The Tale of a Gutsy Ninja

Warning: Spoilers
The second part of Jiraiya's special ends up being better than the first. Continues with the 3rd great ninja war. In Amegakure, the Three pupils of Hiruzen fight against Hanzo, the famous warrior and leader of the village. On a fierce battle, everyone results dead but them. Though they can't defeat him, Hanzo acknowledges their strength for surviving, and, knowing that Konoha is going to win the war, he lets them live and calls Jiraiya, Tsunade, and Orochimaru as the three legendary sannin. They leave and take a rest in a cave, covered from the rain. Here, is shown a change in Tsunade's attitude towards Jiraiya. She asks him what's he is going to do, and when he says he may keep traveling, she wonders why he simply doesn't stay at Konoha. He answers that he didn't reach his destiny yet. Then, they are interrupted by an orphan who approaches them. Tsunade calls to ask what they want, which turns out to be food. The first orphan calls his friends, Konan (The blue haired girl alive in the present) and Nagato (a kid with red hair covering his eyes). They eat fast as they were starving, and then they follow the Sannin. Tsunade is surprised, and Konan gifts her an origami flower. The first orphan, Yahiko (orange hair), asks them to be trained as ninja. Orochimaru suggests to kill them as an act of mercy, but Jiraiya firmly declines, and says that he will stay with the orphans to train them until they can survive on their own. Tsunade is surprised, but accepts his decision, and leaves with Orochimaru. Some short time passes, and Jiraiya gets the orphans a shelter and prepares them food, but he doesn't teach them nin jutsu yet, which was Yahiko's desire. In dinner, after Jiraiya says that one day there will be peace, Yahiko argues by saying that their parents were murdered, and that he wants to make the enemy suffer what they suffered. But he also knows that the war will never end that way. He finishes his speech telling he hates how it always rain in the village, his dream is to change it, and protect everyone. Jiraiya is stunned to see how much they suffered, and after seeing Nagato cry over the death of his parents. One day, while Jiraiya struggles to write his book, Konan arrives suddenly and tells him that Nagato and Yahiko are in trouble. When they reach them, they find a shinobi from Iwagakure dead. Yahiko is hurt, and Nagato cries. Jiraiya finally sees Nagato's eyes, and discovers the Rinnegan, a special doijutsu, more powerful than the Sharingan (which seemingly was held by the Sage of the six paths, who created the ninjutsu). So, given the recent situation, he agrees to teach them in order to protect themselves. That same night, Jiraiya finds Nagato crying outside over the incident. He comforts him telling that even if what he did was right or wrong, at the end, he saved Yahiko's life, no one can blame him for that. Jiraiya explains to Nagato that hurting others will make them hate you, but knowing the feeling of being hurt makes you understand them. He advices him to grow and find an answer to understand others. Off screen, three years pass, and finally the three are ready to survive on their own. Nagato can control his Rinnegan, Konan manages very well the jutsu with papers, while Yahiko is strong with element water. Jiraiya tells that his job is done, and gives them some farewell words. They're sad, but are ready to survive now without their sensei. The war remains ongoing for several more years, and Jiraiya returns to the fight along Tsunade and Orochimaru. They summon their respective animals, and impress during battle. But one day, Jiraiya receives the news on a toad that his students died. He cries and thinks he made the wrong decisions, so Tsunade comforts him. They return to Konoha, and eventually, Minato, Jiraiya's next pupil, helps to win the war for Konoha. At the cemetery, Jiraiya talks about his future travels to find his destiny, while Orochimaru ignores them and leaves. Jiraiya asks him if he doesn't want to teach someone his knowledge, but Orochimaru refuses, saying that he'll learn every possible jutsu, and is already thinking about living a long life. This tells that Orochimaru started his dark path after The war. The episode finishes with a magnificent scene: Minato reads at home Jiraiya's finished novel. He loves how is like an autobiography, including the protagonist's encounter with a shinobi enemy. Jiraiya found an answer to the question of war, he won't rest until he finds peace, an end to the cycle of war and hate, he'll never give up. Minato asks to use the protagonist's name for his son. Kushina appears pregnant and agrees. With a beautiful score, the name of the protagonist is Naruto, which came to Jiraiya while he was eating ramen. He is made Naurto's godfather by Minato and Kushina. Tje 4th Hokage feels his sensei is the best shinobi to be the godfather of his son.

Without doubt, the last scene is one of the top of the series. Kushina appears for the first time, pregnant with Naruto. And with Minato, they look cute and and as a loving couple. Plus, they treated Jiraiya like family, especially Minato. It reveals how connected were Naruto and Jiraiya since the beginning, including the ramen. Other nice moments of the episode were between Jiraiya and Tsunade. Unlike in the first part, here she looked like closer to him. Like she missed him when he traveled away, and she slowly realized he was looking for a different destiny than her. Still, he felt the rejection from the past, and that's probably why he never stayed. Looks like he never could stay a long time at Konoha. And that would explain why he delayed in meeting Naruto. Could be guessed that when Minato and Kushina died, Jiraiya was aware that Naruto was alone as a baby. He could have talked to Hiruzen about who would raise him, is those moments were in some filler, it would be great. Then, the episode also introduced Nagato, Konan and Yahiko. Jiraiya's noble act to compromise in taking care of three orphans in a foreign land, for three years, just tells the kind of shinobi he is. About Nagato's Rinnegan, I'm not sure if it was the best idea. I've had enough with the Sharingan, but Pain's eyes come from somewhere. What I don't like is the story Jiraiya recalled about the Sage of six paths. If the rinnegan is so powerful and old, how it was implanted or passed to a boy in Amegakure? It's random, and hard to explain. Where are the genetics? Then, Yahiko was the strongest character of the three. He has a resemblance to Pain, but it's clear they're not the same person. He wanted revenge for his parents, but at the end, he realized that he wanted to lead the Rain village for a brighter future. I liked also the talk Jiraiya had with Nagato. He tried to teach him the way the ninja world works, and how people is not used to think before acting. People hurts and those hurted hurt back. It's simple. If there's an answer to stop that, it's complicated. The storyline got into a deep philosophical question, without needing it. This is important because it will make more strange the ending for Pain's arc.
