Period dramas have always been hot (repression so often is). Whether it’s Oliver Reed and Alan Bates nude wrestling in front of a roaring fire in “Women in Love” or Keira Knightley and James McCardle in the library with the green dress in “Atonement,” sex has always been there in period dramas. But something has happened in recent years in television: Shows set in ye olden times have gotten much, much hornier.
“Bridgerton” earned a lot of publicity for its frank sex scenes in Season 1, but it was hardly the first. There’s something about peeling back the bedclothes (and clothes) of a lost era that makes it resonate even more with modern audiences. If the stolen glances and hastily scrawled notes are foreplay, then we’re now living in a golden age of ruffled and furbelowed consummation.

Following its huge success with Red, White & Royal Blue, the adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s bestseller, which last year came in as one of its top three most-watched romantic comedies of all time, Amazon MGM Studios has greenlighted development on a sequel, with stars Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez set to return.
After making his feature debut with the first film, Matthew López has returned to write the script for the sequel — this time, alongside McQuiston. Berlanti Schechter Films’ Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter will return to produce the film, joined by the banner’s Michael McGrath, as well as López. McQuiston will executive produce.
Released last August, Red, White & Royal Blue follows Alex Claremont-Diaz (Perez), who upon his mother’s (Uma Thurman) election as President, is promptly cast as the American equivalent of a young royal. Handsome, charismatic, brilliant — his image is pure millennial-marketing gold for the White House.

History? They just made some.
A long anticipated sequel to the hit 2023 romantic comedy “Red, White & Royal Blue” is officially in development at Amazon MGM Studios, with stars Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez set to return. Matthew López, who co-wrote and directed the first film, is returning to write the screenplay with Casey McQuiston, who wrote the best selling novel of the same name. The cast and filmmakers made the announcement on Thursday following a special screening of the movie in Culver City, Calif.
The original film chronicles the how the First Son of the United States, Alex Claremont-Diaz (Perez), and Prince Henry (Galitzine), third in line to the British throne, navigate the classic trajectory of transforming from bitter enemies into passionate lovers, while having to keep their relationship from going public and becoming international media sensations. (Spoiler alert: It does.)

The biggest rising star of the moment, Nicholas Galitzine is everyone’s favorite, including his famous colleagues. Having recently starred in Starz’s unhinged historical drama show Mary & George alongside Julianne Moore, Galitzine never moved back to the shadows jumping straight to his other big release this year, Michael Showalter’s romcom The Idea of You with Anne Hathaway in the leading role.
While still promoting Prime Video’s new hit, the actor revealed he’d received a very peculiar gift from Hathaway after they struggled filming some specific scenes.
In his recent interview to British GQ, Galitzine said both he and Anne Hathaway had some trouble while filming their kissing scenes. According to the actor, they were so tense that their “intimacy coordinator would come in and give us a Listerine strip” so that both actors would feel more confident fresh mint breath.

The U.K.’s newest heartthrob, Nicholas Galitzine, has opened up on his sexuality and feeling conflicted over the roles that have shot him to – as of Monday – Met Gala levels of stardom.
The 29-year-old told British GQ that while he identifies as straight, taking on some roles within “queer stories” has left him with a sense of “perhaps guilt.” In the last few years, Galitzine has starred as Prince Henry in Amazon Prime’s gay romance Red, White & Royal Blue, as well as George Villiers in Sky Original’s queer period drama Mary & George.
“I think I have,” he said when asked if he has had to deal with people conflating him with his characters. “I identify as a straight man, but I have been a part of some incredible queer stories. I felt a sense of uncertainty sometimes about whether I’m taking up someone’s space,...

In the 1990s and 2000s, May (and specifically Memorial Day) typically marked the beginning of Summer Movie Season. Multiplexes nationwide were packed to the emergency exits with big names, big explosions and (presumably) big box office. The film industry has changed since then, obviously, and summer no longer packs the same high-octane punch that it once did. But in this evolution, release schedule space has opened up for a stellar month of Don’t-Miss Indies titles.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Mary & George Episode 4, “The Wolf & The Lamb.”] Tony Curran‘s King James gave his heart to George Villiers in Mary & George Episode 4… literally. The Scottish King of England brought Nicholas Galitzine‘s George to his homeland for the purpose of digging up the embalmed heart of his first great love, Lord Lennox, encased in an iron ring. Lennox and James had the same age difference as James and George, viewers learned in the Friday, April 26 episode. James learned a lot from his older lover, though everyone around him at the time feared that the love wasn’t real between them, that James was being used. But their concern wasn’t for James’ true wellbeing, rather for the sake of the monarch and how his wellbeing affects everybody else. James fears that no one can love him as deeply and truly as Lennox, but he pours his heart out to...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Mary & George Episode 4, “The Wolf & The Lamb.”] James and George’s romance reached the pinnacle of intimacy in Mary & George Episode 4. The episode saw James (Tony Curran) return to Scotland for the first time since he became King of England, his new lover, George (Nicholas Galitzine), in tow. While George can’t help himself from cheating, James is his most tender yet, and Curran delivers his best performance of the series in the episode. James is on edge throughout the episode’s first act. His irritation and unrest are on full display when he bites George’s arm, breaking the skin, and when he plunges himself into a river in Scotland. He’s imploding after the death of Somerset (Laurie Davidson), feeling as if he can’t trust anyone, especially George. And in truth, George is extremely untrustworthy. He’s loving and doting in the room with James, but...

