- The tragic events that happened on September 11th 2001 affected everyone. For 17-year-old Tony Carter, he wanted to do something different with his life - he wanted to enlist. Despite his background coming from a broken home, he wanted to make a difference in the world.
- Seventeen-year-old Tony Carter got released from police precinct after getting into a fight. After being picked up by his best friend Drew, they return home as Tony apologizes to Drew for his juvenile mishap. Drews mother, Ms. Barrymore worries about Tonys future as she offers to hire a lawyer to contest the case so that it would not affect Tonys application for college. Drew hands Tony a CD player with a mixed CD as a gift to get through Tonys hardship.
The next day at school, Tony, Drew, Francis, Kelly and Annie decide to ditch class to go to Drews home. Francis turns on the television as the coverage of the twin towers are under attack. The group find themselves on the mountain as they reflect on national tragedy. Eight months later, the group of friends sitting on the bleachers chilling as they notice a recruiter on the field trying to recruit. Francis explains to the group that the recruiter is a professional salesman.
Drew, Tony and Francis gets home as Tony leaves to go run some errands. Francis gets a call to pick up some marijuana.
At the scene Francis meets with the dealer and notices Tony walking into Marine Corps recruiting station.
Tony meets the recruiter for the first time with questions about the service. The recruiter tells Tony cannot enlist because of his age and that he would need parental consent at the age of 17. The recruiter hands him a pamphlet to reconsider about enlisting.
Tony meets with his girlfriend Kelly that same night. Tony expresses to Kelly that he doesnt know what he wants to do in life. In return he hopes that Kelly would support Tony. Kelly fires back at Tony telling him that the norm is to attend college after high school. Tony enraged and tells Kelly she is spoiled. Tony leaves.
Tony gets home as the rest of his friends are smoking marijuana. Tony accidently drops the Marine pamphlet as Francis attempts to cover it from Drew. Drew assumes the pamphlet belongs to Francis as Drew makes a remark about idiots enlisting in the military. Tony leaves the house as Francis chases after him.
Francis confronts Tony about the military. Francis questions Tony about his life college and his girlfriend Kelly.
Tony gets home from court and tells Ms. Barrymore that the case was dismissed. Tony ask Ms. Barrymore for a favor.
The recruiter tells Tony that he scored extremely high on the ASVAB. However, he tells Tony that he still would need parental consent. Ms. Barrymore shows up and attempts to drag Tony out the office. Tony explains to Ms. Barrymore that he needs to make his own choice, his own life. Tony also reveals information about his past, in regards to his parents abandoning him and thanking the Barrymore family for fostering him.
Annie, Drew, Kelly and Francis meets up at Franciss home. Kelly wonders where Tony is. Kelly leaves the party to find Tony.
Kelly finds Tony sitting in the dark up in the mountains. She ask him if he still loves her. Tony tells her he still does and finally reveals that he has something to tell her.
Tony is home as Drew gets home. Drew tells Tony they all missed him and how much fun they had at prom. Tony tells Drew that he enlisted.
The next day Drew wakes up and finds a CD player and pamphlet on the table. Drew realizes the pamphlet belongs to Tony.
