Another entertaining series from Studio Gonzo
Tweekums7 December 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Set in a future where carbon credits are the only money, Tokyo has been almost entirely destroyed by a massive earthquake and where the lucky few live in Atlas; a city within a tower above the jungle that now covers most of Japan. We are quickly introduced to Protagonist Kuniko as she is released from prison and learn that she is friendly with members of an insurgent group known as the Metal Age, potential antagonists are also introduced including Ryoko, who wants to control Atlas; Mikuni, a young girl with super-natural powers who kills anybody who lies to her and Karin, a girl whose sole interest appears to be manipulating the carbon markets in order to become more and more wealthy. As the series progresses Kuniko and the Metal Age must learn what is going on in Atlas; this entails battling against the military and dangerous plants, a daring jail break, an aerial attack on Atlas and forming alliances with people who at first appeared to be antagonists.

Before watching this series I'd heard it was very poor but I guess it is all a matter of taste as I was hooked from the start and watched the whole series in a few days because I was so keen to know what happened next. Kuniko was a great protagonist and most other characters were good even though Ryoko was rather cliché as the evil villain; treating everybody cruelly and even killing children! Kuniko's transsexual friend Momoko is fairly entertaining although she is often a little too over the top as she never misses the opportunity to use a double entendre even in moments of great danger. I liked the character designs; they immediately reminded me of those from 'Last Exile' although that isn't surprising as both were designed by Range Maruta. The comedy elements of the series were a bit hit or miss but the drama worked very well; I never thought the fights went on too long nor were there excessive amounts of time where people sat around explaining the plot.

These comments are based on watching the series in Japanese with English subtitles.
