Top 5 K-dramas of 2022
pauedi199821 May 2022
What I like the most about Tomorrow is that they found a very up-front way of showing some of the social and cultural issues of South Korea. For example, it's the first time I've seen a K-drama talking about the Comfort women and all the suffering they went through the Second World War in the hands of the Japanese military.

If you are not into cheesy romantic or horror K-dramas but want to get an insight of SK, you should watch this.

HEART WARMING
Let's preface this by saying that most of the BTS stans are literally insane as always. They say ORBITs have an issue but these people are on a different level. Exactly how are you going to call people insensitive then tell them to go to hell. Don't use "/TW" if you're gonna be a hypocrite about it.

SPOILER FREE Actual show review: despite the small blip that BTS fans boldly assumed was about their fav, the rest of the show is just a collection of gut wrenching stories that'll hit home for those who've experienced first hand all the trauma life has to offer. Those empathetic enough will also resonate with these stories about very real and raw human experiences. The main characters can be a bit too one note at times but that makes it so that all side characters, appearing for their own stories, get their own time to shine. Overall, if you loved Violet Evergarden, this could be the next step up into a more real and heartbreaking setting.

HIGH MARKS

16 episodes was just enough. A feel-good series, but also had a lot more social issues it ran with than most series. Some points were slow but overall it was 100% wonderfully made.

GREAT DRAMA, NOT FOR EVERYONE
aleloaizaporcel20 May 2022
This drama is very particular since it deals with death and sensitive issues like suicide. Chapter 6 is so moving and touching, i loved a lot. First two episodes were kind of shoking beacuse there is a lot of suffering and disturbing events. But that is life though. I didn't like the atittude of the female lead at the beginning and with the first case because is insensitive, but then you understand why she has a struggle with the subject and her attitude, so she represents a position, the male leading represents another approach and so on with other characters. Also, she changes after. So, I think that the stories are good to reflect on, but it is hard to watch and definetly not for someone who is dealing with depression and suicidal thoughs.

One of the best kdramas
Themhysa19 May 2022
Hands down one of the best kdramas. Each episode has its life changing messages, and each episode touches my heart. I especially love episodes 6 (war veteran), episode 9 (dog-human bond) and episode 13 (comfort lady). I bawled my eyes out and yet the epilogues are just heartwarming. Beautifully tackled to highlight many societal woes we are facing. Some of them bullying and cyber bullying/gossips. Well what we are facing today with a bunch of inmature people rating it as 1 star (without even watching the drama) proves they still exist in our society.. And i fear for the world's humanity and morals. Has education and humanity failed us to make them come this far?

AMAZING DRAMA !!
lennamartz17 May 2022
It's been one of the few dramas that I'll give 10/10. Loved the different story lines, and how managed to convey the emotions to the viewers.

Every episode I watched makes me feel grateful.

Really good
eclaridge22 May 2022
I'm so glad I read there will be a season two. This drama was funny at times but emotionally hard hitting as it dealt with suicide and problems people face in modern day korea. To be honest I have developed some negative perceptions of modern day Korea from watching kdramas in general ... I understand they over empathize certain problems to create tension but if Korean society is even half of what they depict its pretty messed up.

Thos was a great series well acted and I highly recommend it.

My First KDrama
gladys-0358419 May 2022
I was intrigued that this is inspired by a Webtoons series. I adore this show. It tugs at ALL of my heartstrings in nearly every episode. It's really compelling storytelling with good pacing and enough levity to not leave me under a blue cloud at the end. Having to be patient for new episodes gives me that old school anticipation that I remember from the network TV days. 100% hooked and so ready for more.

Teaches Some Life's Lessons
PalmBeachG17 April 2022
The main theme of the series is that the the special missions that the special team is in charge of is preventing someone from committing suicide. The lead male Choi Joon-woong who is played by the popular Roowon definitely adds the youth, innocence, good naturedness, good heart, cuteness to the show which is definitely needed for such a grim subject. The theme isn't particularly something that the general public is comfortable with in watching for entertainment so it may not be for everyone. There are a lot of moral stories and getting judged for crimes and sins but no mention of any religion beliefs to speak of that I have seen so far. Each episode is about a different case and the life situation that put them in their sadness and I would suggest to watch Episode 6, A Soul Becomes A Star, about a Korean War Vet. It was very touching and helps to understand what a Vet may go through and does resonate with real life situations.

