Star Wars Day Fun From the Simpsons!!
mjpiro4 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Maggie Simpson in Rogue Not Quite One is the Simpsons attempt to celebrate the holiday that seems to be growing more popular year by year and that holiday of course is Star Wars Day!!!!! Officially founded in the late 1970's and having something to do with British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher Star Wars Day has boomed in popularity over the past decade because of the internet and the re-injection of movies back into mainstream society. With that said it leads us to this cute film directed nicely by David Silverman, an approximately 4 minute short starring the youngest Simpson Maggie who travels the Star Wars Universe seeing other Star Wars baby versions of real Star Wars characters such as baby Darth Maul and other Simpson-ized versions of Star Wars characters such as the Mandalorian who is pretty spot on!! Joining Maggie in the short - or better yet I should say worrying about her like the Mandalorian sometimes worries about his small charge Grogu (Baby Yoda) is Homer Simpson, Maggie's Dad who first busts his way into a cantina for a blue milk early in the short. Afterwards Homer & the Mandalorian hot sweat it out until Homer is re-united with his dear daughter. This was a precious cartoon and while the demographic is aimed at young children with Maggie being the star there are clearly enough adult characters in the short for it to be enjoyed by adults. The cartooning was great, as was the storytelling. The sound effects were great as was the soundtrack. I hope that the Simpsons and Disney+ make this a yearly routine on Star Wars Day!! 6 out of 10 stars!!

Mailed-In Garbage

Somehow it was difficult to finish a four minute Simpsons-Star Wars crossover short, but that's exactly the case here. I got near the end but didn't bother much more because there was such an over-abundance of plot armor (even for a Simpsons parody) with too few quality jokes to keep me. While I cracked a small smile at a few of the jokes, the plot was lame. I usually give the benefit of the doubt for four-minute parodies, but this was so over the place it tried to do so much in so little. I'm really not asking for much from a four minute parody, I'm aware it's not supposed to be some majestic tear-jerker, but it felt so lazy and half-done. They got one line from Chief Wiggum and it felt like worse quality than the when he first appeared thirty years ago, and they couldn't even get some of those classic grunts or "d'oh"'s from Castellaneta. Don't they know the funniest part of Homer's physical comedy is Castellaneta? I guess not. I suppose it takes a special kind of talent to make someone spend more time reviewing garbage than they did to watch it...

I found the new short film funny (much better than the previous ones) and to see little baby Maggie Simpson with Grogu facing off against a squadron of TIE fighters while leading the battle in Springfield is a great homage to Star Wars, and This new animated short joins the growing list of "Simpsons" shorts that have been released on special occasions, including 'Playdate with Destiny'.

About the Synopsis It's acceptable: On their way to daycare, Homer loses track of Maggie who hops in Grogu's hovering pram for a hyperspace-hopping adventure across the galaxy. Facing a squadron of Imperial TIE fighters, Maggie brings the battle to Springfield in this epic short celebrating all things Star Wars.

That's my opinion.
