Gracian Parish (Giancarlo Esposito) is out for justice for his late teen son Maddox (Caleb Baumann) in the explosive May 5 finale of AMC‘s fast-moving thriller, Parish. “He goes after the person he really holds responsible,” says Eduardo Javier Canto, who executive produces alongside Ryan Maldonado. “And there’s a cost to that.” Will that cost lead to Parish’s moral bankruptcy? That’s always been the question for this former getaway driver turned legit businessman who was pulled back into a life of crime by his old friend and ex-con Colin (Skeet Ulrich) for a “one time” gig. Instead, Parish became a driver for a Zimbabwean crime lord, The Horse (Zackary Momoh), and was soon entangled with the man’s infighting family, the Tongais, who are human traffickers. Complicating that, corrupt tycoon Anton (Bradley Whitford), someone from Parish’s criminal past, arrived and demanded he betray The Horse. Alyssa Moran...

AMC Networks’ plans to submit the zombie spinoff “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” as a limited series for the Emmys have been killed.
The cable network had announced plans to submit the six-episode spinoff, created by Scott M. Gimple, Danai Gurira, and Andrew Lincoln, for outstanding limited or anthology series at the Primetime Emmys. However, Variety has learned exclusively from two sources with direct knowledge that the show is ineligible to submit in the category.
In 2021, the Television Academy defined what constitutes a limited or anthology series, stating that the story must be resolved within its season without any ongoing storylines. This criteria affected past winners, such as the second season of “The White Lotus,” which was required to compete as a drama due to Jennifer Coolidge’s recurring character. According to the Academy’s ruling at the time, “the reappearance in a subsequent ‘season’ of one character...

Preparing to make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Drama Actor? Be sure to take a look through our photo gallery highlighting the likeliest potential nominees. In the absence of reigning champ Kieran Culkin (“Succession”), whose show ended last May, possible category newcomer Gary Oldman (“Slow Horses”) has emerged as the clear frontrunner.
None of the six actors who competed for this prize last year – including “Succession” stars Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong – are involved in the current race. Rounding out that group were Bob Odenkirk of the long-concluded “Better Call Saul” and ongoing series leads Jeff Bridges (“The Old Man”) and Pedro Pascal (“The Last of Us”). Naturally, this opens the door for dozens of potential first-time contenders.
The only 2024 hopeful who has previously been recognized in this category is Timothy Olyphant, who received a 2011 bid for the role he currently plays on “Justified: City Primeval,” a continuation of “Justified.

We have recently revealed that fans on Ranker have voted Gustavo Fring from Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul as the best TV villain of all time, which is something we have agreed with. Played by Giancarlo Esposito, Gustavo Fring turned out to be a formidable villain and a character with amazing development, which is why he remains one of the most popular characters from the whole franchise despite being the series’ major villain.
But, as it turns out, actor Giancarlo Esposito had been in a very bad place just before he was cast in Breaking Bad, and as it turns out – the series literally saved his life, which is an interesting revelation in light of the fact that Esposito is today one of the most popular TV actors overall.

Giancarlo Esposito looked back at his financial struggles this week, recalling a time when he considered ordering his own murder in pursuit of a life insurance payout for his family.
During an appearance on SiriusXM’s Jim & Sam show, Esposito said he went through two bankruptcies before landing Breaking Bad, as well as a foreclosure on his home. At his lowest, he told the hosts, he considered suicide.
“The first thing that had me think there was a way out, was my wife’s father — God rest his soul — Pops McManigal was in insurance,” Esposito said. “So I asked [my ex-wife], I started poking around, ‘How much am I insured for?’ And then she told me. My way out in my brain was, I said, ‘Hey, do you get life insurance, if someone commits suicide, do they get the bread?’ And my wife said, ‘Well, that’s kind of tricky.’”

Giancarlo Esposito appeared on a recent episode of SiriusXM’s “Jim & Sam” show while promoting his new AMC drama series “Parish” and revealed that he was so broke prior to landing his iconic role of Gus Fring on “Breaking Bad” that he once considered arranging his own murder so that his children could have some financial protection courtesy of his life insurance money. The actor considered this around 2008, a year before “Breaking Bad” inextricably changed his career and opened the door for roles in “The Mandalorian,” “The Boys” and more.
Asked how he got out of near bankruptcy around 2008, Esposito said, “My way out in my brain was: ‘Hey, do you get life insurance if someone commits suicide? Do they get the bread?’ My wife had no idea why I was asking this stuff. I started scheming. If I got somebody to knock me off, death by misadventure, [my kids] would get the insurance.