So much heart
sandirab21 May 2022
How can a series about a team of grim reapers attempting to save people at their lowest point be so heartwarming and funny too at times? Great casting and interesting stories flawlessly acted. Some episodes, such as the story of the soldier or the dog will really stay with you. I may cry a little most episodes but I also laugh and leave each episode with a good feeling. That's quite a feat.

A show with good and bad parts too
Nicole24424 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I just finished watching episode 6, latest that is available on Netflix in my region.

Overall, the show is watchable. The members of the Special Crisis Management Team have different characters/personalities: We have the main lead - a young newbie who is supposed to be funny and does everything wrong. There were scenes where I found this character annoying. The plot so far goes in the direction that he will grow, gain work/life experience and become more humble (in certain aspects).

Then we have the team manager who is a badass lady and cold on surface. And the deputy who is a distant and misterious guy, and who keeps disappears when his watch alarm rings (never works overtime).

There's a back story for the latter two and I'd like to see them (how did they end up in this team - their deaths, who is the lead's lover from 1600s and if by doing this job she'll be able to meet him again, what's her connection/relationship with leader Park of the Humanitarian Crisis Team, and why does the deputy leave when his alarm rings etc.) There are points leading that there was some romance between the team leads - or at least that the principle guy Park JungGil is actually into Guryun.

If you're familiar with Korean movies and shows, the actors skills are good.

The issue I find is in the writing and how badly it tackles the psychological/mental issues. I was shocked at the dialogues between the reapers and the suicidal people. Psychology and therapy might not be well seen in Korean society (from my knowledge), but what the hell? Suicidal people are experiencing severe mental struggles and they don't need someone to diss their life choices. The writing is terrible in such scenes, with stupid and insensitive replies to the suicidal ones. Some other scenes were cringe too, but these can be found in mostly all dramas and I just skipped those.

The best episode so far is #6 with the war veteran. This one actually made me tear up - as we're now experiencing the war in Europe.

The dialogue was not that bad when approaching the old man, and it went well because they were direct when telling them about tomorrow being his last day. Not sure how it would've went if the writers would've chosen another path... But at least in this episode we got to see another face of the director and Park leader (character development; director was portrayed as a kind person from beginning, but Park lead was seen as strict, distant etc. Seems he's kind of a softy too :D)

There are still many wholes in the plot, and logic is absent in some of them - e.g. The reapers using their skills (yeah, I understood there's an editing team - but how can they edit all the moves from everyone? :D), or the afterlife and existence of the whole reapers HQ. Is it only in Korea, is it something that exists in all countries? An example from ep. 6 - they rewarded the war hero but what does that mean in similar cases for other countries: will they also award their own soldiers? Is afterlife a single place, or per countries? Who is good and who is bad? (each country sees their soldiers as good, who fought for the future of their own country). There are also mentions of hell and punishments, and suicide is described as something bad which will send you to hell and will also sever your connection to your soulmate or reincarnation etc. But there's no other religious approach or explanations... Maybe something more will come in the next episodes. I'll be disappointed if it doesn't.

I'll still watch, because overall I'm curious about the stories and I like the actors. But writers, please... for future productions, please realize the weight of words and if you approach themes such as suicide and death, do some more reading and studying on Psychology, regardless if you put a short disclaimer about suicide at the beginning of the show.

Applaud its willingness to look at painful societal problems
moonracer012013 October 2022
"Tomorrow" is a story about a group of grim reapers who try to prevent suicide. It doesn't shy away from looking at serious societal problems, like widespread poverty among the elderly and the currently inadequate punishments (just 2 years of jail) for rape and sexual assault--the kind of problems that lead to people take their own lives. However, I wish that the film production companies could have handled these issues with a little more sensitivity--especially the issue of rape because it has affected South Korea so deeply (from WWII "comfort women" to persistent patriarchal values that diminish the severity of women's suffering today). I gave it 9 stars for its willingness to look at painful social problems while still provide us with a simmering romance between the beautiful leads, Kim Hee-seon and Lee Soo-hyuk to enjoy.

Okay show so far
sharengon15 April 2022
I haven't finished the series yet but, it seems a bit insensitive to suicide victims. Like when the main female lead tells the bullying victim to basically stop being so weak and that is why she is bullied. And that makes the victim wake up and want to live. Suicide victims need help and support not your judgement. And with the father that wants to die, she is like other people struggle too why can't you deal with it? Like what the heck. Instead of helping him you just judge him and mock him.