Based on the combined predictions of over 2,000 Gold Derby users, Lily Gladstone (“Under the Bridge”) and Walton Goggins (“Fallout”) are not generally expected to reap 2024 Emmy bids at this time. However, their chances of soon reaching predicted nominee status greatly improved over the past week thanks to their new category placements. The limited series actress’ odds jumped from 100/1 to 66/1 after she migrated from lead to supporting, while the dramatic actor went from 62/1 to 37/1 by making the opposite move.
Gladstone’s “Under the Bridge” cast mate, Riley Keough, joined her in switching from lead to supporting but still retains her original 100/1 odds. The other two performers who rose above their previous 100/1 odds this week are lead actress Julianne Moore (“Mary & George”) and featured actor Mark Ruffalo (“All the Light We Cannot See”), both of whom hail from limited series.
At this point, the non-continuing series races are proving to be the most dynamic ones overall.

*A Few Things To Note Before Reading*

Wigs are hard to pull off well. There are all kinds of reasons to need them. A heightened fictional world or far-flung historical period might demand wildly different hair from contemporary fashions. Timing could be a factor, too, as the demands of the production schedule might not allow an actor to sit in a chair for hours between setups to change their hairstyles. Sometimes, as in Apple TV+’s new series “Franklin,” noticeable wigs are part of the drama itself and can denote different social statuses, tastes, and allegiances. It’s almost never quite as blatant as the blonde Targaryen wigs from the first season of “Game of Thrones,” but films and TV shows can get a lot of storytelling done through whether wigs stand out, blend in, or create a strikingly different visual tone from what’s around them.

It feels like Nicholas Galitzine is everywhere these days. He clearly has a knack for playing royals — he starred as Prince Henry in Prime Video’s Red, White & Royal Blue in 2023 and is now making waves with his portrayal of George Villiers in Starz’s steamy historical drama Mary & George. Coupled with high-profile projects like The Idea of You on the horizon, the 29-year-old actor is well on his way to becoming Hollywood’s next “it” boy.
But before Galitzine was starring opposite Anne Hathaway, he got his start the way many rising actors do: on Lifetime. One of his earliest projects was Lifetime’s 2017 horror movie The Watcher in the Woods, where he played Marcus, a teenage boy who lives on a farm in a small Welsh village.

George Villiers is applying his carnal knowledge gained in France to his lustful pursuit of King James I in Mary & George Episode 2. Nicholas Galitzine and Tony Curran flirt in French in the TV Insider clip above, and it’s done behind the king’s lover, the Earl of Somerset’s, back — literally. George is trekking through the English countryside on horseback with all the king’s men in the clip from the upcoming episode, airing Friday, April 12 at 9/8c on Starz. They’re hunting for game, but George is hunting for James’ attention. “Can you hunt as well as you dance?” James asks. “Not even close,” George replies in French. Impressed, the Scottish monarch says he tried to teach the romantic language to his lover, the Earl (Laurie Davidson), “but he’s much more stone than sponge.” “I’m all sponge, your majesty,” George replies, shamelessly flirting. James loves it.

In Mary & George, the newest co-production from Starz and Sky, there is more than one way to gain power, but everyone seems happiest to choose the hottest option.
Mary Villiers (Julianne Moore) is broke and has no way to support her family or provide good marriages for her children. With her first-born being an irredeemable dolt, she focuses on molding her second-born, the achingly beautiful George (Nicholas Galitzine), into the perfect gentleman for a unique partner: King James VI/I (Tony Curran.) The Scottish monarch has just taken over the English throne, leaving a scramble for control among his many hangers-on and wannabe advisors. He is also, as one bystander acidly notes, "a dead-eyed, horny-handed horror who surrounds himself with many deceitful well-hung beauties." What better way to secure the Villiers family fortune than through the King’s bed?...

You may recall that this January, Sir Elton John became the 19th person ever to win the coveted Egot by claiming his first Emmy. But what you may be less familiar with is the fact that Emma Stone can become just the 20th actress (and the 25th entertainer overall) to claim an Eggocc if she triumphs in the race for the Best Drama Actress prize at this year’s Emmy Awards for her performance in the Paramount+/Showtime series “The Curse.” Too, Robert Downey Jr. is poised to be only the sixth actor to claim an Eggocc should he take home the Emmy prize in September for Best Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor for his work in the HBO limited series “The Sympathizer.”
What is an Eggocc, you ask? Why, it’s Emmy, Golden Globe, Oscar and Critics Choice statuettes, of course. And as just alluded to, winning all four...

