Apparently, axe murderers in the 1800's are a hot commodity right now; or rather one axe murderer is the subject of such popularity. You've seen the mini-series, as well as the TV movie . but now get ready for Lizzie Borden: The Movie; starring Chloe Sevigny and Kristen Stewart. The Hollywood Reporter announced recently that the pair are in talks to play Borden and her live-in maid, Bridget Sullivan, respectively. Sevigny sounds like she's already signed on, with Stewart being reported as circling the "early negotiations" phase. Directing the project is Waste Land's Pieter Van Hees, who looks to add a relatively big project to his resume with this untitled film. Both actors are in a good spot in their careers to spice things up. With Chloe Sevigny just about to break out the weirdness in American Horror Story: Hotel, and with Kristen Stewart branching out into any and...

Played just this year and last in a pair of campy Christina Ricci movies for the Lifetime Channel, famous axe murderer Lizzie Borden is also heading to the cinema screen in yet another project. Belgian director Pieter Van Hees (Waste Land) will direct an as-yet-untitled psychological thriller based on Borden's sordid story, with Chloe Sevigny and Kristen Stewart both in line to star."Lizzie Borden took an axe and gave her mother 40 whacks," goes the rhyme. "When she saw what she had done, she gave her father 41."Borden was actually acquitted of the 1892 murders of her father and stepmother in Fall River, Massachusetts, but she remains the prime suspect for Bordenologists who continue to study the case. Other potential perps that have been suggested include the Bordens' live-in maid Bridget Sullivan, Lizzie's sister Emma, her illegitimate half-brother William, and her uncle John Morse. In the new film, Sevigny will take the role of Lizzie,...

It seems there's something in the air in Hollywood about Lizzie Borden. It was only a couple of years ago that we got the event series "The Lizzie Borden Chronicles" starring Christina Ricci, and now the notorious killer is headed to the big screen, with some big names attached. THR reports that Kristen Stewart and Chloe Sevigny will team up for an untitled movie set to be directed by Pieter Van Hees ("Waste Land"). The story will chronicle the events that led up to Borden's brutal murder of her father and step-mother (with an axe no less), though she was never convicted of the crime. Sevigny will play Borden, with Stewart as the live-in maid Bridget Sullivan who testified at the trial, and who some people allege gave a deathbed confession stating she protected Lizzie by changing her testimony. Crime author Ed McBain also once floating the theory that Sullivan and Borden had an affair,...

Diffusion is the name of the game in Waste Land, a brooding police procedural from Belgium that depends more on its pervasive ambience than plot twists. Actually, it's probably a disserve to describe the newest film by writer/director Pieter Van Hees (Left Bank) as a procedural, because that implies a set order of events -- a murder, an investigation, a neat resolution -- and, too often, little more. Certainly, Waste Land includes those expected elements, but it's far less interested in the game than the players, primarily homicide detective Leo Woeste (Jeremy Renier). Judging by outward appearances, Leo has it all: a respected position in the police force, as well as a supportive marriage mate in Katrien (Natali Broods) and a bright and healthy young...

Belgian director Pieter Van Hees is a slippery one. He made his feature debut with The Left Bank, a dark supernaturally charged thriller before moving on to clever action-comedy Dirty Mind. The tonal shift between the films was dramatic - and impressive - and made all the more surprising by the fact that Van Hees insists the two films, as different as they are, are the first two parts of a thematic trilogy that he completes now with Waste Land.An ultra dark crime thriller - think the recent wave of Nordic Noir, but grottier - Van Hees' latest is a selection of both Toronto and Fantastic Fest and while we missed the trailer when it first arrived a few days back we've spotted it now...

While a certain “freshness” might be lacking in the Midnight Madness programme, the Vanguard section (and Wavelengths to be unveiled next month) is where there might be more cerebral bang for the buck and programmer Colin Geddes has a nice canvas to paint on with the bunch announced below. Running down the list we find a must see in the Cannes sensation Alleluia (Fabrice Du Welz), which had the entire Ioncinema team in awestruck mode, and then we have Berberian Sound Studio‘s Peter Strickland breaking out the world premiere for The Duke of Burgundy (see pic above). After penning several Ulrich Seidl items over the years (Import/Export, Paradise Trilogy), Veronika Franz might outclass The Shining for most creepiest young child twin set with Severin Fiala for the Venice Film Fest selected Goodnight Mommy. Takashi Miike is naturally invited back to the fest with his latest, and Spring, which...