Undeserved low viewership
mikkiparker21 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The best drama of 2022 so far. Each episode discusses a very sensitive topic - sexual abuse, bullying, eating disorders, PTSD et cetera. The viewer might be able to see themselves in one or more episodes. The cast did an excellent job portraying their characters and we did see some good character development. Through the cases the grim reapers solve, you will be able to get to know the reapers little by little.

In my personal opinion, as much as I love this drama, there were moments that did not make that much sense and moments I would like to address. The controversial suicidal dog episode (episode 9) wasn't as bad as other reviewers make it. It just showed that animals have feelings too. I do admit that the whole suicide act might be a little over the top but the message it conveys (as said before, that animals do have feelings too) was acceptable. However, I have to call out episode 7 which tackled the topic of anorexia/ED. The whole episode didn't really progress much and the ending wasn't satisfying. EDs are very serious mental illnesses and only a five-minute talk won't miraculously solve it.

Towards the end of the show, my satisfaction started declining as it felt that the main focus shifted to the relationship between Ryeon and Joong Gil. It took 2 episodes of a 16-episode drama to show the whole backstory of grim reaper Ryung Gu and that was it. Jun Woong was said to be the main focus of the show but his character development was non-existent. Rowoon's portrayal of Jun Woong was phenomenal yet the character didn't develop at all and stayed the same/similar from the first episode to the last. Meanwhile, Ryeon's character development from cold and distant to an absolutely heartbroken yet caring and kind woman was astounding.

Kim Hee Sun definitely stole the show with her portrayal of Ryeon. Lee Soo Hyuk's character Park Joong Gil was a scene-stealer. Hee Sun was a show-stealer.

Overall, the drama was excellent. The ending was rushed in terms of Ryeon's and Joong Gil's relationship. You could predict some aspects of it while watching the whole show but the ending was completely off. What I didn't like about it was Ryeon's behavior towards Joong Gil. She was in mental pain the whole show yet, in the end, she didn't even care about her husband staying in hell? The whole show kept on slowly improving yet the ending caused my overall rating to go down by one whole star.

Anyway, I still highly recommend it but be cautious about its sensitive topics.

Amazing drama with inspirational messages
carollinho-7397717 May 2022
This is one of the best dramas I have watched that deals with heavy real life situations. Amazing delivery and chemistry from the leads. There are life lessons and inspirational messages from each episode. You can laugh and cry with the characters. I especially love the character Choi Junwoong played by Rowoon, he's the most annoyingly adorable rookie grim reaper who wears his emotions on his sleeves but adds warmth and humour to the drama. A gem of a drama for the niche audience. 2 thumbs up for me.

Wonderful premise, incredible actors and cinematography
nomelle18 May 2022
This show blew me away.

I learned alot more about Korean history and culture and beliefs.

It is also very relatable.

I wasn't familiar with any of the cast before this but will definitely support their careers going forward.

A very powerful message against suicide and coping in this world.

BONUS: Best star-crossed tragic romance since Héloise and Abelard. *This alone is worth the price admission.

Don't say something that you take responsibility for
zahann-9892317 May 2022
I understand MBC did wrong but that doesn't justify manipulating ratings of the drama fo which people worked hard for. Complain to MBC. Don't show this kind of immature behavior on social media. Seems like a cult.

Entertaining to a degree.
docdra10 April 2022
Most K-dramas are geared towards women and this one is no exception - look at the breakdown of ratings and you'll see that women favor this more than men. The same is about true for the actual critics, with the lone male (so far) critic taking a bit more of a wait-and-see attitude.

The main issue I see so far is that the main character is, to put it simply, the typical TV story moron. When he's told not to do, touch, or interfere in something - well, you already know he'll do exactly that. It doesn't matter if it has been explained to him why he shouldn't do these things and even once it becomes clear to him that the results can be bad, he still whines like a small child about it. I get it, writers think that women believe this to be cute, so we're stuck with a moron for a lead.

Outside of this, there are a few smaller issues that is typical of most such shows - hospital staff ignoring the character on the floor in the hallway, abilities being used brazenly in one public area and not others, etc. I don't expect perfection, but is logic and consistency too much to ask for.

The acting, setting, and story are passable and while some things appear out of sequence, it can be a good time waster if you don't focus too much on the idiosyncrasies.

Nothing much to say.... This is a very good drama with such a valuable lesson in it. And as usual ARMY'S showing their toxicity . People just watch the drama first and rate. MBC might have caused a mistake and they apologized. Now what are you getting from giving this kind of ratings to such a good drama????!
