Not good at all
ksgillihan13 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This is not a good movie. I reviewed this already but for whatever reason, it got deleted. First of all, you need to understand that the high score reviews are from hilariously obvious people who know someone who worked on this movie or were paid to do so. Maybe both. This is both sad and pathetic and very, very dishonest. Besides the fact that it spits in the face of other indie films. People who legitimately make good films. This is not one of those good films.

The premise of this movie is already not great. A woman who suffers a tragedy goes to take care of an old house for whatever reason. Guess what? The house is haunted! Well, maybe. We never really are told for sure. So she spends her time sitting and looking out the window and having endless flashbacks to her boyfriend. Seriously, so many flashbacks. Her phone also rings randomly and makes weird creepy noises when it rings. So I guess ghosts know how to make phone calls and also change the preferences on your phone so that the creepy sound is a notification for when it calls. Awesome.

Soon we learn that another person hung himself after his girlfriend got killed by him while he was possessed or something? I don't even know. The only good thing in this movie is the guy who plays Chris. He's funny and actually a decent actor. The rest is just bad. The girl "fights" a demon or ghost or Pokémon that looks like her and learns to drive a car again and saves Chris from her evil twin. Seriously, this movie is just bad.

Horrible

Warning: Spoilers
This movie was SOOOOO BAD that it required the extra "o's". A woman has ptsd from the death of her husband and does the usual "I'm going to go someplace isolated for no good reason". And house sits for a creepy owner played by Malcolm McDowell (we never see him, only hear him in a couple phone calls and even his voice acting is awful). Apparently something that is NEVER explained is doing some sort of haunting type thing, and shows things through the camera of her phone at random times. Now enters the random stranger who we don't know if we should trust or not. They tried to make it seem like he had autism I think. The acting was TERRIBLE. I watched it in 3 separate chunks because I couldn't make it through in one sitting that is how bad it was.

SO BAD
heyhay-3574015 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Acting was embarrassingly bad. The movie seemed very confused as to what it wanted to be about.

I think it was a pointless movie which was a confusing abysmal mess.

A woman goes to presumably house sit after her husband dies. Malcolm McDowell is the obligatory creepy owner who hired her on the phone. It's awful how even though you don't see him, Malcolm McDowell is JUST as horrible with voice acting. Somehow she sees weird things through her phone at random times that she either writes off as ptsd or just doesn't acknowledge. Oh yeah, there is some guy who randomly shows up who the writers obviously tried to write as someone who is on the autism spectrum, stereotypically.

I would be embarrassed to be part of this film.

Simply not worth the time of day...
paul_haakonsen12 March 2024
Stumbling upon this 2024 movie titled "Cellphone" by random luck, I opted to sit down and watch it on account of it being a movie that I had never seen, nor actually heard about. And with it being a horror movie of sorts, of course I needed no persuasion to sit down and check out what director Luke Sommer and writer Rachel Sommer had to offer.

The storyline was somewhat of a swing and a miss. THere wasn't a whole lot of anything interesting happening, and sitting around watching the lives of Wynne (played by Whitney Rose Pynn) and Chris (played by Justin Malik Jackson) just didn't really make for an overly interesting narrative.

It was a relatively small cast ensemble in the movie, and I was only familiar with Malcolm McDowell. The acting performances in the movie were actually fair, despite the fact that the script was a dumpster fire.

I managed to suffer through a gutwretching 45 minutes of absolute boredom before I tossed the towel in the ring. This movie took forever to go nowhere. I am not kidding here, nothing happened in those long, oh so very long, 45 minutes that I suffered through. And believe you me, I am never returning to attempt finish watching "Cellphone".

This movie was a swing and a miss. And there wasn't an ounce of horror in it to be seen throughout the 45 minutes I endured. Well, unless you consider absolutely nothing happening on the screen as horror, if so, then you're in for quite a treat.

My rating of director Luke Sommer's 2024 movie "Cellphone" lands on a one out of ten stars.

