When I first saw that Cliffy "Shuffle", I assumed the chap was doomed. I did not know this story was based on real life events. When did I determine this to be non-fiction? When he married the adorable girl 40 years his junior. This does not typically occur without excessive wealth, loads of silicone, or both. WOW! What an inspiration to think the under underdog could even attempt to compete, let alone become a champion.
Uncertain if this was a promotion for the vegetarian lifestyle, running with galoshes, clean simple farm living, or saving romance for senior moments. Whatever the rational for his surprise success, I thoroughly enjoyed this inspirational film. For those of us with lifelong impediments or unfulfilled secret yearnings, seeing a man achieve a perceived impossible goal was extremely stimulating and satisfying.
The main role initially reminded me of a Mr. Bean type character and was expecting a parallel with some silly slapstick, and antiquated, hackneyed humor. However, I was impressed with the more realistic casual pace and capture of bucolic life. The story never seemed to lag and the dialogue provided several sincere humorous moments. The film portrayed a unique ability for the audience to share the challenges, disappointments and spectacular triumphs.
High recommend for the poor fellow who never amounted to much for most of life, but took the bull by the horns and accomplished an amazing feat. Beautiful views of Australia countryside, with gentle mix of calm, tension, and joy.
