How is this a movie?
kodylenzerkl2 March 2024
This entire movie starts from nothing and somehow manages to become even worst. The entire time you think it'll be one of those sports movies where the main character proves themselves and its heart warming. But no, guess what? The main character isn't even the main character. Infact, there isn't even a main character. It's just a mumbled mess of complete nothing-ness. Nothing every happens, all the way to the end. This is literally the most useless, boring movie I have ever seen in my life. The dialogue between actors are even worse. They start replying before they even finish their sentence.

Complete Rubbish
atalivar552 March 2024
This movie is the one that has compelled me to make a review. I've seen many atrocious films but this is the worst film. Full of stereotypical characters, boring plot, little integration between the actors and real footage. The acting is pitiful, the script is criminal and it was almost so bad, I could have watched it all over again, just to laugh at the total ineptitude. I'm glad I didn't see this at the cinema or I'd have had to ask for my money back!!

Its like they took a load of random ideas and stuck them together (not very well either!!)

I awarded this film 1 - a first for me and I consider I was being far too generous.

Accurate yet awful.

View with caution....like, if you literally have nothing else to do.

Im a big hockey fan, so i was really looking forward to this and started watching it the first chance i got. Its a pretty accurate depiction of what beer league hockey is from the types of characters that play beer league, to things you experience and encounter during late night games.

Outside of that, what a trash heap of a movie. Ill be the first to say my bar isnt set too high when it comes to movies--it doesnt have to be an Oscar worthy movie for me to enjoy it, but holy cow. The acting is terrible to the point that its a distraction.

Did the director think some of these scenes were passable? How bad does it have to get for someone to yell "cut" and do it again? I didnt even get to part where the game actually started! It was that bad.

I Got tricked into watching a beer league hocky game
anthonyiaclaims7 March 2024
This is not a movie, it's a beer league hockey game and nothing more. There is a reason that there were only 2 guys in the stands. While I didn't pay for the "game" I wasted my time. If I wanted to watch a hockey game, it would definitely not be this one. Some comments and locker room banter do not make this into a movie.

Watch Shorsey or Slapstick or even Mighty Ducks (which is referenced several times in this movie. They are all far superior.

I would have given it a 3 but I took off 2 stars for the fake out.

Quite a rare movie these days. What it means to be a man in the 21st century.
stevelivesey-371836 March 2024
Firstly, so many weird one star or ten star reviews on here already. Trust me, this movie is neither of those things.

Secondly, it's nice to have a movie where a man shows us what it means to be a man these days. I mean with all the modern self doubt, loneliness and desire to make friends as well as feeling part of something.

The setting is an amateur game of hockey , late at night. The action takes place in the space of one night and one game. Out protagonist is reticent to go to the game but along the way, the audience can feel him warming to the game and his teammates.

The film has a very 'Clerks' type feel to it with characters in and round the rink and the game adding to the drama whilst the game is happening.

I would recommend it if you like ice hockey, Clerks, bro movies or you just want an easy watch with some humour.

Literally like spending a night at the rink!
legettejessical4 March 2024
If you're a beer leaguer, or just love a beer leaguer, this movie is like spending a night at the rink. Not only does it provide good laughs, but you'll instantly know who's a "Kevin" or a "Spondy" at your local barn.

This was a fun and easy watch that reminded me that all roads lead to beer league. If you're lucky, you're still lacing up late into life and remembering that it's about more than who wins or loses, it's about just being there and having fun and appreciating the goons beside you when you do it.

The Late Game does that, with a couple great cameos. Like all things beer-league-related, not suitable for your little kids to watch unless they're already used to you dropping f-bombs on the daily.

A good honest hockey indi
dean_martin-064374 March 2024
Come on guys, really what's with the 1 star haters...?

This is just a good honest hockey indi, nothing more nothing less.

The story is typical, the acting OK and production is on the cheaper side but thought the editing for the most part punched above its weight.

Most importantly it has you smiling and laughing at the right spots.

I imagine that some people were expecting a bigger production, or just not used to the 'Shorsey' type repartee.

I'll watch out for this directors stuff, expect it will only get better.

This one is definitely worth your 80minute investment, and had me wanting to watch 'Slapshot' again.

Enjoy.