A Slow, Confusing, and Disappointing Experience
Movie_Freak_201926 February 2024
This movie was incredibly slow-paced, to the point where I found myself nodding off and had to stand up to keep myself awake. It's surprising that it's labeled as Horror-Mystery because there was hardly anything scary or mysterious about it; instead, it felt more like a drama-documentary. The plot was uninteresting and didn't make much sense, and the ending was confusing, leaving me feeling like I wasted a good 90 minutes of my time. This is by far the worst movie I've ever seen. The acting was subpar, and the only emotion I felt while watching it was shame-for witnessing such a poorly made film and for the time I'll never get back. The secondary characters were so poorly written that they're not even worth mentioning. Overall, this movie was a complete waste of resources, time, and, well, just a waste. I strongly advise against watching it.

What a piece of disposable material
sonyalex-3599024 February 2024
This is the worst movie (if you can call it movie) I have ever witnessed. Stay away at all cost.

The acting is nowhere to be seen. The only thing I felt watching this thing was shame. Shame for witnessing it. Shame because i will never reclaim the time I spend watching this thing.

The script is so bad it feels AI generated, but from a very alpha version of AI. The secondary characters were so offensive that I wont even bother to mention them.

Insufferable amalgamation of bad in so many dimensions. I was searching for ANY remdeeming quality in this film, but failed misserbly.

What a waste of resources, time and, well... What a waste. Run.

Astonishingly bad given this day and age.
davemcdo24 April 2024
It amazes me that some movies get past script approval, Cellphone sadly is another such example.

It's not as if this story hasn't been told many times before, it has, and in many better ways but this boring, repetitive and unfortunately poorly acted waste of time needs avoiding at all costs.

I can't be bothered with explaining the story because it's so puerile it's not worth the effort.

My only hope is that my review might stop one unfortunately cinema goer or indeed anyone from wasting their time and money on this insult to cinema, don't even be tempted, I have wasted my time and money for you and you're most welcome, just trust me.

Remember when you were choosing which movie to go and watch and it was between Cellphone and "A N other" movie - choose the other one, wish I had.

Disturbingly bad
Coldplayer1120 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
What a horrible piece of trash. Acting is bad, storytelling is bad, plot is bad. It isn't scary, not even a thriller. It's not even worth to be called a movie. Life's lessons all over the place, just throwing in life lessons, trying to make the movie deep and poetic. Scenes are badly shot, actors can't act.

That's one of the worst movies I've seen, it's disturbingly bad, it lacks creativity and the narrative is weak. I don't understand if this was supposed to be scary.

It's also called cellphone but we barely see the cellphone the whole movie so cellphone is not the main idea of the movie, maybe fear would have been a better title.

The only fear we have to it is fear itself...!!!
PANDIAN12062123 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The Sommer's team nailed it perhaps one of the few psychological thriller that stands tall & indeed a underdog that made me surprisingly traumatic for its frightening elements...

Thanks to writer Rachel Sommer's writing and her dialogue plunges directly into ur heart and gives a soothing effect with he help of editor Flanders Hanon...

To be more detailed actually the characters are just introduced with just their names & dialogues in most of the frames...for instance

BOB

"Legend has it"

"Death is hard"

"Sometimes life just throws you a curveball"

EMILY

"Don't believe everything you see"

Or identifying PTSD for which Wynne is undergoing...

CHRIS

The tree theory

"Storms gonna pass"

ROOSEVELT

"The only fear we have to it is fear itself"

"Fear lives in the future, what we're afraid of it is not in the past"...And many more

Director Luke manages to create an oppressive atmosphere with pretty good jump scares & indeed a noble attempt being more than a formulaic horror movie...

Justin Jackson makes this whole movie.
angel-675674 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
First of all, this is NOT a horror movie. It's like this weird blend between the Notebook and a Twilight Zone episode. It reminds me of eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, but funnier. The lead female role is well done and she did well, but for some reason gives me odd Kristen Bell vibes and idk why, but Justin Jackson stole the show. He's amazing. Why aren't we seeing him in tons of other movies and shows? I would have watched a whole series based on this character if Justin Jackson was cast in the role!! All in all it was a good movie, not great but not at all bad. There were some major plot points that got lost like what the heck was up with Bob? He was clearly watching her but that never got resolved. What happened to Betty? We never saw her. Was Chris even a real person or just what she needed to push her to heal and grow? What happened to the people who weren't murdered and needed to be fixed and corrected? Why was a cell phone involved at all? There are certainly a lot of loose ends but I would have been perfectly happy listening to Justin Jackson perform this character for another couple hours without complaints! Worth watching just for his performance if nothing else.

