The country recorded its highest cinema admissions in four years.
China took $7.7bn (RMB54.9b) at the box office in 2023, representing an 83% year-on-year increase and the highest cinema admissions in four years, but still 14.5% behind pre-pandemic 2019.
Local audiences continued to show their unwavering support for local productions, which claimed all the top 10 slots in the annual chart. The biggest among them were two Chinese New Year releases, historical mystery Full River Red and sci-fi The Wandering Earth 2, which both surpassed the landmark RMB4bn ($562m) mark.

CAA China has teamed up with the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society to unveil a joint initiative that will foster Chinese-language genre film projects.
The Hgc initiative will operate an open call for projects from Monday until the end of October. Five successful projects will be selected and presented at next year’s FilMart rights market and Haf project matching event.
As part of the program, “CAA China will fund $20,000 cash awards to each of two handpicked projects to support their development, with customized guidance from mentors.” CAA China may also choose to board the winning projects later by entering into script development agreements.
“We are witnessing the rise of a new generation of Chinese filmmakers who are the backbone of Chinese cinema,” said Mary Gu, CEO of CAA China. “By collaborating with Hkiff Society, our aim is to discover and support young filmmakers with industry awareness and mainstream expression.

“Fast X” predictably won a second weekend on top of the mainland China box office, driving its total past the $100 million mark. But the disappointing start for Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid” was the bigger talking point.
“Fast X” earned $17.6 million in China according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway. That was a 66% drop compared with its opening weekend, but still gave the film a $110 million cumulative after 12 days and has caused estimates to be further revised upwards.
Ticketing agency Maoyan is now forecasting that the film will finish with RMB880 million ($126 million), having previously predicted RMB728 million ($104 million), and then RMB840 million.
That would make the film the top-scoring Hollywood title of the year (excluding 2022 release “Avatar: The Way of Water”). But the numbers are way down on past outings by the franchise.
To date, “Fast X” only ranks as the 49th best-performing Hollywood film in Chinese local currency terms.

Universal Pictures’ Fast X cruised to another easy win at China’s theatrical box office over the weekend, earning $17.6 million for a cumulative total of $109.9 million.
Disney’s The Little Mermaid, though, is clearly sinking rather than swimming in the China market. The Rob Marshall-directed film, starring Halle Bailey as Ariel, opened to just $2.5 million — on the far low end for Disney’s live-action remakes in China.
The Little Mermaid was outearned by a pair of holdovers and a new anime release. Local road comedy Godspeed, already a month in cinemas, added $6.8 million to a total that now sits at $145.4 million. Disney/Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 took $4.9 million for a $79.6 million cume. Japanese anime feature Sword Art Online the Movie opened to $3.8 million, with local ticketing app Maoyan forecasting it to top out in China with around $5 million.

Note: This story contains from the series finale of The CW’s “The Flash”
“The Flash” has officially crossed the finish line on The CW and with it, the Arrowverse has officially come to an end. So, how exactly did the show wrap up its nine seasons and an entire on-screen universe?
Well, the good news is pretty much everyone got their happy ending. But before we can get to the ending, let’s start at the beginning.
As promised, Tom Cavanaugh indeed returned for the series finale of “The Flash,” and pretty early too. Eobard Thawne was not the only major villain from Barry’s (Grant Gustin) past that returned though. Savitar made an appearance too, along with Karan Oberoi’s Godspeed and a few others.

China’s film market is recovering, now the country’s cinemas and borders are open, and more films are being released, but producers and investors are playing it safe with a limited range of movies, said speakers at Bridging The Dragon’s annual Cannes Marche panel.
In the first session, ‘Is China Back?’, Chinese director-producer Lu Chuan (City Of Life And Death) said: “We have lots of talented and brave young filmmakers who want to make films – the problem is how do we encourage them to make more different types of films, and not only focus on comedies and family dramas.”
One of the biggest trends at the China box office since cinemas reopened has been big-budget comedies, usually with top stars – films like the Detective Chinatown franchise and this year’s Godspeed, which grossed $136M (RMB959M) – have helped drive the country’s box office recovery. China’s box...

“Fast & Furious 10” (aka “Fast X”) dominated the mainland China box office with a strong opening weekend and a revved up opening five days.
Data from consultancy firm Artisan Gateway shows Fast X scored $51.1 million between Friday and Sunday, to comfortably top the Chinese box office, with a 58% market share.
Unusually, the film opened on a Wednesday. Over five days, it accumulated $77.4 million.
Imax reported that the film pulled in $8.4 million from China, accounting for 11 of the China market opening, from fewer than 1% of the screens in the market. The figures reflect the five-day score, not the conventional weekend.
The drive-away win was the biggest opening for a non-Chinese film this year, the biggest non-holiday opening in China by a film of any nationality, this year and was within a whisker of the opening weekend score by “Avatar 2” in December.
Those numbers will offer encouragement to Hollywood studios,...
