- A magician's assistant arrives at the hospital with a severe injury that has all the general surgeons involved, except for Bailey who is ignoring all of the attendings. As Cristina searches for a way to wake his father up, Ethan has a medical emergency of his own. Alex tries to avoid Jo at the hospital and a new cranial-facial specialist flirts with Arizona.—Nadia Nassar
- A 32-year-old magician's assistant named Kayla is wheeled in after an accident during a "saw-the-lady-in-half" routine. The magician is her husband and he accidentally sawed her just about in half with a chainsaw. Meredith calls for Bailey.
Arizona accidentally grabs a coffee that was made for a woman named Lauren, and Lauren playfully takes Arizona's coffee. "See you around, I hope," Lauren tells her.
Callie joins Meredith on the Kayla case and Meredith gives Derek the OK to take Heather because she has plenty of help. Heather wanted to stay on this. Webber shows up, saying he has Bailey's patients. Callie notes that Bailey has been cleared to operate and Webber says nothing. Meredith wonders how the woman is still alive.
Ethan's grandmother tells Hunt that Ethan stayed in his dad Paul's hospital room all night. Hunt is worried and asks Ethan's grandmother Nancy to prepare him for the possibility that his father might not wake up.
Cristina sees Alex in the elevator and teases him about his broken heart over Jo. He says he's trying to avoid her but sees her everywhere he turns. The elevator doors open and you can guess who was standing on the other side of them.
April is treating a 21-year-old woman named Kimmy, whose friends are completely wasted, who came in also drunk with apparent stomach pain. One of her friends vomits on the E.R. floor.
Callie briefly notices the name "Lauren" on Arizona's coffee cup and asks who Lauren is, but she cuts Arizona off as Arizona starts to tell her the "funny story." Callie wants to talk about Bailey and when they run into Jackson she says Bailey should be mad at him because he's the one who called the CDC. Stephanie walks up to Jackson next and he goes on about how he forgot about their date the previous night but would make it up to her tonight. Stephanie says nothing, apparently confused.
Bailey ignores Callie as she tries to make amends through the door of the research lab. Bailey is stone faced as Callie tries to get her attention.
Hunt and Ethan play soccer outside the hospital and Ethan quickly asks, "What if he doesn't wake up?" Hunt tells him, "We're not there yet." Nancy comes to take Ethan to the hotel for a bit and Hunt promises he'll update him if anything happens with his dad.
Meredith, Webber and others operate on Kayla, trying to figure out what's happened to her. Callie shows up and mentions that Bailey won't talk to her. Webber says his focus is on this patient.
Derek and Heather start to check on a 7-year-old girl named Iris who is there for an omental flap, a procedure in which healthy tissue will be taken from one part of her body and put into her brain to absorb some vessels to get her brain the blood it needs. Iris has a younger brother who is restless and fairly aggressive. Heather bends down to talk to him and he hits her in the head with an action figure before running out of the room as his parents give chase. Iris tells the doctors to go on explaining the procedure just to her because her parents "are going to be a while."
Arizona comes to see a new patient and finds Jackson and Lauren who is Dr. Boswell, a specialist flown in to help with Baby Tyler's case. Tyler's brain is on the outside of his head, in the middle of his face. Arizona seems pretty taken with Dr. Boswell.
The magician keeps getting frustrated with his other assistant, who blames him for including a chainsaw in their routine. He also gets annoyed with her for calling the illusions "tricks" and openly discussing the trap door element of the illusion.
Cristina runs through some scenarios with Stephanie about what could have gone wrong with Paul, Ethan's dad, after surgery, and why he hasn't woken up. Every time Stephanie speaks, Cristina tells her not to.
April asks Kimmy's friends to tell her everything Kimmy ingested the day before because she has a rupture in her stomach. The girls see Jackson and start flirting with him to come over and give them exams. They finally start telling April about all the drinks they'd had and just as they mention one that comes out "all smoky" with Jackson asking if it's real smoke or dry ice Kimmy violently pukes up blood.
