A Path breaking movie all the way !! A cult classic in the years to come || Not for everyone
RebelRavindra26 July 2016
I don't think there's a film that really captured the vibe and the aura of any city in India like the way "The Angrez" did. This movie is the true essence of Hyderabad and it definitely appeals to anyone who's from Hyderabad or been in this city or even currently living and everybody will definitely relate to so many cultural references in the movie.

Everything worked so well with the film, Be it the characters, the whole premise, the dialogues, the narration, the situations and more importantly the comedic and humorous way the whole movie was dealt. it was absolutely brilliant. You will definitely find people in the city who metaphorically represent every character in the film.

The soul and the best part of the film is the writing. Nikhil Kuntaa should be seriously appreciated for bringing the core dialect of Hyderabad. Majority of Hyderabad speaks Hindi, but its not the Hindi that you'll get to listen in Delhi or Mumbai, it has got its own slang and words. Nikhil Kuntaa expertly dealt with the writing part. Instead of making cliche's, Nikhil injected right words at the right time and boy it resulted in brutally humorous situations.

The other thing that worked really well in the movie is the characters and the casting. You will definitely encounter guys like Saleem Pheku, Ismail Bhai, Jahangir and Kiraak all along the way in Hyderabad. The characterizations were ingenious and they were so relatable. Mast Ali, Aziz Nasser & Dheer Charan Srivastav have brought life to these characters and i don't think any other actor could've done a better job.

I can go on and on about how great "The Angrez" is.. This film is not for everyone and you have to be a part of the culture of Hyderabad in order to completely understand the characters and the cultural references used in the film.

The Angrez is a cult classic in its own way and is definitely path breaking. There is a whole new genre of movies now based on Hyderabad. I watched this movie like a Zillion times now, never got bored and i can recollect every single dialog from the movie.

A serious 10/10

Great comedy not great acting by the two angrez

Hilarious movie! Being a Pakistani American I would never come across this movie but fortunately had few Hyderabadi friends who introduced these Hyderabadi movies to me. The acting on the on the part of the locals is indeed fantastic. The "angrez" part (the English speaking actors) were just horrible. I mostly skip through those. But a ground breaking movie making. When Bollywood is trying to act like Hollywood and has lost its luster.

One of the greatest Comedy movie !

You don't need to be Hyderabadi to understand this humor. If you really like humor you will die laughing Ismail bhai , Salim and Jehangir characters. Even Ramesh and Mama makes extraordinary comic scenes ! Low budget but truly great comic movie of all time !

You don't need big stars when you have saleem , Jehangir and Ismail bhai!

Hyderabadi language it self is pure humorous language ! Enjoy it with patience !

There is 2nd part is also there that two funny as well.

But I loved more the first part.

You need patience to watch this movie , some scenes are lengthy but story line and all characters makes you feel you are on track !

The only people who might enjoy this movie are Hyderabadis

First off, this movie has some great parts, very few OK parts and a lot of abysmally bad parts. It is a low-budget movie, and it is quite poorly made. There were movies made on budgets lower than this that have more than double the IMDb rating. The characters in the movie are mostly one dimensional.

The good, the bad and the ugly -

Great parts: Most of the scenes with the Old city gang (Ismail Bhai, Saleem Pheku, Jehangir and the others). There is a sense of authenticity in their Hyderabadi Urdu and people who love that language will love those scenes. Some dialogues border on crass but do not cross that fine line, other dialogues and scenes are downright funny. Being from the city itself, the language is music to my ears. The comedy is slapstick.

OK parts: Some parts involving Yadav Anna and his gang, and their subsequent meetings with other characters.

Abysmally bad parts: Most of the scenes with just the main characters Pranai and Rochak. They actually have a story going, but I have never watched the whole movie till date without losing my patience and fast-forwarding through those bad parts every time. The acting is so bad that it can't even be called acting. I don't think any of the actors had any sort of training whatsoever. Some scenes are so awkward that it would have been better to delete those scenes entirely, and it wouldn't have taken anything away from the main story.

What this movie and its reception tells me, is that if I get a bunch of authentic Hyderabadi guys together and film them speaking to themselves normally, people (like me) will watch it.
