Weird, really weird
Rodrigo_Amaro30 May 2023
A film star of massive magnitude and long successful career as Tom Hanks is destined to have many documentaries made about him for times to come, during his lifetime and beyond. The low score this small project has doesn't come for the fact that no documentary should be made of Hanks because he's still alive and he has many things to do, or neither because biographies are only special when the subject is no longer alive. It gets a downer vote due to its awkward poor presentation that makes it seem that zero persons were involved with its making/editing, it all feels like a robot put everything together and sent it to the world to see.

It follows the usual television biographical specials showing basic information about Hanks family life and early days, then moves ahead to present his meteoric rise to fame, success, failure, awards and public recognition and other personal ventures. It's hard to go wrong with the facts and basically anyone can do it.

The doc consists of showing countless interviews with Hanks during promotion of his many films, actors and directors also appear being interviewed in a similar manner, and no testimonies from outsiders, film historians and others are shown as made for the project. It's all archive stuff, some are cool to watch, others are just boring.

Outside of those aspects, it's a highly problematic piece where you have an AI narrating the movie. I might be proven wrong if the actress in question comes along but that voice was lifeless through the whole thing, and I think I noticed some errors while she speaks names and words (HAL 9000 would never be doing those things, even he had some life in that soothing voice). Not just that, it feels this was also edited by an AI and cringe mistakes can be easily spotted - Tom Hanks' first wife images are not from hers, it's all Rita Wilson with a different hairstyle, just make a basic web search and you'll see it. Painfully jarring to see that, and another moment where the voice just says Tom and instead of Hanks appearing they showcase a pic of Tom Arnold. There are a couple of moments that stills are shown in a very displicent and careless manner. If this is the future of the world without the human element then I'm frightened about the possibilities.

This only shows the magnifiency of Hanks life and career on a superficial visible level, no profundity whatsoever. Only worths some view just to see his interviews over the years, all cool moments. A future project, better developed and with massive material will come, no doubt, but we'll have to wait a little longer.

A man of his charisma, persona and enthusiasm easily gets one made but until then his movies speak for him and his career. He deserves better. 4/10.

It really is as bad as everyone says it is.
thejdrage14 June 2023
I can't stop watching it - it's so bad.

The narrator drew me in with her "English" use of whilst, but with a flat standard American accent. It is British, given that when money is discussed, they use pounds, not dollars.

This is truly SO BAD!! WHILST (sorry) first wife, Samantha Lewes, was mentioned a few times, every photo that was said to be of Samantha was actually of current wife, Rita Wilson. That is a serious WTF.

I'm 15 minutes in and realized my face has been pinched up the entire time, it's SO BAD.

It's mostly watching a young Tom Hanks being interviewed - which is interesting to a degree. But there is SO much of it.

I don't usually do this but, DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME - unless you want to study how NOT to do a documentary.

Strangely bad documentary
dracopticon25 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Did Tom Hanks really say yes to this production?

I mean, 07.27 into the documentary, they talk about Tom's then girlfriend Samantha Lewes and he getting married, while simultanelously showing a picture of him and Rita Wilson..?

I really wonder, who made this bad documentary? And who gave it the go ahead? Can just about anyone make documentaries about celebrities and probably not even ask the person of interest and then get away with it?

No, I say: back to the drawing board, and the be sure to get the approval of the person of interest!

Stay away. If you like Tom Hanks this will only annoy you!

Oh my. Has anyone told Tom?
michaelmain-6288410 June 2023
This is a horrible attempt at documentary film making. It honestly reminded me of an educational film from my elementary school days...which were in the 1960s. The narrator or narrator bot is the only thing with a future and that's only because she is either a robot or an automaton wannabe who will thrive when the artificial intelligence overlords take over. Ya know, next year.

Honestly, I suspect this is a film done entirely by artificial intelligence and, for the record, as with much of life these days intelligence is lacking..along with decent writing, interesting facts or even meaningful movie clips.

It's just bad.

The badness cannot be understated
gabriel-65-2235373 June 2023
Unbelievably poorly produced. If it was a 15-year-old girl and she's doing the voice over and it was for a high school project and then I give her a pass.