The interns are watching video of the magician cutting his wife in half on the Internet and actually laughing about it. Cristina and Meredith catch Alex his his "sad face" and walk with him the long way, teasing him about his "little broken heart." He leaves and Meredith tells Cristina she's worried Bailey is mad at all of them. Cristina realizes she needs to talk to Bailey. She leaves. Meredith is paged to Kayla's room. Webber says they need to rush Kayla to surgery immediately and Sherice, the other assistant, starts to panic about whether she'll be OK. When Kayla's husband interrupts, Sherice reveals to him that Kayla wanted to leave him for her but he never paid enough attention to notice.
Cristina is now talking to Bailey through the lab door, asking her about how she's stumped by Paul's case. Bailey says nothing, but thinks she's Cristina figured out Paul's case and leaves happy. Callie and Arizona come to the door next, with Arizona telling Bailey she can be mad at them. Bailey says nothing.
April is operating on Kimmy, whose stomach was blown out by the drink that was made with liquid nitrogen. Jackson shows up to help. April has paged Bailey, but she's not responding and Webber is taking her patients. Jackson offers to help. April thanks him and apologizes for having blamed him for everything that's gone bad in her life. He accepts it.
Callie goes to the O.R. where Meredith and Webber are operating on Kayla again. Callie is still talking about how Bailey is mad at everyone and she urges Webber to talk to Bailey. He finally is fed up and tells Callie that he's the last person Bailey wants to talk to. He says he hurt her deeply and isn't sure he can repair, so they should focus on their patient. Callie apologizes and leaves.
Stephanie walks into Cristina's patient's room as Cristina is on the phone with a hospital in France, speaking French, trying to see if its research could help her figure out Paul's situation. It didn't. Stephanie mentions another trial in Mexico City that also didn't help and Cristina mocks her for having "nothing." Stephanie is annoyed and leaves.
Jo arrives to help on Alex and Derek's surgery on Iris. She asks a couple of questions and then Alex says the "show's over" and anyone not needed can leave. Heather asks Derek whether the result of this procedure is that "if we're lucky, in several weeks something may or may not happen?" Derek sarcastically says he's sorry if he's boring her and lets Jo scrub in to help him close up.
April and Jackson operate together and she's excited about the surgery. Jackson tells her he's "admiring her technique." He tells her about how many surgeries he's having to pass up on, and notes that he flew in Dr. Boswell for a facial reconstruction. He's jealous that she gets to fly around the world performing miracles.
Meanwhile, Lauren shows Arizona how she's going to reconstruct the face. Arizona says it's "amazing." Callie pops in and Arizona seems a little unnerved. Callie asks if she can sit in because it's not a procedure you get to see every day. Lauren happily invites her in and continues to demonstrate the process. Callie playfully whispers to Arizona, "I'm a little in love with her." Arizona just giggles a little uncomfortably.
Jackson arrives to see a line of doctors waiting outside the women's restroom. Cristina, Callie, Arizona, Meredith, Derek and Jackson are all waiting now and Bailey walks out. She says nothing as they all fall over themselves telling her they want to apologize. She keeps walking and locks herself in the lab again.
Ethan is brought into the emergency room after having gotten into his grandmother's sleeping pills. Arizona tells Hunt to stay back because he's "too close" to this case. Hunt yells at Nancy for having let this happen and says Arizona is now legally required to report this to social services. Nancy cries, "Please he can't die."
Arizona tells Hunt, who now has Cristina standing next to him, they might have administered a counter-drug to the sleeping pills in time. She also tells Hunt she already called social services. Cristina figures something out. The sleeping pills the kid took might help her figure out how to get Paul out of his coma. In a normal brain, the sleeping pill causes drowsiness, but where the chemical balance has been disturbed, the drug can reverse the effects. The sleeping drug could wake Paul up. She administers it and she, Hunt and Stephanie wait.
Webber reports to Sherice and Danny (the magician) that the next 24 hours will be critical Sherica and Danny argue again and Meredith tells them to put their differences behind them because Kayla needs them. Danny looks at his wife and says he ignored how unhappy she was, but hoped that if he got better gigs she'd love him again. He tells Sherice she's the one who can help Kayla. Webber sees all this and gets a pensive look on his face.
Jo finds Alex in an office and asks if they can clear the air. They end up arguing, with her telling him that her life gets worse every time he opens his mouth, and him telling her that he's "sick of crazy chicks with problems." She tells him to stay out of her life and he says he's out.
