Exclusive: Heroes alum Greg Grunberg has signed a talent holding deal with Warner Bros Television to star in a drama or comedy project for the studio targeted for next season. The impetus for the deal was the fact that Warner Bros is the TV studio home of Grunberg’s childhood friend and frequent collaborator, writer-producer J.J. Abrams. The intention is for Grunberg to join a series project from Abrams. Grunberg previously co-starred on Abrams’ series Felicity and Alias as well as on Abrams’ pilot for ABC The Catch. Grunberg also did cameos in the pilot for Abrams’ ABC series Lost and the Abrams-directed features Mission: Impossible III and Star Trek, where he provided the voice of Kirk’s stepfather. So far this season, Abrams’ Wbtv-based Bad Robot has landed a pilot production commitment from NBC for epic adventure thriller Revolution penned by Supernatural creator Eric Kripke. A potential gig on...

After a lengthy screening and decision-making process for their two pilots Longmire and Big Mike, A&E brass just passed on one of them, Big Mike. No official decision has been made on Longmire yet, but buzz on the project starring Matrix standout Robert Taylor has been strong, and I hear that A&E is leaning heavily toward picking it up to series. Based on the Walt Longmire Mystery series of novels by Craig Johnson, Longmire is named after its central character, Walt Longmire (Taylor), the charismatic, dedicated and unflappable sheriff of Absaroka County, Wyo. Widowed only a year, he is a man in psychic repair but buries his pain behind his brave face, unassuming grin and dry wit. Co-starring in the Warner Horizon-produced pilot, which was directed by Chris Chulack, are Katee Sackhoff, Lou Diamond Phillips, Bailey Chase and Cassidy Freeman. Hunt Baldwin and John Coveny wrote the...

When NBC announced that it had picked up the one-hour comedy, "Love Bites," for the fall 2010 schedule, anticipation was high among the media and viewers.
It boasted a stellar cast including "Ugly Betty's" Becki Newton and "My Boys" actress Jordana Spiro, a unique premise in its anthology-style format, and the creative promise of Emmy-winning "Sex and the City" executive producer Cindy Chupack. Yet, the series has hit a few bumps in the road to our TV screens. Since then it was pushed to mid-season and then finally to the summer schedule premiering Thursday, June 2 at 10 p.m. Et on NBC.
Since its original pick up announcement, the series lost Spiro, who was still on contract with TBS, and Chupack suddenly demoted herself from Ep to writer citing personal issues and the show's workload among her reasons. And news of Newton's pregnancy and casting in another pilot seemed to indicate...

"Love Bites" is not totally dead after all. The romantic comedy series was proposed to debut in September 2010 but plan was scrapped when there were production changes and star Becki Newton fell pregnant with her first child. NBC is now ready to air it as a summer program.
The first episode will air Thursday, June 2 at 10 P.M. for a nine-week summer run. Even though the series may garner decent ratings, it is most likely not returning for a second season. Newton's co-star Jordana Spiro had to pull out because of contractual issues with her TBS comedy "My Boys", which is actually canceled now, and showrunner Cindy Chupack has stepped down.
But the major problem is Newton's commitment to CBS' untitled Jeff and Jackie Filgos project which is poised for a fall premiere. Moreover, cast member Greg Grunberg is headlining A&E pilot "Big Mike" and Spiro has found a...

Eight months after its original premiere date, NBC's hourlong anthology comedy Love Bites will debut in its original Thursday 10 Pm time slot. Love Bites' premiere is set for June 2. Once a high-flying prospect, Love Bites was prominently featured at NBC's updront presentation last May when it was assigned the Thursday 10 Pm slot for fall. But in the summer, the series was pushed to midseason after a series of setbacks, including the pregnancy of star Becki Newton, the decision by creator/executive producer Cindy Chupack to step down from day-to-day showrunner duties and the exit of the other original star, Jordana Spiro, because of her commitment to TBS' My Boys. The order for the show was subsequently cut from 13 to 9. With The Paul Reiser Show recently launching for what became a two-week run and Love Bites getting slated, comedy Friends With Benefits now remains the only freshman NBC comedy that has not been scheduled yet.

