Like its two recent multi-disc predecessors, Joni Mitchell Archives — Volume 3: The Asylum Years (1972-1975) collects live and studio vault tapes from a particular era in Mitchell’s career. This one gets off to a seemingly unbeatable start. Much of its first quarter is devoted to an entire live show from Carnegie Hall in 1971, months after Mitchell’s landmark album Blue had been released. Sounding at the top of her game, vocally and instrumentally, Mitchell opens with a swooping, vivacious “This Flight Tonight.” Accompanying herself on guitar, piano and dulcimer,...

Joni Mitchell Announces The Asylum Years (1972-1975) Archival Box Set, Shares “Help Me” Demo: Stream
Joni Mitchell has announced a new box set called Joni Mitchell Archives, Vol. 3: The Asylum Years (1972-1975), the latest release in her ongoing archival project. The 5xCD/4xLP package is out October 6th via Rhino, while a demo version of her 1974 song “Help Me” is out now.
The Asylum Years refers to the label that released Mitchell’s early ’70s albums, but it also references the artist’s retreat into British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast, a move she made out of frustration with her treatment by the press. Though she temporarily retired from performing live, the move didn’t hinder her songwriting: the period spawned 1972’s For the Roses, 1974’s Court and Spark, and 1975’s The Hissing of Summer Lawns, records that pushed Mitchell into a more jazz-inspired soundscape.

Joni Mitchell has shared her new live album At Newport, commemorating her surprise appearance at the 2022 Newport Folk Festival.
Co-produced by Mitchell along with fellow Newport performer Brandi Carlile, the album features 12 live recordings. Throughout the performance, Mitchell and Carlile were accompanied by artists including Phil and Tim Hanseroth, Wynonna Judd, Marcus Mumford, Celisse, Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of Lucius, and Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes. The setlist includes Mitchell classics like “Big Yellow Taxi,” “A Case Of You,” and “Both Sides Now.”
Not only was Mitchell’s Newport set her first live performance in over 20 years, but it also marked a rare public appearance since she suffered a brain aneurysm in 2015. Mitchell’s longtime friend, filmmaker Cameron Crowe, wrote about the magic of her return in the live album’s liner notes. (You can get the physical version of the album here.)

That changed Saturday night, as the 79-year-old Mitchell returned to the stage at the Gorge Amphitheater in Quincy, Washington. Joni Mitchell staged her first publicly-announced concert in two decades at the Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Washington on Saturday.
The 79-year-old singer-songwriter initially made her return to the stage in August 2022 during a surprise appearance at the Newport Folk Festival. She subsequently announced a standalone headlining show as part of Brandi Carlile’s three-night concert event “Echoes Through the Canyon.”
With the assistance of Carlile and a bevy of guest musicians, Mitchell presented a 24-song performance that featured some of her most enduring hits. She kicked off the show with “Big Yellow Taxi” from Ladies of the Canyon. Marcus Mumford accompanied her on “Come in From the Cold,” and Blake Mills sat it on “Amelia.”

Joni Mitchell has officially announced At Newport, a live album immortalizing her surprise appearance at the 2022 Newport Folk Festival. The project arrives on streaming services, CD, and 2xLP on July 28th.
Mitchell’s first live performance in 20 years came during Brandi Carlile’s set at the festival, so it’s only fair that Carlile would co-produce the live album with Mitchell herself. Phil and Tim Hanseroth, Wynonna Judd, Marcus Mumford, Celisse, Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of Lucius, and Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes also performed with the artists during the set, which featured Mitchell classics like “Big Yellow Taxi,” “A Case Of You,” and “Both Sides Now.” Mitchell even performed a solo instrumental version of “Just Like This Train” on guitar.

Love is no mystery to Kelly Clarkson. On the latest episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, the singer ran through a cover of “Best of My Love,” the classic 1977 single from The Emotions, alongside her band Y’all. The song was originally recorded with vocals from multiple performers in the girl group, but Clarkson has enough voice to go around. But she did amp up her usual Kellyoke arrangement, this time including a horn section to capture the original emotion of the source material.

