The arcade version of Rygar...not so fun.
I reviewed the NES Rygar which I found to be a fun adventure which has drastic changes compared to this version. I played this as a kid a couple of times and I could not get past the first level. Played it again on an emulator and got to level 21 and it kicked me out. I was spending probably a dollar on each level. Many arcade games amp up the difficulty due to the game being on the short side or they just want to take your quarters. This one has over 21 levels! I kept wondering when will it end, but it kept going and the amount of monsters on the screen leads me to believe if you are able to win this thing you ascend into heaven or something!
The story is pretty light, which is expected for an arcade game. A warrior must journey forth and defeat the evil in the land. Standard stuff as you must use the disc armor to fight hordes of enemies all in the hopes of making it to a end that does not seem to even exist! No bosses to combat, which is good as this game features the dreaded one hit and you are dead!
The game play is a bit different than the NES version, but fighting enemies with the disc armor is still at the game's core. Too bad the weapon is slow and the enemies plentiful as they attack from behind then send more enemies when you turn to deal with those enemies! The NES version would feature an overhead view that this one does not have, its only variance are stages where you must climb a rope and get killed multiple times.
If you play this today, chances are you are doing so on an emulator. If that is the case and you try your best to get through it, prepare to hear the warrior scream multiple times! I do not know, there may be some sort of super gamer that can get through this thing, but I sure could not. I could not even get through one stage without dying and having to plop in another digital quarter to continue. The graphics are good, but the music is not and nor is the game play which is just absurdly difficult. I mean, over 21 stages and you could not even have like a learning curve at the beginning?
