Exclusive: This Sunday’s BAFTA TV Awards will “celebrate and remember the power of storytelling” at a “challenging” time for the industry, according to the new chair of the 77-year-old body.
Speaking exclusively to Deadline in the days leading up to the London ceremony, Sara Putt, who replaced Krishnendu Majumdar last year, said the awards will partly act as a tonic against the bad times, allowing “a community to come together, network, and be creative and supportive of each other.”
She acknowledged that 2023 was a “challenging year for many in the industry, whether freelancers or small indies,” coming a few months after BAFTA research found one third are considering leaving.
“We [at BAFTA] have many roles to play and it is important when times are hard to celebrate and remember the power of storytelling,” Putt said.

“It was a song that called out for as much writing and as many words as possible,” reveals Marc Shaiman of the epic tongue twister tune “Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?” This patter song at the heart of “Only Murders in the Building” Season 3 proved so complex that the initial songwriting team of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul felt compelled to recruit another writing duo, Shaiman and Scott Wittman, to help with the intricate rhymes. “It really was one of those more-is-more kind of songs,” admits Paul, “and so we all had a blast.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
According to Pasek, the incredible “ambition” of this season spurred him and Paul to reach out to another writing team. “It felt like to us, what an amazing opportunity to get to work with people that we love and bring in a couple of other voices to help shape a score,...

Actors’ Equity Association has voted to authorize a strike against the Broadway League amid negotiations over developmental work.
The strike authorization vote, which was agreed to unanimously by the union’s 83-member national council, does not mean the union will go on strike, but rather that Equity can call a strike if deemed necessary. The union went on a 33-day strike in 2019 over this contract, which pertains to workshops and readings of shows held before potential full productions on Broadway or elsewhere.
At the end of the 2019 strike, which saw stage managers and actors refuse to take part in developmental work, union members who take part in the development of a production gained a share in 1 percent of the show’s profits, once the show goes on to a full production and recoups, as well as a salary increase.

If you're Dominican, chances are you're familiar with morir soñando, a simple but refreshingly crisp batida (milkshake) made with milk, orange juice, and vanilla extract. As simple as the three-ingredient drink seems, there's a reason it's given such a poetic name. "Morir soñando" translates as "to die dreaming," and after just one sip, one instantly feels like they've been transported into a dream - even if just for a matter of seconds. That was exactly the feeling Dominican American comedians and real-life besties Sasha Merci and Glorelys Mora, who both grew up in uptown (Merci specfically in the Bronx), wanted audiences to feel when they created their first all-Dominican comedy show back in 2019. On Monday, Nov. 6, the Morir Soñando show took over the historic United Palace, formerly Loew's 175th Street Theatre, in Washington Heights. It was the first show in the New York Comedy Festival to include an all-Dominican lineup,...

“Smash,” the TV series about the making of a fictional Broadway musical, takes an early step toward becoming a real-life Broadway musical on Sept. 22, with a pair of industry readings led by Tony nominees Robyn Hurder and Kerry Butler.
Hurder plays Ivy, an actress cast in the lead role of a new musical about Marilyn Monroe, and Butler appears as Karen, Ivy’s understudy. Their characters share the names of two pivotal roles in the TV show, which also focused on the development of a Marilyn Monroe musical called “Bombshell.”
While it retains the series’ most recognizable elements, the musical adaptation of “Smash” departs in other ways with a storyline and cast of characters that are inspired by the series but not direct translations. “It’s definitely a new script,” said director Susan Stroman of the musical’s book by Bob Martin (“The Prom”) and Rick Elice (“Jersey Boys”). “It...

Elvis Presley‘s “Suspicious Minds” was a cover of an obscure song. The record label behind the original version of “Suspicious Minds” was certain the tune would become a hit. A legendary country music producer felt the same way. However, the track only became big once the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll recorded it.
Elvis Presley’s ‘Suspicious Minds’ was 1st sung by the writer of ‘Always on My Mind’
Elvis tunes such as “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Blue Christmas, and “Blue Hawaii” were all covers. “Suspicious Minds” was no different. The track was originally recorded by its writer, Mark James, who also penned the Elvis classic “Always on My Mind.”
During a 2017 interview with Elvis Australia, James discussed his version of “Suspicious Minds.” “I recorded for Scepter Records,” he recalled. “Worked with [producer] Chips [Moman]. They loved it, up at Scepter Records. They said, ‘Smash!’