“Gray, it’s been a long time.” That casual greeting – delivered with a menacing edge by Bradley Whitford in his first appearance as a new character, Anton, a powerful Louisiana businessman with strong criminal ties – gave us chills when it capped off the taut third episode of AMC’s six-part crime-thriller Parish. “Anton is probably the most dangerous of all the characters because he knows Gray [Giancarlo Esposito] better than anybody. Ask yourself, who are the people that can get under your skin the most? It’s the people who know you the best,” says Eduardo Javier Canto who executive produces and writes the series with Ryan Maldonado. TV Insider checked in with the duo to see how the charming and wily Anton will add to stoic Gray’s pile-up of miseries. The family man is grieving his son’s death and fighting the failure of his luxury car service business.

It’s always that one last job where things tend to go haywire.
In the premiere of AMC’s new crime drama Parish, Giancarlo Esposito stars as Gracián “Gray” Parish, a family man down on his luck following the murder of his son Maddox. He’s also a driver with a shady criminal past, much of which his family, wife Ros and daughter Michaela, know nothing about. Despite major financial troubles and a flailing business that may lead to the loss of their New Orleans home, it only takes minutes for us to realize that Gray’s struggles are far more than just monetary.

From “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul” to “The Usual Suspects” and “Do the Right Thing,” Giancarlo Esposito has long been involved in some of the biggest, buzziest projects across TV, film and even video games. That’s why it’s surprising to see him finally lead his own prestige TV project now with “Parish.” Not only does Esposito star as the titular character of the AMC crime thriller, but the series also marks the actor’s first time as an executive producer.
“It’s an honor to be a No. 1. It really is,” Esposito told TheWrap of his leading role. “People have put their faith in you, and they’ve trusted you. It becomes less about trying to do something but trying to really live and be as you are … This is what I’ve been wanting for many, many years is just to do great work. I have that attitude every time,...

At this point, it feels like the lesson of not pushing a character played by Giancarlo Esposito too far should have been learned. Peak TV may have peaked, but there’s still enough overwhelming volume on the small screen that I was able to watch AMC’s Parish while pondering a very niche-y question: Was this the best American cable adaptation of a far more efficient British drama about a guilt-stricken father, played by a star of Breaking Bad, leaving a life of comfortable legitimacy to wallow in a New Orleans criminal underbelly overseen by a member of the cast of Steven Spielberg’s The Post?
For what it’s worth, I think I preferred Showtime’s Your Honor, but I don’t want to make it sound like this new six-part thriller is derivative of only one specific show when it’s actually derivative of an entire fourth or fifth wave of already derivative prestige dramas — in AMC terms, more Low Winter Sun than The Killing, much less Breaking Bad.

Giancarlo Esposito has had many iconic roles — Buggin’ Out, Mike Giardello, El Presidente — but only one is associated with AMC: Breaking Bad drug kingpin Gus Fring. It’s tempting to bring up that show when talking about Parish, a new crime drama on the same network, but that would set expectations unfairly high. Adapted from the U.K. series The Driver by co-creator Danny Brocklehurst and Sunu Gonera (who directed at least one episode and co-wrote others before he was ousted following an internal investigation of “serious allegations”), the story has moved to AMC’s recent stomping grounds of New Orleans and extended itself from three episodes to six.

The downside to playing a character like Gus Fring, Breaking Bad’s soft-spoken purveyor of fried chicken and crystal meth, is that once audiences have gotten a taste of it, that’s all they want from you. Even when he’s wielding a Darksaber or managing a stable of celebrity superheroes, many of Giancarlo Esposito’s subsequent roles have asked him to stick pretty closely to Fring’s politely psychotic shtick. As such, his grittier, growlier turn as retired wheelman Gracián “Gray” Parish in AMC’s crime drama Parish makes for a nice change of pace.
Gray seems like your average family man. He runs a car company and lives in a nice suburban home with his wife, Ros (Paula Malcomson), and their daughter, Makayla (Arica Himmel). They enjoy a peaceful life for the most part, though a shadow lingers over their home: Gray’s son, Maddox (Caleb Baumann), was...