Derek helps Iris through a post-op hand exercise and tells her parents that the procedure should have helped. Heather chimes in and says it could be weeks before they know for sure, and Derek gives her a slight glare. Iris' little brother starts running around again, but Derek bends down and tells him that Iris needs rest because they opened her head and put magic inside. The kid seems intrigued by this. After Derek leaves, Heather tells the kid that Derek put a vampire in Iris' head, so he'd better watch it. The kid looks stunned.
April gives Kimmy's friends a lecture about how they should party less and help each other get good grades. Afterward, she asks Jackson if he wants to go to Joe's and he says he can't. April says she also has plans with Matthew.
Hunt is frustrated that they aren't seeing any progress with Paul. There's a social services worker downstairs and they need something soon.
Meredith is now outside the lab doors trying to talk to Bailey, who is not responding. We then get a look at what Bailey has been doing. She's been giving herself tests for MRSA dozens of them and they've all come back negative.
Hunt finds Ethan and asks what happened. Ethan says he "just wanted to go to sleep." Hunt tells him to never take any pills without a parent's permission and Ethan says, "I don't think I have any parents anymore." Ethan asks why they aren't trying anything, but Cristina walks in and says they are trying things. She says they haven't given up on Paul and neither should he. Ethan starts to cry.
Jackson and Alex leave, heading to Joe's to share "a few dozen pitchers." They see Jo and Jason arguing but Alex says he doesn't care about that, and they leave.
Nancy tells Hunt the social worker said these are "extraordinary circumstances" and wouldn't take Ethan. Nancy asks Hunt if he can help. She's worried she can't do it and there's no one else who can help. She cries as she tells Hunt that he knows as well as she does that "Paul is gone." She says Ethan needs someone to look after him and she "just can't."
Jackson gets to Joe's and sees Stephanie. He starts to make some excuses and she tells him to shut up. She wonders if he hasn't called in 11 days and whether it's because he runs the hospital now. He says it's because he's the head of the hospital but she says she deserves to be treated better. He kisses her.
On her way out, Arizona runs into Lauren in the elevator and Lauren says she was hoping to run into her. Arizona asks if it's because there's been any change in Tyler's case and Lauren says no, then compliments Arizona's eye. Arizona nervously and without turning to face Lauren says she's married to Callie (who Lauren met). Then, after running through a list of the things she loves about Callie, she finally turns and looks at Lauren and repeats, "And I'm married." Then she adds, "Also, I have one leg."
"I know," Lauren says. "Do you know how many Arizona Robbinses there are on the Internet?"
"One," Lauren whispers as she walks out of the elevator, adding, "See you tomorrow."
Arizona smiles to herself.
Shane and Heather talk and Shane is excited by the stuff Heather got to work on, but she feigns falling asleep. She asks him if he figured out how the magic trick works and he says he just can't figure out where the trap door is. Danny the magician overhears this last part and interjects, "You don't want to know, kid. Trust me, it'll ruin it." And he leaves his deck of cards on the counter before walking away.
Webber now stands at the door of the lab where Bailey has locked herself in. Ben comes running down the hall and thanks Webber for having called.
"She needs you," Webber says.
Ben knocks on the door and Bailey finally springs up. She opens the door to let Ben in and asks who called him. He says it doesn't matter, but she notes that his intern exams are coming up soon.
"And I'm your husband," he says, after seeing all the petrie dishes from her many tests laid out on the counter. He tells her she doesn't need to keep doing things by herself anymore. He tells her it wasn't her fault, but she can't let it go. She says she knew all the families of the patients and she did this to them.
She says she's been testing herself and all the tests come back negative, but she feels so looking down at her hands, "dirty."
She then cries and says, "They all died. Because of me."
Cristina and Hunt lay together and she asks him if he wants a kid.
"I want you," he says. Repeating it again before kissing her. She says nothing as she pulls his arm over her and snuggles next to him.
Zola has a tea party for Derek and Meredith. He's worried that she's so perfect and her little brother could be a monster. Meredith says that won't happen.
Alex gets home to find Jo sitting at his front door. He's exasperated, mocking her for a bit about how he's trying to leave her alone and get out of her life. She turns out of the shadow and reveals a beaten-up face. Crying, she asks, "Can I stay here? Please?"
