[Warning: Spoilers ahead for “Triangle of Sadness”]
Dolly de Leon doesn’t get very far in Cannes without being stopped in the street by enthusiastic fans. The scene-stealing Filipina actor stars in Ruben Östlund’s festival sensation “Triangle of Sadness,” where her every line has so far prompted cheers in press and public screenings alike.
De Leon plays Abigail, a toilet manager on a chaotic cruise ship who gets her own back on her bosses and guests when, well, shit hits the fan. Her story is just one part of Östlund’s searing commentary on privilege, greed and power — but Abigail’s power play, exquisitely brought to life by de Leon’s deadpan delivery, is what audiences will remember.
The overnight success at the world’s foremost film festival, where Neon acquired the movie, is all very new to de Leon, who is still a gigging actor back home in Manila, the capital of the Philippines.

The Filipino thriller master Erik Matti is in Venice with “On The Job: The Missing 8”, the sequel to his action flick “On The Job” from Cannes Directors’ Fortnight in 2013. As for the previous film, the script was penned by Matti’s spouse Michiko Yamamoto, whose feeling for fine tuning and presenting many things happening at the same time leaves no confusion about who- and whydunnit, although the backside challenging 208′ of the film’s runtime will probably prove more fitting for the broader audience in the format in which is shown now – as a six episode HBO Asia mini-series.

Apart from being a brilliant filmmaker, Erik Matti has proven time and again that he is also a great businessman, and coming up with the sequel of his most famous work, “On the Job”, eight years after the original was released, just proves both facts in the most eloquent fashion. “The Missing 8”, as the sequel is titled, premiered to high acclaim at the 78th Venice International Festival as part of the main competition, eventually netting the Volpi Cup for Best Actor for John Arcilla. Furthermore, and in another rather smart idea, the film is now screening in HBO Asia as a six episode mini series, with the first two episodes essentially being the first movie (re-edited and remastered) split into two parts, and the connection between the old and the new being the general concept of the prison murderers-for-hire and a number of individuals that appear in both.

“Gensan Punch,” the upcoming film by celebrated Filipino director Brillante Mendoza, has been set as an HBO Asia Original movie. It will become available on regional streaming service HBO Go in the next few months.
Ahead of that, the film will have its world premiere next month at the Busan International Film Festival, and follow that with an out-of-competition gala selection at November’s Tokyo International Film Festival. In Busan, it appears in the Window on Asian Cinema” section and is also one of seven Asian films nominated for the festival’s Kim Jiseok Award.
The Japan and Philippines coproduction film is a fact-based story about a Japanese man with a prosthetic leg who seeks to become a professional boxer. He did his training in the so-called Gensan Quarter of General Santos City, which has long been known for producing athletes, including former champion boxer and current presidential candidate Manny Pacquiao.

When Erik Matti’s “On the Job” premiered in 2013, it shortly became an important title for many of the Filipinos. With the image of the corrupted landscape of Manila captured in a gritty, dark lens of noir-like thriller; with cops being paid off, prisoners used as hired guns, and politicians as gangsters, the film encapsulated the energy of the real events on which it was loosely based on. Once again, Manila became a violent and hostile place, a depiction that Filipino filmmakers lean towards with an obvious motivation in mind. The blood is there and it deserves representation.
Several years later, Matti comes back with the informal sequel to his story. Premiered in the 78th Venice Competition as a sole representative of Asian Cinema, his “On the Job: Missing 8” became a 208 minutes-long take on the current state of corruption, journalism and politics in the Philippines. This time around, it is set not in Manila,...