Mary & George is the newest historical drama series starring Nicholas Galitzine and Julianne Moore. Based on the Countess of Buckingham and her rise to power by making her son seduce the king, the series is a dark and daring look at history. While Moore is as always spectacular, Galitzine too shines as George Villers.

Yet filming for the miniseries was not as grand as it looked on screen. As wonderful as the period costumes look, they ended up being the biggest adversity for Galitzine, who describes his time on set as nothing short of a war.

Quick, think of an English king famous for having insatiable appetites, beef with the pope, and a romantic life so messy that hooking up with him was a shortcut to either limitless political power or the Tower of London. If you’re thinking of Henry VIII, he of six wives and the whole “divorced, beheaded, died” thing, come on. The Tudors don’t have a monopoly on bizarre, sexy royal drama. Frankly, they’ve had enough time in the spotlight.
Starz’s “Mary & George” finally shifts that spotlight to the Jacobean era — named for King James I of England and VI of Scotland, who became king when the Tudor line ended and who transformed the English court into what happens when the VIP section of a Scottish gay bar takes over the government. And that’s just the beginning of the story. Here’s what you need to know...

[This story contains spoilers from the series premiere of Mary & George.]
In 2018, while flicking through the LGBTQ+ section of a copy of Time Out magazine, television producer Liza Marshall found a listing for a lecture about the sexuality of James VI and I, who reigned as the king of Scotland from 1567 to 1625 and, following the death of Queen Elizabeth I, also became the first Stuart king of England from 1603 to 1625. Despite having studied history during college, Marshall was surprised to discover that James had three significant relationships with men in his lifetime — the last of which forms the basis of the new historical drama Mary & George, which premiered Friday on Starz.
“It’s fair to say, at the beginning of the process, nobody wanted to make this show. No one knows anything about the Jacobean era,” Marshall tells The Hollywood Reporter of the 22 years that James spent as the ruler of both England and Scotland. “We know about Elizabeth I,...

Nicholas Galitzine had a tough time filming Mary & George.
In the upcoming Starz limited series, Mary Villiers (Julianne Moore) encourages her son, George (Galitzine), to seduce King James I (Tony Curran) and become his “all-powerful lover.”
Galitzine ended up breaking his ankle in the dance and fighting scenes on the first day of the shoot.
“There were these heeled shoes that you see characters wearing a lot,” he explained. “These stately homes have very slippery floors. While filming the scene in the first episode where I run and tackle this serving boy, my ankle slipped [and twisted] a full 90 degrees inward. I fractured my ankle and had to continue doing stunts the next couple days and then was dancing on it.”
Despite the injury, he pushed through because filming had just begun. He wore riding boots so the splint on his ankle was covered.

Nicholas Galitzine bombed his “Dunkirk” audition.
The “Mary and George” actor recalled to Variety the time he messed up his tryout scene in front of Oscar-winning director Christopher Nolan while Nolan was casting the 2018 war film.
Galitzine said that while he “got very far” in the casting process, he botched the actual reading opposite Nolan.
“He starts reading the scene, [but] it’s not the scene that I prepared,” Galitzine said. “I’m just staring at him for what feels like an eternity. And I finally plucked up the courage to say, ‘I’m sorry, Christopher Nolan, you have the wrong scene or I’d just been royally screwed up by my team.'”
Perhaps needless to say, Galitzine was not cast in “Dunkirk” — he instead marked his breakout role with “Red, White, and Royal Blue.” The actor stars in upcoming romantic drama “The Idea of You” alongside Academy Award winner Anne Hathaway.

George Villiers is more than just a pretty face. Mary & George needed to cast someone with an “undeniably beautiful” mug, but also the skill to carry the show’s “biggest emotional change,” as creator D.C. Moore says George goes “to quite dark places by the end” of the ridiculously sexy eight-episode Starz drama. Nicholas Galitzine fit that bill. “I think you will say that Nick is undeniably beautiful,” Moore tells TV Insider of the star, 29. In Mary & George, Galitzine plays the real-life historical figure, who became one of the most influential men in British history alongside his mother, Mary Villiers, played here by the great Julianne Moore. Based on Benjamin Woolley’s non-fiction novel The King’s Assassin, Mary & George depicts the Villiers family’s rise from unfavorable beginnings to the peak of English power. Galitzine “brilliantly” depicts George’s transformation from the “younger, more inexperienced George,” according...

‘Fantastic Four’ is highly anticipated in the MCU, partly because it marks the team’s debut in the universe and partly because the previous movies didn’t fare well. The reboot was confirmed during Disney’s acquisition of Fox, but details were scarce until a few months ago.
