Tom Arnold has joined the cast of writer, producer, and director Rohit Karn Batra’s drama “The Gun on Second Street.”
The film, for which Storyboard Media launched international sales during last year’s Cannes Film Market, is produced by Guy J. Louthan of Ransom Films with Rikin Shah serving as one of the executive producers.
An allegory of the gun crisis in the United States, “The Gun on Second Street” follows two Pittsburgh police partners and best friends who are called to an uneventful domestic violence dispute on Second Street. This quickly escalates to a violent scuffle as Officer Tj Meadows III accidentally shoots and kills his partner, Officer Kevin Cooper, with his backup gun. Years later, no longer a cop and still traumatized, Tj moves back to Pittsburgh and finds his way to Kevin’s widow, Kacie. Arnold will take on the role of Police Chief Richard “Dick” Steinberger,...

Prime Video got off to a fast start this summer with the release of The Boys season 3 on June 3. Now, as we enter the dog days, Prime Video is set to keep the warm weather good times rolling with a new twist on an old classic. That’s right, Amazon’s list of new releases for August 2022 is highlighted by some good old-fashioned baseball.
A League of Their Own, the TV adaptation of Penny Marshall’s 1992 movie, is set to premiere on Aug. 12. Like the movie before it, the series will dramatize the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League which saw women playing America’s pastime while the major leagues were on pause for World War II. Abbi Jacobson (Broad City) co-created the show and will star as catcher Carson Shaw.
Other Prime Video Originals of note this month include season 2 of British comedy The Outlaws on and the Ron Howard-directed Thirteen Lives,...

Prime Video will continue rolling out its summer slate in the month of August, releasing new original series, as well as a mix of suspenseful films, action movies and more.
Amazon’s series version of “A League of Their Own” will debut its eight-episode first season on Aug. 12, introducing new characters and stories set in the historical opening of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League (Aagpbl).
Ron Howard’s “Thirteen Lives” tells the real-life story of how a young boys’ soccer team was rescued from the Thai mountain cave where they got stuck for 10 days along with their coach.
Other new film arrivals include hits from earlier this summer, “The Lost City” starring Sandra Bullock, Daniel Radcliffe, Channing Tatum and Brad Pitt, as well as “Sonic the Hedgehog 2.” Academy Award-nominated film “Licorice Pizza” also arrives on Prime Video this month.
Freevee will also have new arrivals this month.

In normal times, the idea of a Richard Harris Intl. Film Festival (which runs Oct. 20-26; richardharrisfilmfestival.com) seems entirely appropriate to the legions of fans of the late legendary Irish stage and screen actor, but since Oct. 1 marked Harris’ 90th birthday, it feels absolutely essential. Oscar-nominated twice, first for Lindsey Anderson’s “This Sporting Life” in 1964 and then for Jim Sheridan’s “The Field” in 1991, Harris is perhaps best-known today for creating the character of Albus Dumbledore on film in “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” (2001) or co-starring in Oscar best pictures such as Clint Eastwood’s “Unforgiven” (1992) and Ridley Scott’s (2000) “Gladiator.” But while there’s no disputing the lasting quality of those performances, there’s so much more to the Harris legacy, which begins on West End stages back in the mid-’50s.
To commemorate Harris’ birthday, Variety reached out to his sons, director Damian and actors Jared and Jamie.

Another soggy mafia saga set in and around a Delhi business family, and one that compares very poorly with Kanu Behl's "Titli" and Shanker Raman's "Gurgaon", "Line Of Descent" leaves a puzzling, bitter 0aftertaste.
It's not such an awful film. It's just so unnecessary it resembles a fifth or sixth generation copy of "The Godfather" with Prem Chopra?giggle?playing Brando while Ronit Roy, Neeraj Kabi and Ali Haji play the three sons quite well. Abhay Deol, the well-meaning though ill-informed cop who busts the Sinha family's a**. And Hollywood has-been Brendan Fraser (the big daddy from original "The Mummy" franchise) makes an entry midway as an arms dealer of indeterminate race and an even more uncertain function in a plot that wants to be savage, funny, poignant and relevant, and trips over its own overweening ambitions.

