Third chapter in the serial has Phillipe going after his girl's killers, to avenge her death. A codebook snatched the night before is his only lead. Phillipe's home is under surveillance. The codebook, when decyphered, leads him to The Howling Cat Nightclub, on the outskirts of Paris, and to Irma Vep. Irma Vep's assignment is to get the codebook back from Phillipe, as it contains information regarding all of Les Vampires activities. Phillipe climbing the outside wall of an apartment building and down his mother's chimney (as the front doors of the building were under surveillance) is a well done highlight. A message thrown down the chimney informs Phillipe of a requested rooftop meeting. It is his acquaintance, disguised as a mortician, the one who helped him escape captivity. He comes bringing a poison pen (literally) which was stolen in their escape earlier. Irma Vep shows up to their house disguised as their new maid, and tries (unsuccessfully) to poison him. Mother is kidnapped, but she kills her abductor with the poison pen. Phillipe shoots Irma and another vampire, but the gun was only loaded with blanks. They quickly flee across the Paris rooftops in another good climax, another memorable scene.

The opening title reads 'The Red Codebook', but the end title reads 'The Red Cypher'.