Exclusive: Ed Decter and John Strauss, creators/executive producers of Sony Pictures TV's hourlong pilot for A&E Big Mike, have signed a two-year overall deal with Sony. Outside of the deal, which starts in June, the co-writers of There's Something About Mary serve as executive producers on In Plain Sight. They joined the USA Network/Universal Cable Prods. drama series at the start of Season 4, which begins airing May 1, and are set to continue at the helm of the show for one more season. (Ips was given a two-year pickup after Season 3.) Decter and Strauss' services on the USA series will not interfere with their duties under the Sony deal, including on Big Mike, whose pilot is currently filming in Florida. The project, co-produced by Happy Madison, stars Greg Grunberg as the title character, a plus-sized detective and a force of nature in the San Diego Pd. Wme-repped Decter...

Further proof that NBC’s troubled anthology series Love Bites is Doa: Leading lady Becki Newton has found other work.
The Ugly Betty Mvp has signed on to star in a CBS comedy pilot that revolves around a blue-collar man who lives under the same roof with his wife, their grown daughter (Newton) and her 12-year-old son, and his recently widowed mother.
The script is by Jeff and Jackie Filgo (That ’70s Show), while sitcom vet Andy Ackerman (Seinfeld) is on board to direct.

All the pilot casting that's fit to print:
Kiefer Sutherland has officially said "yes" to starring in Fox's drama pilot "Touch," from "Heroes" creator Tim Kring. Word that the "24" star was in talks for the project got out last week, but there was some question about when "Touch" would shoot since Sutherland is currently on Broadway in a revival of "That Championship Season." That's been cleared up: The pilot will likely shoot in early June, which means "Touch" would probably be in the mix for a midseason spot in 2011-12. [Hollywood Reporter]
Former Joss Whedon regular Alan Tudyk ("Firefly," "Dollhouse") has been banished to "Suburgatory." Tudyk will co-star in the ABC comedy pilot about a teenager (Jane Levy) who has to move from Manhattan to the 'burbs with her dad. Tudyk will play an old friend of the father and a long-time suburbanite. [Deadline]

Nicole Ari Parker has joined the cast of A&E’s furlong pilot Big Mike, which Paris Barclay has come on board to direct. The pilot stars Greg Grunberg as an underestimated “plus-size” detective with the San Diego Police Department. Although he’s the best at his job, his biggest challenge is the dating field.
Nicole Ari Parker will play lieutenant Grace Peterson, his boss.
Meanwhile, I coincidentally posted a profile of director Paris Barclay, on this blog, last month. We really hadn’t given much ink to him, as I noted, so a profile was long overdue.
Barclay is an industry veteran, who’s been working constantly, directing mostly TV series, since the late 80s, like NYPD Blue, ER, The West Wing, CSI, Lost, The Shield, Law & Order, In Treatment and more recently Glee, Sons of Anarchy, NCIS: Los Angeles, The Good Wife, and more. He also often served...

Casting (and potential casting) dominates the latest round of pilot-season news.
Maria Bello is seemingly always on the "actors in demand" list during pilot season, and this year is no different -- or maybe it is. Bello ("A History of Violence," "The Company Men") says NBC has approached her about starring in its "Prime Suspect" remake. "There may be interest in me doing it, but I haven't read anything yet or talked to anyone in-depth about it," she says. "I'm possibly interested. Definitely nervous to even think about taking over for Helen Mirren. C'mon! How could anyone compete with her?" [EW]
Debra Messing is headed back to NBC to star in the drama pilot "Smash," about the cast and crew of a Broadway musical. The "Will & Grace" Emmy winner will play the show's lyricist. The pilot is based on an idea by Steven Spielberg, who's executive producing; Theresa Rebeck ("Law & Order: Criminal Intent") is writing it.