A Cinematic Triumph
SaraGHoffman22 February 2024
From the very first shot, I started to think this film was going to be different. Once we're introduced to Wynne a few minutes later, it definitely started to move me away from the typical jump scare film I thought I was in for. I don't want to give anything away, but this film really stuck with me afterward. Emotionally it resonated with my own struggles and things that I imagine a lot of us face. Namely, fear of the future. The characters and writing in this film are wonderful. They really created an interesting world. The phone is actually a much smaller part of the film than I thought it would be. But it does play an important role for sure. The whole mood of the film is a cool mix of somber and hopeful. There's truly a warmth to this film, it's really hard to describe. Bottom line: If you're looking for something different in a horror film or in films in general, I would definitely check this out!

A Beautiful Pearl nested in a thrilling, captivating, and horrifying genre!
ssgtyjsx22 February 2024
I was not sure what to expect with the film title, but, what I delightfully discovered was an amazing mix of horror, drama, mystery, love, and redemption. There are three aspects to cover.

First, Rachel Sommer, the writer, presented a story of lost love and desire for healing that I couldn't help but feel in my own heart. The story, without giving spoilers, so beautifully spoke to the viewer, that by the end, along with feeling incredibly scared and scarred by the thought of a captivating, evil presence in a cellphone, also allowed so much hope, that you appreciated the writer's intentions, and know beyond a doubt that this gem of a movie was written by a special soul whom has traveled far in the rich depths of life.

The cinematography by Luke Sommer stands by itself with one vista after another mixed in with scary techno horror swimming in spooky, dark, images and settings. Mr. Sommer captured natural beauty in one scene just to switch to the colors, backgrounds, structures, and provocative images that have scared us all. His editing brought every sense to the forefront of the viewing experience, along with the well composed musical score, where themes followed story lines seamlessly. The story benefited from Mr. Sommer's thoughtful cinematography details and expertise.

The actors were perfect in their roles. Whitney Rose Pynn and Justin Malik Jackson played the two main characters effortlessly. Ms Pynn showed a vulnerable, devastated young woman, but, also demonstrated believable strength and courage. Mr. Jackson brought out many emotions in his interactions with Ms Pynn, all with a unique personality lined with moments of humor, tenderness, compassion, and creepiness all in one! Jared Noble's role brought a believable, angelic, and tender relief to the ongoing horror.

I would encourage a close second and even third view of this film, as I believe there are deeper meanings that can be discovered when paying close attention, particularly in the "Cellphone" character, as I would describe the title.

Bravo to the cinematographer and writer, along with the actors, production company, and background crews who came together in delightful harmony to bring us this perfect Valentine's Day thriller, horror, and romantic film.

Chris helps her to find her way. Rachel Sommer wrote the script with insight that is not expected. Luke Sommer as the cinematography brings mystery and beauty through his lens.🙌. The soundtrack has a personality of its own. It a movie the demands attention, the details are very important. Racheal Sommer's script are the bones. Luke Sommers lens is the vision. These actors breathed life and created place for all of us who gone through grief.

Chilling Thrills Await: 'Cellphone' Delivers Gripping Horror and Supernatural Suspense
johnandersoncp18 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
"Cellphone" is a gripping and thrilling journey that kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. The storyline follows Wynne, a young woman grappling with the loss of her fiancé, who seeks solace in an isolated farmhouse. However, her sanctuary quickly turns into a nightmare as she begins experiencing eerie phenomena through her cellphone. The tension builds as Wynne discovers unsettling images of her own demise, forcing her to confront a terrifying reality: her own impending death.

The film expertly blends psychological horror with supernatural elements, creating a truly immersive and chilling experience. The performances are stellar, particularly from the lead actress who conveys Wynne's fear and desperation with raw emotion. The cinematography captures the eerie atmosphere of the farmhouse perfectly, enhancing the sense of dread and suspense.

What sets "Cellphone" apart is its unique premise and unpredictable twists. As Wynne delves deeper into the mystery of her phone, the audience is kept guessing until the very end. The film keeps you guessing and leaves a lasting impression, making it a must-watch for fans of the genre.

Overall, "Cellphone" is a standout film that delivers thrills, chills, and a thought-provoking narrative. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a captivating and spine-tingling cinematic experience.
