Netflix has dropped the trailer for upcoming Indian series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, showcasing the private exchanges of courtesans amid sweeping scenes of revolution in British-ruled India.
Marked as a tentpole for the streamer on its India content slate and set to premiere on May 1, Heeramandi tells the story of Mallikajaan (played by Manisha Koirala) ruling over an elite house of courtesans, while the country’s independence movement picks up steam.
“We’ve given up our pursuit of respectability and love has long deserted us. The only thing left to fight for is this struggle for freedom,” one courtesan says.
Heeramandi is the first long-format series from director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and stars Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari and Richa Chadha. The series’ trailer highlights extensive sets, rich music scores as well as elaborate costumes.

The Ott platforms are getting hyperactive: Jio and Disney+Hotstar have become a single entity, Netflix has announced 22 new projects, all with top filmmakers and Amazon Prime has set March 19 as the date for launching what it calls The Next Chapter of the India Story!
The Ott platforms arrived in the country in 2016 but the awareness about them took some time to build up. People were happy with their films and television serials. The Ott platforms did not come for free. Their subscription rates were much higher than the local cable or satellite Set Top Box (Stb) rates.
Besides, all these platforms initially offered mainly international content to our viewers, who had been fed on Hindi content, be it films or TV. The audience for Hollywood films in India was limited mainly to a few metros. And all those who watched Hollywood films were familiar with the stars and had their favourites.

Leading Indian studio Yash Raj Films (Yrf) has had a phenomenal 2023 with successes across theatrical films and streaming and is looking to build on it going forward.
After an indifferent 2022 where the Hindi-language Bollywood film industry was shaded by the mighty south Indian business, the box office roared back in January 2023 with Yrf’s “Pathaan,” starring Shah Rukh Khan. The success of “Pathaan” began a stellar box office year for Bollywood and the film was surpassed only by “Jawan,” also starring Khan and distributed internationally by Yrf.
