Learn more- Tom lives in a dysfunctional family unit. He is also being bullied at school. Larry and Wallace Colton give him a black eye because he won't fight back. Walking home that day Tom is stopped by a stranger who asks about the injury. He is befriended by R. J., a talented guitar player who is also a martial artist. R J begins giving him private Tae Kwon Do lessons.
Tom is kicked out of his home at age fourteen after an argument with his mother. His poor but loving grandparents take Tom and his brother in for the summer. Grandpa Bert is a Texas Storyteller, whittles and plays cowboy ballads on the harmonica.
Tom and R. J., form a local rock band called The Odds and Ends with neighborhood guitarist Val Lucas. The group throws a party to celebrate their first gig. Upon seeing their measly pay, Val Lucas quits the band. Tom argues with his mom for getting home late that night. The next day after school he discovers that his drums are missing. His mother has sold them.
Toms grandparents buy the drums back. Grandpa Bert confronts the mean step dad then takes Tom and Robert to live with them permanently.
