Turkey Trot
bobcobb30115 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
We got what is becoming an annual tradition of Kasie being in a hostage crisis, a concept she mentioned here, and has struggled with in the build to this in multiple installments, but this was probably the least exciting of the bunch. If only they built up this backstory with Knight a little bit other than playing dramatic music when her sister's boyfriend was introduced, with no explanation as to why that should have been there.

This was an okay episode by any stretch, a good story in the A and B side, but overall we have seen a lot better takes on the hostage crisis over the years on this and other series.

Quite good!

Warning: Spoilers
The 20th season of "NCIS" has not been the greatest. Some episodes of this season have really missed the mark. "Turkey Trot" is one of the better entries in this season for me.

Let's start with the good.

. The production values of the episode are great as usual. "Turkey Trot" is well-directed, the music fits the scenery and the acting's pretty good. Katrina Law gives her best perfomance as Jessica Knight, David Blue is quite intimidating as the villain.

. The story, which is mostly compelling, gets surprisingly deep and presents a beautiful message about caring for one's family. Liked to learn more about Knight too.

But....

. The mystery is quite predictable at times. It wasn't so hard to figure out Robin's new boyfriend is the culprit. Still am not a huge fan of Casey and not all of the jokes hit.

Overall, a solid episode.

7/10 HK.

Maybe the best episode of the season!

Good to see Lilan Bowden in a prominent role. Suspenseful plot, good acting by the villain, interesting dialogue between Jess and Robin. Not sure what some of the other reviewers are expecting, but it's NCIS. It hit all the high notes, had good interaction among the main characters, and was a fun hour of television. Just let yourself enjoy things without nitpicking everything all the time.

In my opinion, not that they're going to read this and follow it, the writing team would do well to dig deeper into the backstories of Knight and Parker. They're two good characters who could still use some fleshing out. Hopefully we get even more of that soon.

NCIS ran out of original ideas.

Warning: Spoilers
We've seen this all before.

-NCIS members are held hostage from a deranged family member of someone in the past.

-Estranged family member suddenly appears out of nowhere with some wild scheme to make money(See Tony DiNozzo's father) -And of course the obligatory misdirection in the opening scene.

At this point I am only watching out of habit. It's sad the see the writing degrade this level. One would think the highly paid writing staff of a long running series could come up with a new angle once in a while but apparently not.

Please, Please, Please NCIS family, do much better than rehashing old and tired storylines.

A few errors
moov_e_c_er19 January 2023
What federal agent would ever turn off their phone, let alone hand it over? What agents would not notice the multiple issues with the one character? I can see the attempt was distract Knight with her sister but seriously are all cast characters go stupid when they go off shift? Everybody loses their instincts their logic their training and understanding etc.? I saw this episode a few times and all I see is multiple errors outside the universe of the story: yes it's the same characters yes it's another episode but no very little of this episode makes sense in reality and in the context of a show.

How Awful
vintagegeek23 November 2022
Really. How awful can one episode be. Especially a holiday episode. This was same mess as all their team member gets held captive episodes. The girls spend the whole show yelling at each other. The detective and tech work was almost non existent. Its like they took an old script and just changed the names. There were so few actors, other than park picnic, it looks like it was shot during the height of Covid. Truly in the bottom three of all 455 episodes. Some weeks are getting hard to watch. Did someone cut the budget to twenty five percent of old shows. Incredible that the actors are putting up with such dribble.

Ugh

Warning: Spoilers
New phones are water proof. Find my Phone on iPhones work even when the phone is off. It annoys me when writers take such liberties. In the old days this would make total sense. In today's climate, they need to update their tropes. I love this show. It is one of my favorites, but sometimes the writing is so lazy and contrived that it physically hurts my brain.

I am also tired of the women characters being the ones to constantly get kidnapped or loast or shot at or whatever. It gets super annoying. This episode is not nearly as terrible as it could be, but is still in the top six of awful episodes.