Outside of that, whoever made this should stick to being a barista.

And now I must BS for several hundred more characters in order to post this review about this incredibly awkward and ridiculously juvenile attempt at making a documentary about Tom Hanks.

In other news, I just watched Forrest Gump for the 27th time and the moment when he asks if his son is smart still gets me. Still gets me real good after all these years. It's a crying out shame that movie only gets 70% fresh on rotten tomatoes.

Is This a Joke?
michabay588 June 2023
As I listen to the horribly stilted narrator, it's hard to hear and really understand what she's actually saying about Tom Hanks. The narrator is either a bot or an incredibly bad voice actor; possibly a relation of the producer?

At any rate, there is no reason for Prime to have picked this up and made it available for viewing on their streaming platform as its just so pedestrian. It could have been edited in someone's attic during a clean out of newly found VHS tapes. No, really! Tom Hanks deserves so much better than this even if it were an unauthorized program. What did Tom ever do to this filmmaker?

Terrible
Lister4326723 June 2023
This is obviously AI generated and narrated. It's full of errors (for example, a displaying a photo with his current wife while mentioning his previous marriage) and tacky, awkward transitions between stock images and archived interviews. Viewing it and listening to the artificial voiceover felt almost like being in some kind of dystopian, alternate reality. I highly doubt this was authorized by Tom Hanks, and he should demand that Prime removes it.

Even more disturbing is how Amazon tried to release this onto it's streaming service with no disclaimer about its AI origin, as though it wouldn't be detected. If this is the future of production, I'm out!

How can you screw up "Tom Hanks?"
gsfrancis-979609 June 2023
This is the worst documentary I've ever seen and it's about the best actor I've ever seen! The montages were horrible - images that didn't match the narration, mixed timeframes, even occasionally wrong actors' images being portrayed as Hanks. Several of the interviews were lame, inane and very amateurish. I would be surprised if Hanks saw this and approved its release - - maybe if it was a young student's project for college or even high school credit? There was a whole long and detailed inclusion of Hanks' first wife which most of us know nothing about, while interesting didn't warrant so much coverage. I endured this documentary only because of the source material. Tom Hanks is unignorably fascinating, but sloppy journalism and poor production values do not make up for this!

A terrible documentary for a wonderful actor
crewj-0559521 June 2023
Who narrated this - an AI robot? Horrible.

I couldn't get into this at all and I am a huge Tom Hanks fan. Terribly made.

This would've been better made if someone like Tim Allen narrated it. It was slow, sounded depressing and did no justice for an amazing actor.

We should stop trying to see AI as a tool of success and use real people instead. I would've loved to have sat and watched the entire presentation but there was no way that was going to happen.

Don't waste your time on this. It makes a great actor look horrible. I hope someone soon comes up with something to replace this terrible documentary.

Jake Hickman?
dbm-1703610 August 2023
Jake - you need a new career in Ai. Forget movie making and just focus on other uses. Doesn't Amazon look at these before adding to the platform? Does Tom Hanks know this exists? He would be laughing while expressing disgust. I hope Jake doesn't earn any money from this. Not because he shouldn't be allowed to make movies, but because he has bamboozled and misled viewers. Amazon Prime normally wouldn't allow this and they should be ashamed. Don't they watch these in advance? Jake didn't even take the time to match the audio with the visual. We learned about Tom's "battle" with diabetes and immediately switched to a new totally unrelated topic. 43 minutes of my life lost forever!!!!!!

Had so much potential...and yet...the script!
sarahmarlene18 June 2023
I don't know who wrote the script for this documentary but it was written bizarrely! I'd be interested to know how many times that poor narrator (Josie Ellis?) had to say the word "would." ... it felt like 3,862,945 times. "And even though Tom *would* go on to blah blah blah, he *would* end up blah blah blahing..." BRUTAL! I honestly started thinking this was originally written in another language and then perhaps google translated into English as a joke. It was as if the writer was trying to prove that they could write complex sentences. Tom Hanks should sue ...but he won't because he is so wonderful. This could've been a ten but fell drastically short due to the script. ... poor Josie.