If itsd for you its a fun watch
mitchkyle-7291115 March 2024
Id imagine people rating this lower are coming in with much higher expectations. If you tend to like comedy movies centered around brotherhood and a little bit of sports, it's well worth the watch. Its not exactly clerks but for some reason that's what it reminds me of, but less gas station and more hockey. It's independent, the characters are a little quirky at times but if you give it the full 90 minutes the movie really comes together. Is it Predictable, yes. Acting, not Oscar level but serviceable. Do I regret watching, absolutely not, I enjoyed, and will likely get a second viewing eventually.

Very funny!
fireman-263354 March 2024
Very Clerks-y feel to it. Totally accurate of what it's really like. The referee, the zamboni driver, all of it. Worth your time for a laugh! Every team has guys like this on it, from the new guy to the captain. I say it has a Clerks feel since it takes place in pretty much one place and looks like some late night filming to it, much like the title, some of the best things happen after hours. For those of us who take their source of entertainment and enjoyment from this sport, it is a refreshing take on things. Even the protagonists are accurate. Side commentary from side characters is hilarious and accurate.

Future hockey cult classic?
jwingardiner10 March 2024
I absolutely love the "takes place in real time" and "slice of life" film format/genre- in this case, the world you get dropped into is late night beer league hockey. While I'm not a hockey player, I could definitely relate to the banter- mostly from my men's league hoops days. Cast had great chemistry. Cinematography (especially the game play) was stellar- which is definitely not always the case with low budget indies. Overall, a great time spent with these random dudes, learning about a world I had zero idea existed. In time, I can totally see this film becoming a cult classic in the hockey world.

Gets almost everything right
bpnxyvbz4 March 2024
This is a fun film that gets almost everything right about playing late-night beer league hockey. It's not perfect and won't be up for any Oscars, but if you know the nutty world of hockey players who stay up late purely for the love of the game, it will be worthwhile.

I've played adult rec-league hockey into my seventies(!) and I assure you all the locker room and on-ice hi-jinks in The Late Game have taken place sometime, somewhere. In fact, I could offer up to the screenwriter & director a loong list of other hysterical happenings. But they didn't ask me. I'm eternally grateful they didn't rely on the sports-movie trope of slo-mo, BTW!

If you follow the ONLY hockey podcast that matters, RA from Spittin' Chiclets does an excellent job as the Zamboni driver.

To the geniuses who contributed barely intelligible pans here: this is what's known as a low-budget first film. These guys have cracked the door open and you will see more from them, I guarantee it. Whether a better-funded version that gets to play with plot lines (e.g.romantic) left undeveloped, a complete re-boot, or a completely different film and story,

Watch these guys. They play a game that's tough and unpredictable, just like "Hollywood."

Funny-yet-accurate portrayal of beer league sports
elvisrevenge20 February 2024
This movie is a near-perfect snapshot of a random, middle-of-the-week rec league hockey game. The building they play in is empty, but not cartoonishly decrepit, and the characters introduced aren't stereotypes or fit a trope. Rather, you get the feeling any one of the guys on Polly's Pies could show up at your next meet. They're funny, but not in a gag humor, setup-punchline kinda way, and when it comes to the actual hockey, the action matches real life. It's sloppy, chatty, tense, but not overdramatic or epic. Much like how Creed veered away from the unrealistic haymakers and uppercuts of Rocky, this gives the realistic speed, strategy and momentum of amateur-at-best hockey. It's just another game, and you get that sense watching the movie, but while that may sound boring to some, it really gives the movie a lot of charm. It's an easy watch, a low-stakes slice-of-life comedy that you'd come across at 2 pm on Comedy Central back in the day, and I mean that as a compliment. I recommend it!

A fun movie
Movieguy686930 April 2024
This was a really fun movie! I don't understand the 1 star reviews.

I am usually really hard on movies, but I thought it was really enjoyable and funny.

Some other reviews said they were tricked into watching a movie about a beer league hockey game, but it literally says that in the description.

If you take things so seriously you can't enjoy a sweet and relatable movie about a late night hockey game.......then this movie isn't for you.

If you enjoy character driven movies where the point is to enjoy the journey not the destination give this a watch.

Really impressive what they did for a small indy film.
