Much anticipated Warner superhero movie, “Black Adam” predictably took top place at the South Korean box office over the weekend. But it did little to arrest the current downturn in what used to be the world’s fourth largest theatrical market.
“Black Adam” earned 2.33 million between Friday and Sunday, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic) and 3.14 million in the five days since its opening on Wednesday.
The film played on more than 1,500 screens and achieved a 47 market share in Korea. In comparison, “Black Adam” earned 67 million in North America from 4,350 screens.
Its opening was weak by most local standards, too. “Black Adam” only ranked as the tenth best opening in Korea of 2022, a year when cinemas were operating at reduced capacity for four months.
Lower-placed films held steady over the weekend, but, with no other significant new releases to challenge “Black Adam...

While the Busan International Film Festival was busily hailing a return to normality the slump at South Korea’s commercial box office deepened dramatically over the most recent weekend.
Cinemagoing nationwide was worth only 4.20 million between Friday and Sunday, the lowest weekend total since April and a time before Korean cinemas shed their Covid restrictions.
The weekend’s top film “Life Is Beautiful” managed the lowest first place score of any film this year, with a weekend haul of just 777,000, according to data from Kobiz, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic).
To its credit, the film climbed from second place in its fourth weekend on release, but it only overtook a “Confidential Assignment 2: International” that has been on release for two months, and its four-week cumulative amounts to just 5.44 million.
“Confidential Assignment 2” slipped 60 with a 661,000 weekend score and occupied second slot. After seven weeks on release,...

For the second weekend running, comedy action film “Confidential Assignment 2: International” held top spot at the South Korean box office. And it did so with a massive 75 share of the market.
But as the Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) holiday retreated into the rear-view mirror numbers, both for the sequel film and the nationwide box office, came crashing down.
“Confidential Assignment 2” earned 6.89 million over the latest Friday to Sunday period, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). That figure was down 57 compared with its opening salvo of 21.0 million a week earlier.
Still, since opening on Sept. 7, the film has already amassed 35.2 million. That makes it the fifth highest grossing film of the year to date, ahead of “Hunt” and behind “Dr Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”
The film was directed by Lee Seok-hoon and executive produced by hitmaker Jk Youn. It stars Hyun bin,...

Julia Roberts and George Clooney landed at the top of the international box office chart this weekend as Universal/Working Title’s Ticket to Paradise expanded its offshore rollout. Adding 39 markets for a 12.1M session in 46 lifted the overseas cume to 14.8M with several majors still to come; domestic begins on October 21. Collectively, the new markets this session performed above Last Christmas and Yesterday, and in line with The Lost City and Bridget Jones’s Baby.
The reteam of Roberts and Clooney is the second starry romantic comedy to hit cinemas this year, after Paramount’s Sandra Bullock/Channing Tatum adventure The Lost City which ultimately grossed about 191M globally. That film followed a more staggered release pattern overseas, largely debuting after domestic.
While we’re still seeing a dearth of new titles overseas, the current corridor is fertile ground for comedy in some markets, thus the pre-domestic release on the Ol Parker-directed Ticket.