AI infancy flaws on full display, masquerading as a documentary.
theimprimere-4172015 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
As many others have correctly pointed out, there is definitely an AI influence to this attempt at a documentary. Personally, I believe the whole of the production was done with AI.

The very first thing you'll notice is the bizarre narration. It is certainly not a natural human voice.

This is quickly followed by pictures not matching subjects. If you find yourself thinking that Hanks' first wife Samantha looks strikingly similar to Rita Wilson, it's because the only pictures they show are of Wilson. I suspect that the AI just used "Tom Hanks Wife" and naturally plugged in Rita for every mention.

I've read this piece gets much worse, but I couldn't bring myself to watch more than 15 minutes.

This is a MUST PASS!

Disturbingly bad
iwantapegasus17 June 2023
The main problem for me was the narration. The voice was robotic and very distracting. The voice sounds just like one used in those irritating social media reels/posts that use the robot voiceovers.

When a housemate walks by and asks; "What are you watching? It sounds like you are on hold for a business phone call!", it confirmed my initial reaction to the flat, robotic, cold and distracting audio.

I gave up and could not watch the whole film. Which was very disappointing, since Mr. Hanks certainly has lived a full, creative life and career and is worthy of a warm, well researched biography.

Don't bother!! Tom Hanks is a great actor. Forget this docugarbage!
ghzshg27 June 2023
Who ever put this together, knew nothing about Tom Hanks. The photo collage (stolen from the internet) didn't even match up to the narrative. The narrator was a cross of Alexa, Hey Google, and Siri. The film interviews looked like they were also stolen from a variety of individuals. Tom's first wife was Samatha Lewes, but over the documentary, not one correct picture of her. They kept using his current wife, Rita Wilson's picture for Samantha!! Tom Hanks is the epitome of the all around good guy. His talent never seems to fail what we expect of him. I hope he didn't sign off on this docu-garbage!!

Embarrassing error
sarahcatt11 June 2023
Aside from the unfortunate production, the first two stills of Tom's first wife, Samantha (including a wedding shot) are of his second and current wife, Rita Wilson. That's a terrible screwup for a documentarian. It casts doubt on the veracity of anything subsequent in the film. The only plus might be the interviews with Tom Hanks, at least I think it's him 🤣.

I expected a much better documentary about such an outstanding actor, like Tom Hanks. He is someone as versatile as Henry Fonda, but seems to be truly admirable in his personal life. I'm curious if this film had any participation from Hanks, himself. Doubtful. He's certainly a better director than the maker of this film.

My First Review BC It's SO BAD
karriedfwrealtorstx1 July 2023
I thought, cool! A true story & background of one of my faves - what in - the - WORLD?! No way Tom stamped approval on this disgrace. Wrong photos, an easy task, what else is false? Try Again & this time use a real narrator!

I stopped it about a forth of the way in, now trying out John Denver documentary, let's see if they can get this one right.... Tom, not EVERY movie you've done has been gold, but many good works.

I'm going to have to tell everyone considering watching this to RUN for the remote, take it from your wife, turn it to golf reruns, I promise it's a better choice for your Friday night.

WORST DOCUMENTARY EVER
kristyhuskey28 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I literally created this account to leave this review because this is by far the worst documentary I've ever seen. I only watched 10 minutes of it and had to turn it off because A. It is beyond horrible B. I'm am embarrassed FOR Tom hanks. Omg does he even know this documentary took place. For one, the narrator sounds like an A. I. like siri or Alexa or something. Second, the whole time they were talking about Tom's first wife Samantha they kept showing pictures of Rita Wilson. Who the hell allowed this to go through???!! I love Tom hanks and hopefully a REAL director comes out with a good one someday because this needs to be taken off the air immediately.

Such a disservice
What a horribly poor effort given for such an amazing actor. I made it 10 minutes before I stopped to read the reviews and confirm my assessment. Then I turned it off. This could have been a great story had the writers done more research and put more effort into accuracy. It the short time I watched, there were 2 pictures of Rita Wilson shown when the narrator was talking about his first wife. Also, the narrator went on about how painfully shy he was while in the interview he talked about how confident he was. A group of high school students could have created a better production than this debacle.

