An unorthodox romantic thriller that is both heartwarming and shattering
Decision To Leave
Dir. Park Chan-Wook
Rating: 9/10
Decision To Leave, Park Chan-Wook's first film feature after 2016's The Handmaiden, is both a dark romance and a twisty mystery in which characters are morally questionable. Park Chan-Wook has proven to be one of the best filmmakers today. With Decision To Leave, the feeling of misdirection and being lost at a certain point of the film, comes together so expertly at the end, with every move intended so intricately. Almost every frame of the film is gorgeously shot, accompanied by such seductive chemistry from the lead characters. The chemistry between Tang Wei and Park Hae-il comes naturally despite their questionable morale.
Park Chan-wook has made a satisfactorily, old-fashioned detective noir with a touch of humor and eeriness. The editing made you feel like you were watching an old-fashioned detective film with constant zooming in and out and a fast-paced camera movement and it worked so well. Decision To Leave is different from Chan-Wook's The Handmaiden or Oldboy, but the film is masterfully constructed and ended in a very compelling and tragic love story.
The issue I have with the film is the humor feels forced and does not really come naturally, especially for Kyung-Pyo's character. Additionally, the movie is too long that it is dragging, and some elements are not really necessary, and they could have ended about 20 minutes earlier. However, the ending is so powerful that you can easily forgive the flaws, and the last five minutes of the film will remain in you. The second part of the film became more like a Romcom, and I would understand why impatient audiences would feel lost and misdirected, but it all comes together perfectly in the third act.
Decision To Leave is packed with great editing, cinematography, transition, writing, and directing. It is the kind of film that will inspire a lot of filmmakers and writers. Decision To Leave is one of the best films of 2022.