Scrappy filmmaking can sometimes deliver superb storytelling, as is proven by Erik Matti’s initially wobbly but increasingly gripping, increasingly thoughtful, increasingly increasing three-and-a-half-hour “On the Job: The Missing 8,” the prolific Filipino director’s Venice-competing sequel to the 2013 Cannes Directors’ Fortnight title “On the Job.” While the film unfolds more like the TV show it’s about to become, that’s hardly a diss these days. And in its current shape — due largely to screenwriter Michiko Yamamoto’s uncanny ability to keep multiple narrative balls in the air at once — it combines the immersive, occasionally spectacular pleasures of genre cinema with the greedy moreishness of longform TV models. It’s a sprawling, satisfying big-screen binge.
It also plays somewhat like a 209-minute dolly zoom: As the aperture widens on the intensely corrupt landscape of a society under strongman leadership, the focus also narrows onto one man’s painful ethical reawakening.

Cinema genre specialist Erik Matti and his screenwriter spouse, Michiko Yamamoto, return to the world of 2013’s On the Job with this ambitious three-hour-and-twenty-eight-minute sequel, which will soon be re-edited, along with its predecessor, into a six-episode limited miniseries for HBO Asia. Even at near-Irishman length, it works pretty darn well as a feature, widening the cops-‘n’-crooks scope of the Manila-set first film to focus on the role of journalism in holding politicians to account.

Director Erik Matti takes a closer look at the gritty reality of the Philippines in “On the Job: The Missing 8.” Inspired by true events and presented in Venice’s main competition, it shows a corrupt journalist seeking justice for his missing colleagues, as well as crime syndicates that temporarily release prison inmates to carry out political assassinations.
Originally intended for the big screen, this film and Matti’s 2013 thriller “On the Job” – shown at Cannes Directors’ Fortnight – have been reworked as a six-part HBO Asia Original series, which bows on Sept. 12 on HBO Go in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

The journey from franchise to a competition slot at the Venice Film Festival to HBO series was the subject of Thursday’s Venice Production Bridge conference, “From the Philippines to the World: The ‘On the Job’ Franchise and Exploring New Ways of Global Content Distribution.”
In good spirits in a market cocktail that followed on Thursday evening, Erik Matti, the director of “On the Job: The Missing 8,” as his new film is called, told Variety how he got to keep his film at three hours and 28 minutes, and show it at the festival, as well as divide this film, and his previous one, “On the Job,” into one six-part series for HBO.
The series premieres on HBO in Asia on Sunday, two days after the film is shown in Venice. A half dozen festival engagements follow for the film version, he said, with announcements due shortly.

Erik Matti is one of the Philippines’ most celebrated filmmakers, working across genres. “On The Job” bowed at Cannes Directors’ Fortnight in 2013, where it was nominated for the Sacd Prize, and went on to global and domestic acclaim.
The film was inspired by a real-life scandal in which prison inmates were temporarily released from prison to work as contract killers on behalf of politicians and high ranking military officials.
Matti returns to the subject, which he has expanded as a franchise, in “On The Job: The Missing 8,” which is playing in competition at the Venice Film Festival. Again inspired by true events, the film follows a corrupt journalist seeking justice for his colleagues, and a convict who is frequently brought out of prison to perform assassinations.
The difference this time is that the franchise expansion is as a series for HBO, with the events of the 2013 film treated as the first two episodes.

Drafthouse Films is stepping back into the world of distribution after a five-year hiatus with the North American co-release of India’s Oscar entry, “Jallikattu.”

Growing up, I was a picky eater. I wasn’t so bad that I would only eat one bland dish, but my parents struggled to get me to try new foods. Eventually, the influence of television, particularly cooking and travel programs, urged me to broaden my horizons and expand my palate. If it weren’t for shows like A Cook’s Tour, I’d likely be stuck with a menu of Pb&j, chicken nuggets, and buttered noodles for an eternity.
People getting stuck in a cycle of comfort food doesn’t just happen at the table. Since the advent of cable, the TV equivalent of comfort food, reruns of Law and Order, Seinfeld, and the like, suck in viewers who’d rather have something predictable and familiar. Traditional television viewers weaned on “57 channels and nothing on” can be forgiven for surrendering to the easy comfort of syndicated programming, but...