WHAT A RELIEF!
veggieburgerus8 July 2023
I am so grateful and relieved to read the first few reviews which express even worse reactions than mine! The contrast between the aggregate quality of Mr Hank's performances, with this abomination of a documentary....is startling. I did learn a bit about this brilliant & beloved actor, which was satisfying. Otherwise, watching this was painfully irritating, especially the voice of the narrator.

I suspect the interviews with Mr Hanks were poached from legitimate sources and did provide a smidge of insight into this talented performer and genuinely decent human being which reminds me just how much he has enriched my life.

Horribly Executed Dreck
michaelbuday-6501813 August 2023
There are no words to express how truly horrible this documentary is. How Amazon allowed this dreck on its platform is mind boggling. The AI narrator is abominable - but overall execution smacks of someone who has no clue how to craft a narrative. And ridiculously hilarious stock footage choices only make things worse.

A word of advice to the "director," stop making films - it's not your thing. Using Tom Hank's name to get a film on Amazon is bad enough, but execute so poorly makes it even worse.

Tom Hanks should get his lawyers to get this crap off all streaming services. What an embarrassment.

Painful to Watch
scurulla30 August 2023
Wow - what a disappointment. The interviews with Tom Hanks are fine but the writing is awkward and stilted. The narrator sounds like a computer voice you hear on Instagram.

The film clips and interviews are interesting. You do get a wide variety of snippets from different movies, though Tom's early career is given very short shrift. The producers drew on a wide variety of public interviews. The problem is that the connecting narration is distinctly unhuman. The fact that the writing is very cliche does not help matters. The text about the passing of Tom's first wife is especially cliche and awkward.

This has to be unauthorized. It feels cheaply produced. Very disappointing.

😐
fvncyb16 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This was poorly made, however, it did contain some interesting facts.

They kept putting a picture of Rita Wilson on the screen for Samantha his first wife which can be very misleading for people who don't know about Tom Hanks's past.

Another good thing about this documentary is how they included most of the movies that Tom Hanks stared in. It made me want to watch Philadelphia, saving private Ryan, sleepless in Seattle, and Greyhound. All of which are award winning films starring Tom Hanks.

Though however, there were a few parts that had nothing at all to do with this actor, also misleading information.

Overall I do not recommend this documentary, I only really wrote this much to get to the word limit😅.

Cringeworthy and awful
aroark3319 July 2023
The narration is what killed this for me almost immediately. The voice of the narrator sounds like something from a really bad bedtime story application. You either want to stab your own ears so you can't hear them or fall asleep. That, coupled with the horrible editing, the bad writing, and the copyright free music, made me mute it almost immediately.

I gave this three stars, because I could only get through about three minutes of the film. How do you mess something with so much potential up this badly? You have a great subject, what appears to be some decent clips (at least in the first three minutes), and researched material and you blow it! This documentary does make one understand the importance of a good writer, a good director, and a good editor. All of which were absent for this film.

Worst thing I've seen
arckfc18 July 2023
First time I've given a review because I need to save at least one person from watching this. It doesn't even deserve one star. When they show the wrong womans photo every time they talk about the wife, you know it's gonna be garbage. The computer narration stinks. They show clips and pictures that make no sense (they talk about Bonfire of the Vanities and start showing random photos of just Bruce Willis, they talk about Barack Obama giving Tom an award and then play a random clip of Barack talking about the war, not at all talking about Tom's award). I've put more effort into writing this review than they did making this doc.

Reminder of His Failed Turn
jojunno18 June 2023
Watching this horribly piece together documentary was truly a refresher. It reminds everyone of what a waste and what a turn Tom Hanks career has taken. Not just his career but his life in general. From his "humble beginning' it was clear his talent and wit were plentiful and impressive. His early works and his prime rolls were legendary. He truly was lining up as this generation's Jimmy Stewart. So, instead of taking that goodwill and fostering it he instead decides to shift into ultra liberal mode and expose himself as a divisive elitist. Siding against religion and common sense along the way. Something Jimmy Stewart or any of the old Hollywood guard would be disgusted by. He has tainted his legacy beyond repair and this haphazard poorly constructed documentary touches upon it.