We have unfortunate but expected news about OWN's thrilling courtroom drama All Rise.
The series has been canceled after three seasons.
Truthfully, the writing had been on the wall for some time.
All Rise Season 3 Episode 10 aired a year ago, and the series has been on hiatus ever since -- never a good sign for any series.
In March, Deadline reported that the entire cast had been released, meaning that new deals would have to be reached if negotiations got underway for a fourth season.
As a result, the series has faced an uphill battle since its move to the cable network after CBS swung the axe following All Rise Season 2.
The only silver lining here is that we still have ten episodes of All Rise left to air.
They will begin airing on Saturday, September 16, at 9 p.m. Et/Pt.

Sherri Shepherd paid tribute over the weekend to her former View boss Bill Geddie, who died July 20 of coronary-related factors. He was 68.
Shepherd, who served as a View co-host from 2007 to 2014 before launching her own eponymous talk show last fall, said on Instagram Saturday that Geddie’s passing left her “completely devastated,” adding, “Bill took a chance and cast me — a standup comic with no talk show experience. His instinct told him that people would relate to a Black female, single mom with a Special Needs child who had not one inch of political knowledge but was just a real person.

China’s box office weekend was marked more by the tussle for top spot between “Never Say Never” and “Chang An” than the entry of “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.” The Tom Cruise-starring U.S. blockbuster was the highest new release title, but landed in third place with an opening score of $25.9 million.
The weekend’s top-ranked film was “Never Say Never,” a holdover title that scored $46.1 million. Lightchaser Animation-produced “Chang An San Wan Li” earned a shade less, at $43.9 million, according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway.
After 11 days of official release (plus substantial previews), “Never Say Never,” written and directed by actor Wang Baoqiang has already become one of the biggest hits of the year. Its cumulative stands at $212 million. “Chang An” has accumulated $96.1 million in nine days.

Smash hit Japanese animation feature “The First Slam Dunk” is set to be the first film theatrically released by newly-launched Australian distribution and New Zealand licensing firm Sugoi Co.
The company is headed by Tim Anderson, founder and former CEO of Madman Entertainment, the Australian indie with a strong leaning for Japanese content, and Sylvester “Sly” Ip.
The pair made an announcement on Twitter and conducted a soft launch at the recent Anime Expo in Los Angeles.
“The First Slam Dunk. Coming soon to cinemas across Australia. Follow us for full release and ticket info,” said Sugoi Co on Twitter.
Anderson told Anime News Network that Sugoi will focus on marketing and promotion for the Australian and New Zealand market. It will be a portfolio business and platform agnostic, releasing anime properties through the appropriate channel, rather than being wedded to theatrical or any specific platform for release.

Every generation gets the aspirational workplace it deserves. In 2006, “The Devil Wears Prada” helped establish the archetype of an imperious, intimidating woman who rules her chic urban office with an iron fist; with its obvious Anna Wintour analog, the book-turned-film also doubled as a bookend to the era of the print magazine editor’s omnipotence. Eight years later, Sophia Amoruso coined the term “Girlboss,” a cutesy moniker that soon got a Netflix adaptation to match. Latter-day examples have updated the template to keep pace with the times: “Younger” took place in the wake of the Great Recession, when securing a dream job requires some deceit, while “The Bold Type” was proudly progressive — think 2010s Cosmo, not mid-aughts Vogue. In these stories, actual employment is less secure, but the employer acts less like a dictator than a stern, if nurturing, mentor.

We’ve all made the “Cop Rock” jokes. The Steven Bochco musical drama, which premiered in fall 1990, was a big swing: marrying original music with procedural storytelling. It was a colossal flop that we still talk about three decades later, and a reminder that musicals are hard.
Music has been a part of the TV landscape going back to the 1950s and shows like “Your Hit Parade.” But few series have successfully integrated regular music performances into their storytelling: “The Monkees” and “The Partridge Family” worked in the 1960s and ’70s. “Fame” did it in the early ’80s. And then “Cop Rock” scared people off the concept.
The 1990s animation boom incorporated music in shows like “The Simpsons” and “Animaniacs.” But not until the 21st century did scripted series really figure out how to make musical numbers work as part of the narrative. “Flight of the Conchords” did it with satiric tracks,...