"I can't die with sins buried in my soul." Gravitas has debuted a full Us trailer for a crime drama from India titled Line of Descent. Three brothers from a Delhi crime family feud over the future of their enterprise. Meanwhile, an undercover police officer attempts to end the family's legacy, and an arms dealer conspires with the brothers. As wacky as it sounds, Brendan Fraser plays the arms dealer - Charu. The cast includes Abhay Deol, Ronit Roy, Neeraj Kabi, Prem Chopra, Ali Haji, and Anisha Victor. Line of Descent is described as "a classic crime narrative in the backdrop of Delhi merges a dysfunctional, mafia family at war with each other as an undercover officer fights his demons by assisting in their downfall." This looks like your standard crime family epic, though I have to admit, Fraser's narration livens it up in just the right way. Here's the...

For Westerners making movies in Asia, logistics can be problematic. And, for Asian filmmakers able to navigate local conditions, screenwriting for international audiences and access to markets can still be stumbling blocks.
Veteran producer and executive Guy Louthan is now developing a business that straddles East and West, deploys American production standards and techniques, and maximizes Asian cultural impact. It also comes at a time when global interest in Indian and Southeast Asian content is growing thanks to the aggressive local production strategies of Amazon, Netflix and HBO.
The Palanquin company that Louthan formed with British director Roland Joffe aims to bridge the gap with a slate of its own movies, close connections to local production services firms and a possible film fund once the business model has proved itself. You’ve been in the business a long time.
I love working and being challenged by the process. I know the industry is changing. It’s reinvented itself a few times in just the amount of time that I’ve been a part of it. It’s always about finding new and exciting material.
It’s unusual to have a crime thriller set in India that’s not a Bollywood film.
The script had all of the best qualities of classic crime literature with very universal themes.

A TV series about the Wwi spy Mata Hari, directed by Roland Joffe, is one of two projects that adorn the debut slate of new production company Palanquin. Noir-thriller “Call Center” completes the initial line up.
Palanquin is jointly headed by producer Guy Louthan and Joffe. The company will focus on producing Southeast Asian projects including India-based film and television projects.
Joffe believes that that the true story of Mata Hari is more bizarre than the lurid reputation that she has since attracted as an exotic dancer and spy. To be produced by John Fitzgerald and Julian Grimmond (“The Amazing Race”), “Mata Hari” is structured as an eight-part series that charts the extraordinary life of Magritte, a Dutch girl who escaped an abusive childhood, fled to the Far East with a brilliant but manipulative adventurer who was more than twice her age, and was sucked into the world of espionage,...

Toronto Film Festival’s audience prize positions Peter Farrelly’s “Green Book” in prime Oscar territory — five audience award winners have gone on to capture best picture, including “Slumdog Millionaire,” “12 Years a Slave,” “The King’s Speech,” “American Beauty” and “Chariots of Fire.” In 2016, the prize went to “La La Land,” while last year’s award went to “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” Both were nominated for best picture.
Peter Debruge wrote in his review of “Green Book” for Variety: “Featuring a pair of terrific performances by Viggo Mortensen as a goombah with a heart of gold and Mahershala Ali as multilingual composer-musician Don Shirley, the story may be unique, yet it goes pretty much exactly the way you might expect, with one huge twist: The credits read “Directed by Peter Farrelly” — which means this feel-good tour through American bigotry was made by one-half of the sibling duo responsible...

Brendan Fraser’s mummy-killing days may be behind him, but Encino Man will rise again. The actor has just been announced as the villain in “The Field,” a Bollywood gangster drama marking the directorial debut of Rohit Karn Batra. He’s set to star as a gun-runner named Charu whose “illicit dealings with the Indian underworld wedges him in the middle of the family implosion.”

Ray Liotta was initially attached the project when first it was announced in 2014, but alterations to the screenplay led to personnel changes as well. “The more the script evolved,” said Batra, “the more obvious it became Brendan was the best choice for the idiosyncratic role of Charu. For a director to explore this journey with him in a place like India is nothing less than a once in a lifetime opportunity.” India isn’t as well known to the outside world for its hard-hitting genre fare as it is for its musicals, but anyone who’s seen Anurag Kashyap’s five-hour “Gangs of Wasseypur” knows that “The Field” won’t be the first mob movie to emerge from Bollywood.