Kelly Clarkson reached deep within herself for a moving rendition of Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You” on today’s edition of the “Kellyoke” segment of her Kelly Clarkson Show. Jaco Caraco accompanied her on the Appalachian dulcimer as her voice rose and dropped around Mitchell’s lyrics about being “as constant as a Northern Star” and the song’s famous refrain, “I could drink a case of you, ooh darling/Still, I’d be on my feet.”
The solitude of the performance only heightens the emotion she poured into singing the song.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Cameron Crowe has had a fascinating career trajectory and is responsible for some of the most beloved coming-of-age stories ever put to screen. His feature screenwriting debut came with the groundbreaking teen film "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," shortly followed by the massively influential "Say Anything..." and "Singles." Crowe has a knack for capturing the human condition with so much reverence for people doing their best to make it through life and making audiences feel validated in ways they never thought possible.
For many folks, Crowe had finally "made it" after the success of "Jerry Maguire," the endlessly quotable romantic sports dramedy now better known for its VHS copies dominating every thrift store in America. However, real ones know that Crowe's masterpiece would come many years later with "We Bought A Zoo." Just kidding, it's obviously "Almost Famous," a near-perfect film (just edit out the non-consensual post-od kiss!

When Joni Mitchell finally took the stage near the end of an all-star tribute concert honouring her as this year’s recipient of the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, she opted to perform a cover rather than one of her own songs.
The 79-year-old music legend, who is the first Canadian and only the third woman to be honoured with the accolade, leaned against the piano Wednesday as she crooned a sultry version of “Summertime”, the popular tune from George Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess”, an appropriate choice since the award was named after the composer.
But she wasn’t done. The evening’s other performers came to the stage and surrounded Mitchell as she launched into one of her more popular tunes, “The Circle Game”. The Kids Are All Right (2010)
“Songs are like tattoos.” That’s according to “Blue,” the title track on Joni Mitchell’s fourth album, which turns 50 this month. A half century after Mitchell wrote and recorded those words, it’s clear that Blue has made an indelible mark on the culture. Songwriters from Bob Dylan (“Tangled Up in Blue”) to Prince (“So Blue”) to Taylor Swift (Red) have acknowledged the influence of Blue’s achingly autobiographical lyrics on their own work. Just last year, Rolling Stone declared Blue the third greatest album of all time. And thanks to scores of cover versions over five decades, two of Blue’s torchiest tracks—“A Case of You” and “River”—have become American Songbook standards.
No wonder, then, that filmmakers have frequently tapped into Blue, especially for their characters’ most vulnerable moments. While plenty of ink has been spilled over who...

James Blake has released his own version of Frank Ocean’s “Godspeed,” accompanied by a stark music video of Blake performing the cover at his piano.
Fans of both artists will know that Blake has some familiarity with the track, as he produced, arranged and played piano on Ocean’s original version of “Godspeed” for his 2016 album Blonde. After initially covering the song in a snippet on Instagram Live, Blake decided to release a full version of “Godspeed” when the snippet went viral on TikTok.

James Blake added Nirvana to his quarantine cover roster with a rendition of “Come As You Are,” performed on a benefit livestream this past Sunday. The cover, requested by a fan, got the full James Blake treatment, which is pretty simple: a piano setup and a lovely crooning voice.
Blake has done quite a few covers over livestream during the Covid-19 pandemic, including Radiohead’s “No Surprises,” Billie Eilish’s “When the Party’s Over,” Frank Ocean’s “Godspeed,” Ray Charles’ “Georgia on My Mind,” Roberta Flack’s “The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face,...

James Blake played a solo rendition of Radiohead’s “No Surprises” on Monday, tackling the Ok Computer anthem during a livestreamed Instagram performance.
The singer-songwriter — a noted Radiohead fan who previously covered In Rainbows‘ “Videotape” onstage — magnified the song’s melancholy core with his stripped-down take. Over rich piano chords, the singer-songwriter ascended to a fluttering falsetto as he sang about “a heart that’s full up like a landfill, a job that slowly kills you.”
Fans were clearly onboard with his version, replying on Instagram with a flurry of crying face and heart emojis.

Brandi Carlile is nothing if not a wizard with her setlist. In her intimate Los Angeles show Thursday evening at the Palladium — the third of four concerts as part of the Citi Sound Vault Grammy Week series — Carlile weaved in and out of country stomps and ballads, hyping up concertgoers and tugging on heartstrings as if she was curating a playlist for a romantic partner.
The alt-country singer-songwriter, no stranger to playing smaller venues between festival and arena performances, opened with the on-your-feet singalong “Hold Out Your Hand,” which has...

A little over two years ago, Brandi Carlile played a small show at Nashville’s Basement East for the holiday party thrown by her new producer and label, Dave Cobb and Low Country Sound. It was there that she debuted songs from her album By the Way, I Forgive You, which would be released in a few months and catapult her to international superstar. Since then, she’s won three Grammy Awards, formed the Highwomen, performed a tribute to Joni Mitchell, produced records for Tanya Tucker and the Secret Sisters,...