The newest horror movie by Philippino director Erik Matti (“BuyBust” 2018) deals with a whole bunch of different topics. The story is pretty simple though.
“The Entity” is now screening at /slash film festival
Luis (Kent Gonzales) left home to study at an engineering school. One day he receives a call from his parents. His sister has died, and he should return for the funeral. Back home, Luis tries to uncover the circumstances of her death, but no one is willing to give an answer. Right from the start, the viewer is introduced to supernatural elements. A demonic haunted house and a dark past that holds a tragic family fate are the ingredients that make up the typical horror stylistics of this movie.

When it comes to high quality genre fare out of South East Asia, Filipino director Erik Matti continues to lead the way. With a Cannes selection under his belt for hitman thriller On the Job, Matti has long been a favorite on the festival circuit and the prolific director seems to keep things fresh by continually shifting between genres and styles. Last year, for example, Matti tried his hand at full on martial arts action for the first time with Buy Bust. And now? Now he's released the trailer for full on horror title Kuwaresma. And while Matti's no stranger to horror this one looks to be notably darker than previous work. And you will find no complaints about that here. Filipino star Sharon Cuneta...

Erik Matti is one of Asia’s most ambitious filmmakers. An assistant director to Peque Gallaga, he made his debut with Scorpio Nights 2 (1999), a sequel to his mentor’s erotic classic. He has made subversive horrors, world-building fantasy epics, gritty crime dramas and costumed superhero films. While always audience-focused, Matti and his films are becoming more political; they have recently focused on systemic corruption and religious hypocrisy in the Philippines. BuyBust is his headiest achievement yet, spinning high-octane action tropes into a scathing commentary on the ongoing drug war.

Director and co-writer Erik Matti has delivered an explosive exercise in kinetic cinema that also offers potent commentary on the devastating social consequences of the Philippine government’s war on drugs. Following its world premiere at New York Asian Film Festival, “BuyBust” will become a must-see item for genre fans. It looks certain to spark controversy and attract large audiences when it releases locally Aug. 1, and should enjoy a successful run in selected North American cities from Aug. 10. Worldwide Netflix rollout is set for Nov. 1.
“BuyBust” barely digs into the background of any characters and doesn’t need to. All we need to know is that Drug Enforcement Agency recruit Nina Manigan (Anne Curtis) is the sole survivor of a team that...

Erik Matti is one of the most recognizable and most crucial figures of the Filipino film industry, with films like “On the Job”, “Honor Thy Father” and “The Aswang Chronicles” among others, along with his work on production. “BuyBust” is a film that comes to establish his prowess on creating genre films through a humongous production that included 309 stuntmen and 1,278 extras, and relentless action.
“BuyBust” screened at the 17th New York Asian Film Festival
Nina Manigan is the new recruit of an elite anti-narcotic squad. However, she is definitely not a rookie, since a few months back, she was a member of another team which was completely eradicated after their leader gave them the wrong orders. This time, Nina and a group of the best men and women of the squad have to accomplish a buybust, with the help of a captured “asset”, Teban, who used to be a member...

Although known for his flashier action-thrillers such as On The Job and The Aswang Chronicles, Filipino director Erik Matti is no stranger to the insufferably atmospheric. In his deft hands, Nine-Day Novena (Pa-Siyam) proved to be an unflinching ghost story about a dysfunctional family reunited by the recent passing of their mother. Following his grim crime drama Honor Thy Father, Matti returns with Seclusion (Seklusyon), a period thriller following a ritual which sets deacons out into a "holy fortress" to ward them off of temptation seven days before their priesthood. The film is set in the late 40's, the last instance of the said ritual. It recalls to mind a horror short film Matti directed in 2012 called Vesuvius, in which a young man sees demons hiding behind the disguise...

We've been keeping tabs on On The Job and Honor Thy Father director Erik Matti's upcoming action thriller Buy Bust for a little while now but while prepping that film the director has very quietly - so quietly it's not even listed on the IMDb at this point - been putting the final buff and polish on his new horror film Seclusion. Details are limited at this point but we do know that the story revolves around the tradition of young men preparing for the priesthood being sent off on silent retreat for the final few days before ordination as this is when they will be under most direct attack by evil forces. Ronnie Alonte stars and with the film now very deep in post...

