Among the key updates for its 2024 Korea slate is Oldboy director Park Chan-wook (Oldboy) releasing his first project with Netflix at the end of this year, titled Uprising.
The film, directed by Sang-man Kim and written by Shin Chul, was previously known as War and Revolt, and is due in Q4. Currently revelling in the success of recently-uploaded Don Lee-starring film “Badland Hunters” and already teasing the second season of “Squid Game,” Netflix has unveiled a major slate of Korean films and series for 2024.
In August last year, Netflix publicly committed to investing $2.5 billion on Korean content over the next four years. That reflected both Netflix’s position as the country’s leading streamer, with an estimated 6.5 million subscribers, and its adopted role as one of the biggest exporters of Korean film and TV content.
“We were able to make this [investment] decision because we have great confidence that the Korean creative industry will continue to tell great stories,” said the streamer’s co-chief Ted Sarandos at the time of the spending commitment.

The Bequeathed is a slow-burn Korean crime thriller streaming on Netflix. The 6-episode show sometimes feels tedious and has a lackluster punch; however, it’s a decent weekend binge-watch, especially with friends, because you can come up with your own theories and find little details to make it more entertaining. But if you’re looking for something more unnerving in terms of plot twists or criminal activity, then some of the shows on this list are going to be feeding you well. Of course, there are the classics like Tunnel, Signal, and Voice that are usually the first on this list, but I’m going to avoid those and give you some slightly newer shows that you may have missed. On the other hand, I’ve also added a couple of shows here that come under the “exasperated” watch list because of how frustrating they are to watch. Anxiety to the roof,...

The new 6-part Korean series on Netflix is the latest on their roster of Korean dramas. It’s almost as if the platform is conditioning us to wait for a new one to arrive every other Friday at least, and I’d be exhausted if I were on the back-end team. The Bequeathed is a show about Seo-Ha, an assistant professor in Seoul, who one day learns about the death of an uncle on her father’s side. Seo-Ha’s been estranged from her father since she was 7 and doesn’t even know of this uncle, but things start to go absolutely off the rails soon after she learns about his death. It’s interesting because the show begins with this awfully unnerving scene of this old man in an isolated village falling to his death in the twilight, but as the show progresses, this old man is completely forgotten.

The Bequeathed is Netflix’s latest Korean thriller series and after its release, it is gaining a ton of traction on the streaming service. The Bequeathed revolves around a college lecturer who inherits a burial ground from an estranged uncle. This prompts her to go to the family mountain but when she gets there all of the buried family secrets come out and ominous things start happening including a murder that might reveal everything the townspeople are trying to hide. If you liked the Korean series here are some similar shows you could watch next.

The Bequeathed is Netflix’s new Korean crime thriller, and I’ve said this a dozen times already, but this is a genre that will forever be loved in the Korean entertainment industry. It’s almost as if every Friday, Netflix is churning out one of these mini-series that can be binged in a day and forgotten by night. Oops! I don’t think all Korean thrillers are forgettable. In fact! There are some absolutely fantastic ones. I mean, we all know that some of the best thriller films (and the most unnerving ones) come from South Korea. However, this might be the reason the genre is becoming a little bit oversaturated in 2024. Of course, it’s not easy to come up with something new so often, but this same old story that’s recycled with new packaging is getting a little old. The Bequeathed is neither hot nor cold...

The Bequeathed is a K-drama that resembles many a thriller Korean film such as Umma or The Wailing in the way it is presented– terror in the background of a beautiful gray landscape that sucks you in. I suppose, even in movie form, this could lead to a drab viewing experience because of the slow burn. The Bequeathed is only 6 episodes, which is extremely short, even for a K-drama; however, it feels somewhat draggy in bits. In the last episode, it’s finally time for Seo-Ha to learn who is behind all the killings and why. What I found most interesting about the last two episodes of the show is the conundrum in Seo-Ha’s mind regarding her brother, Young-Ho. Throughout the series, she’s a little bit unlikeable, always questioning herself about whether she should be good or not. At the end of the show, we finally get an answer,...

From revenge dramas to classic romances, 2024 promises to be another fruitful year for Korean content. At the top of the list are the anticipated returns of Squid Game and All of Us Are Dead, along with upcoming K-dramas like the fantastical Everything Will Come True, fake marriage drama The Trunk, and space romance Ask the Stars. And there are plenty more worth getting excited over, such as the psychological thriller The Bequeathed, the 1980s comedy Aema, the action thriller Badland Hunters, and the revenge mystery Wonderful World.
