Playback singers are the unsung heroes of Indian Cinema (no pun intended). This year, for the very first time, Bollyspice would like to congratulate the following 10 male playback singers for their outstanding work in Indian Cinema in 2011.
10. Mika Singh
No one does a mass entertainer quite like Mika Singh and 2011 was no different with crowd-pleasing hits like like ‘Desi Beats’ (Bodyguard), ‘Dhinka Chika’ (Ready), ‘Saj Dhaj Ke’ (Mausam), ‘Pyaar Do’ (Thank You), ‘F.A.L.T.U’ and ‘Hero’ (Desi Boyz).
9. Shankar Mahadevan
Shankar Mahadevan began the year with a brilliant desi/urban mesh-up, ‘Rola Pe Gaya’ (Patiala House) and followed through with thought provoking ‘Der Lagi’ (Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara) and ‘Roshni’ (Aarakshan). However, it was the obscure ‘Chand Pal Ke Humsafar’ (Mod) that was the most impressive.

As they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. The films on this list are not any different. They were well-intentioned films that disappointed in the end. Now that 2011 is over, we take look at the films that left a great deal to be desired.
Ra.One
The promotion and hype for this film began even before it went to the floor. Releasing in the wake of Endhiran, it was set to outdo everything and anything that has ever been done in Indian cinema. It was to be the Mughal-e-Azam of the 21st Century. Alas, it was not so.
The film had great potential and the storyline would have been credible but it failed in execution. Between the stereotypes, nostalgia and likeable but ultimately unremarkable music, Ra.One is like the kid who brings all his toys to the playground to impress everyone but in the end alienates people.

Let’s face it, 2011 hasn’t been Bollywood’s best year, and there’s much that can be done to make sure 2012 is better. Let’s take a look at what should be the industry’s top fifteen resolutions for the New Year.
1. Use “Hinglish” titles only when appropriate!
I wonder if it’s even fair to label Bombay’s film industry the “Hindi” film industry, because I’d say at least 50% of film titles in 2011 have been in English. Sometimes using English in a title works (i.e. The Dirty Picture, Tanu Weds Manu), but these Hinglish (many times, simply English) titles often elicit a “Wtf.” Titles like Always Kabhi Kabhi, Luv Ka The End and Love U Mr. Kalakaar are unintentionally hilarious (read: stupid) while generic English titles like Game and Ready are just plain lazy. A title is one of a film’s first selling points and...

Though only in the business for about two years, Tanaaz and her team have come up with some really innovative and unique promotions, events, merchandise and even games! Her company was behind the epic lead up to the release of Ra.One with major tie-ins with McDonalds(a Ra.One Happy Meal), the first Playstation game based on a Bollywood film, and even a Coca Cola bottle with Ra.One art. Superstar Shah Rukh Khan is as busy as ever, signing new projects and promoting home productions. In fact, he hasn’t been getting much sleep due to the intense work being put in on his pet project Ra.One. Thankfully, his other productions are being taken care of, such as how Roshan Abbas has held the reigns for Always Kabhi Kabhi. His schooling at St. Columba’s in Delhi was a very strict one, unlike the carefree filmi portrayals. “When I see Aryan and Suhana, I realize schools have become easier now.