Erik Matti (Tiktik: The Aswang Chronicles, Rigodon), the maestro Filipino director, really knocked it out the park with his 2013 hired-assassin thriller On the Job. Not one to rest on his laurels, his latest crime flick, Honor Thy Father (not-related to The Godfather spin off) has also been garnering much praise among critics.
But Matti is nothing if not versatile, and as such has now decided to turn his attention towards the martial arts genre with the upcoming film, Buy Bust. Although still just in pre-production, it has already been announced that the film will feature American-Filipino mixed-martial arts Ufc star Brandon Vera (Kamandag), and Filipino-Australian female actor, Anne Curtis (Blood Ransom, The Gifted).
Information regarding the film’s plot remains sparse, but if we were to hazard a guess we would expect gangsters, drug-lords and of course ball-busting police officers, all no doubt served up with a heavy dose of...

Filipino director Erik Matti has been on quite a roll in the past few years with his gritty thrillers On The Job and Honor Thy Father premiering in Cannes and Toronto, respectively, while his Aswang Chronicles films broke new ground for VFX work in his native country while delivering crowd pleasing entertainment. And it looks as though that roll isn't going to end any time soon with Matti currently in prep on what could easily prove to be his biggest international film to date. Though proper rehearsals are not scheduled to start until next next month with photography not scheduled until November, the principal cast of Matti's upcoming Filipino martial arts oriented action film Buy Bust have already been training in the pekiti-tirsia kali combat...

On UnREAL Season 2 Episode 7, Rachel's actions finally had huge consequences and it resulted in her being put in hospital.
Let's talk about Rachel's reunion with Adam. It was a complete and utter dud. Adam seemed to think he could waltz back into her life and have her back in a New York minute, but people change.

Rachel isn't in the same mind frame as she was last year. She's moved on. She's also a considerably more unstable. All season long, we've witnessed her downfall and everything really came to a head for her.

Who knew Prince William could make balloon puppets? On the job as an air ambulance pilot recently, William blew up a surgical glove to create a "puppet" for 3-year-old Luke Sawyer, who was having an allergic reaction. William was called to the scene after Luke - who is only a few months older than William's son Prince George - suffered the reaction at St. Joseph's Catholic Primary school about 40 miles north of London. While doctors worked to help Luke, he was given the inflated surgical glove from pilot William, who had tied two of its fingers as ears and used...

Stone Cold Steve Austin is the most celebrated WWE wrestler of all time. He was the ultimate all-rounder, being fantastic on the mic and proficient in the ring. But what really set him ahead of his peers was his ability to get fans to part with their money. His merchandise sold like crazy, particularly his range of t-shirts. As for arena attendances and pay per view buys, the Austin name was generating record business for Vince McMahon. Arenas were full and Austin was the draw, everyone else in the WWF was just going along for the ride.
But power corrupts. The success Austin experienced ended up turning him into one of the biggest egotists of the Attitude Era. Maybe it was because he came up in a time when Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels ruled the roost, making it look as if backstage politics was the only way to keep ahead in WWE.

2013 was the year when Erik Matti released On the Job, showing the world that there was more to the Philippines than the suffering and dolor most of its films so valiantly depict. It was also the year when filmmakers Siege Ledesma (Shift), Jerrold Tarog (Sana Dati), and Whammy Alcazaren (Islands) broke away from the usual mold to tackles various facets of love that would be too complicated for commercial cinema. Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan (Norte, the End of History), 2013's best film, even had Lav Diaz breaching his trademark aesthetics of monochromatic long takes to deliver a narrative that is comparatively easier to digest but still powerful like no other.2014 saw Cinemalaya and Cinema One Originals, the Philippines' most reliable fund granters, actively seek out...
