that they were finding it tricky to ‘sequelize’ The Lego Movie – hardly surprising, considering that the original’s themes of originality and childhood imagination didn’t exactly leave anything open-ended. Now, it appears that the two have cracked the case.

Marvel announced at New York Comic Con that they have started production on an animated series for Guardians of the Galaxy! News of this first popped up earlier in the year, and it's great to see that it's actually happening. The series is coming to Disney Xd in 2015! Daniel Simon’s book Cosmic Motors details the elaborate design of unique futuristic vehicles, revealing 3D models and other renderings of spaceships, racing cars, warships, balloons and more. It’s a neat science fiction art collection from our pals at Titan Books. Simon knows a thing or two about vehicle design, having worked on Tron: Uprising and Captain America: The First Avenger. He recently completed work on Underworld V and is currently writing Arabian Knights for Universal. Bay is producing Cosmic Motors. Whether or not Michael Bay ends up directing Transformers 5, high-concept sci-fi vehicles are clearly still a part of his future. Kyle Ward, who wrote Machete Kills and the new Hitman movie Agent 47, has been tasked with creating the screenplay.Ward will also need to come up with a narrative on which to hang it, since Cosmic Motors in book form is more about concept than story. His book imagines "spaceships, pods, race cars, giant trains, warships and balloons from various planets of the Galaxion system... from concept to completion" via sketches and 3D modelling. There's already a...

The spot is called “Enter the Ninjago,” and it introduces the idea of a Ninjago movie in a very meta way. They basically incorporate a The Green Ninja a.k.a. Lloyd Garmadon from Ninjago into certain climatic scenes of The Lego Movie. Those scenes are reimagined to show the ninja really saving the day rather than Emmett.
It's a clever way to get fans excited for what is to come. The movie is being written by Charlie Bean (Tron: Uprising). Original Lego Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller will be producing.
The Ninjago movie is set in a mystical land where ninja, samurai, and sensei band together to battle dragons and snake men.

With the upcoming release of Phil Lord and Chris Miller's "The Lego Movie" on DVD and Blu-ray, eyes turn towards the future of Warners' franchise - specifically the upcoming Lego spin-off film based on the Ninjago toy line.
Warners have now teased that upcoming Charlie Bean ("Tron: Uprising") directed effort by releasing a 100-second "Enter the Ninjago " promo extra that will be included on the "Lego Movie" disc releases. Whilst not actually showing off anything from the film which is due out in Fall 2016, it does give you an idea of how these ninja characters could work in the Lego universe.