The NBC musical drama Smash didn’t exactly live up to its title during its television run, dropping to 113rd place amongst network TV shows during its second and final season. But everyone loves a comeback story, so it should be no surprise that a stage production of Smash is on its way to Broadway. Of course, theatergoers have already seen Smash songs on the Great White Way: The cast of the TV show reunited for a one-night-only benefit concert in 2015, performing numbers from Bombshell, the fictional Marilyn Monroe musical that the characters of Smash brought to Broadway. But the new Smash musical, set to debut in the 2024-2025 season, will be an adaptation of the Steven Spielberg-produced TV show itself, with Tony winner Susan Stroman directing and Smash’s Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman once again handling the music, Playbill reports. While we wait for curtain time — and...

Is there going be a musical episode of “Only Murders in the Building” in Season 3?!
While it hasn’t been officially confirmed that Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez will be singing and dancing at some point, I recently got a tease from musical impresarios Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. “We’ve worked on the next season of ‘Only Murders in the Building,’” Shaiman said. “We’re not allowed to say anything more than that, but you could probably do that math.”
The third season also includes appearances by Meryl Streep, Paul Rudd and Jesse Williams.

Now available on VOD and Digital HD on all major platforms from The Horror Collective, our latest Q&a is with Summoning Sylvia co-star Troy Iwata who tells us all about the new LGBTQ horror comedy:
What drew you to Summoning Sylvia and the character of Reggie?
Troy Iwata: I actually auditioned for Kevin originally, sent in an audition tape for that and then just got an offer for Reggie so I was like…ok. Any opportunity that offers a refreshing glimpse into queer representation I’m all for. First off I was obsessed with how funny the script was and the blending of genres was enticing as well.
The company’s Parks division also released concept art for the show, which was was first referenced in the first episode of the Disney+ series Hawkeye last November. Details in the new image (below) look much the same as those in a still from Hawkeye (above), except it has fewer of Cap’s fellow Avengers and more star-spangled cheerleaders. Fan-favorite Peggy Carter, Dr. Abraham Erskine and his Vita-Ray Chamber also appear to be in the mix.

Even in the streaming wars era, with programmers gambling on new concepts in order to gain and retain subscribers, schedules aren’t brimming with musicals. That’s because TV musicals are hard. And as a general rule, they rarely stick — even when well executed.
Sure, for every “Galavant” and “Eli Stone” there’s a “Glee,” a “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist,” or a “Smash,” which was a delightful disaster for two seasons. But even “Glee” had its own set of pacing and storyline problems after the surprising first season. “Smash” failed to catch fire in the ratings despite its cult following, and “Zoey” barely held on during its two-season (and a movie) run. As for Apple TV+’s “Schmigadoon!,” the proof will be in the (corn) pudding as to whether it can sustain its momentum when Season 2 debuts this month.
Part of the problem is that TV musicals are divisive. You...

Just a couple of weeks after sharing their new album 10,000 gecs, 100 gecs took over Los Angeles’ Boiler Room the other night for a DJ set that incuded — among an array of bangers — a very gec-ified version of “Toxicity” by System of a Down.
It’s not too difficult to trace Laura Les and Dylan Brady’s abrasive, industrial hyperpop back to System of a Down’s adrenaline-fueled nu-metal. The duo toned down the original track’s guitars in favor of chopped-up instrumentals, a few beat drops, and bass boosted loud enough to cause some minor tectonic shifts.
The hour-and-a-half-long set also included House of Pain’s “Jump Around,” Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Heads Will Roll,” Harry Belafonte’s “Jump in the Line” back-to-back with Smash Mouth’s “Walkin’ on the Sun,” Skrillex’s “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” mashed up with Vince Staples’ “Yeah Right,” and many other great choices. See 100 gecs’ remix of “Toxicity” below,...