Six months after the release of Blue, her 1971 masterpiece, Joni Mitchell pondered on what to gift her friends with for Christmas. “All my friends were kind of nouveau riche, so buying Christmas presents was going to be really difficult,” Mitchell said. “I had put the drawings into a ring binder accompanied by handwritten lyrics.”
Nearly 50 years later, Mitchell’s intimate gift was widely released for the first time last month. Titled Morning Glory on the Vine — a line from Neil Young’s “Motion Pictures (For Carrie)” — the collection features more than 30 original watercolor paintings,...

“It is impossible for me to describe what this feels like right now,” Brandi Carlile said, addressing the crowd for the first time, three songs into her sold-out show at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night. Then the singer, performing what might have been the largest, or at least the most high-profile, headlining set of her 20-some-odd-year career, broke down in tears before dedicating her next song — “The Story” — to the crowd. “There is not a nerdy little outcast with a guitar in the world that doesn’t dream of...

Painter, poet and musician Joni Mitchell turns 75 years old today. Her artistry has encompassed pop, rock, folk and jazz, earning varying degrees of praise and criticism, especially for her more experimental, jazz-centric works, but she remains, unquestionably, one of the most influential songwriters of the past 50 years.
Born Roberta Joan Anderson in Fort MacLeod, Alberta, Canada, and raised in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, she began performing in public, accompanying herself on ukulele, in 1963. In August of that year, she appeared on Ckbi-tv in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, as a one-time replacement for a...

Given the jazz-inflected complexities and somber, introspective tone of Joni Mitchell’s most vibrant work, the skill and magnetism of the artists who took the stage on the first of two nights celebrating her 75th birthday at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion at L.A.’s the Music Center felt all the more impressive. Over the course of a breathless two-and-a-half hours, a carousel of musicians — some of her decades-old familiars like Graham Nash and James Taylor, others fresher talents like Brandi Carlile and Norah Jones — took turns paying tribute to...

In 1983, Prince was a budding genius on a historic run that would eventually redefine pop. A year earlier he’d exploded into the Top 10 with his synth-funk double-lp opus, 1999, and he was already hard at work on Purple Rain, the album/film project that would render a version of his life story in Beatles-size proportions.
One day, in the midst of all this, he sat down in his Chanhassen, Minnesota, home studio and knocked out a demo, just him at the piano. Most of what he recorded were works-in-progress,...

“I was always hoping that these recordings were still around because of the feeling that’s in them,” Don Batts, Prince’s personal recording engineer in the early Eighties, tells Rolling Stone. He’s reflecting on a demo cassette he made with the artist released Friday as Piano & a Microphone 1983, 34 minutes of Prince sketching out song ideas by himself. “It’s just him pounding this idea out so he could come back later and fill in the blanks. These were his little grooves.”

A new video for Prince‘s passionate cover of the spiritual “Mary Don’t You Weep” focuses on the impact of gun violence on American youth, augmented by the artist’s own words. After showing gun injury and fatality statistics among children, the video displays a quote from the Purple One taken from another video he’d made for his song “Baltimore,” written in the wake of the 2015 death of Freddie Gray: “The system is broken. It’s going to take the young people to fix it this time. We need new ideas,...

Prince eases into a funky piano groove, asks for the lights to be turned down, lets loose a James Brown–styled “Good Gawd,” beat-boxes a little and then delivers a passionate rendition of “17 Days,” the B-side to “When Doves Cry,” on the latest recording to emerge from his upcoming Piano & a Microphone 1983 archival release. It’s a naturally sparser arrangement than the one he recorded with the Revolution — he sings the synthesizer part in falsetto — as the musician yowls lyrics about a breakup between jazzy piano fills.

Brandi Carlile is well used to both covering and being covered. Last year, she was the recipient of a tribute album that had Adele, Dolly Parton and Pearl Jam, among others, doing her songs. She can give as well as she gets, and on her current tour, she’s dropped in everything from “Madman Across the Water” to “Stand By Your Man.”
Friday night at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, she did bravura vocal turns on two of the songs that have turned into tour staples for her in recent weeks, Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You” and Led Zeppelin’s “Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You.” But, given the week’s sad news events, she was saving the most literally respectful for last.
For the encore, Carlile invited My Morning Jacket main man Jim James up to duet on two Aretha Franklin standards, “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man” followed by “Respect.
