So we saw the 1st project of the Las Vegas Sphere, which is ‘Postcard from Earth’ directed and filmed by Darren Aronofsky on the Big Sky huge format 316MP18K camera. Defining it as an ‘IMAX on steroids’ would be an understatement.
Behind the scenes of Postcard from Earth. The Big Sky camera Sphere=IMAX on steroids
As fans of the huge canvas (=IMAX!), one of the first things we did when staying in Vegas was to go see the Sphere. YMCinema was among the first that write about this very special medium. Before waiting for a movie on it, we defined it as IMAX on steroids. However, after watching Darren Aronofsky’s Postcard from Earth, we can conclude that this definition is an understatement of this whole insane experience. The Sphere is not just a giant screen, but much more than that. Proportionally, it’s X20 the size of the largest IMAX.

From Sergei Eisenstein to Andrei Konchalovsky, Russian filmmakers perfected a formula for manufacturing social reality out of highly concentrated mixes of activist outrage and artistic chutzpah. Political hindsight overshadows their unparalleled toying with film language, but it also deepens great works of art like Aleksandr Dovzhenko’s Earth and Mikhail Kalatozov’s I Am Cuba. These two enthralling synergies of sight and sound were made with the support of a communist machine that would eventually fail the people of the Soviet Union and Cuba, but they’re first and foremost exaltations of the rebel spirit, hurled at audiences with a fierce conviction and belief in cinema as a propagandistic vehicle for change.
For the Soviet Union, I Am Cuba was an opportunity to promote socialism abroad during de-Stalinization in the Khrushchev era, and for Cuba it was a way of staking out a cinematic presence. So it is that the...

Every player who has played Helldivers 2 will agree that it is a power-packed title, however, it does have its fair share of problems. The game crashes, server issues, and faulty patches are just some of the issues the players have faced since day one of the launch. Besides, the in-game foes add to the woes.

Another thing that has been consistently bothersome is the struggle with the rewards when players complete Major Orders. Every time a Major Order is completed, developers Arrowhead are flooded with players complaining that they have not received their medal payouts. In fact, Arrowhead themselves have admitted that at the moment, the current reward system is pretty useless.

Another big award show took place this weekend (in addition to the SAG Awards), the Film Independent Spirit Awards, which celebrates indie film and TV. One thing about this awards show is that their idea of independent sometimes makes me scratch my head a bit, with HBO’s big-budget The Last of Us nominated a whole bunch in the TV category, along with Netflix’s Beef and several other streaming shows, which I’m not sure one could call independent. For films, there’s a $30 million budget cap. For TV, I’m honestly not sure what the benchmark is because Last of Us was notoriously an expensive show to shoot, costing at least $100 million.
Indeed, The Last of Us won some key awards on the TV side, winning Best Supporting Performance (for Nick Offerman) and Best Breakthrough Performance (for Keivonn Montreal Woodard). Over on the film side, American Fiction and...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is as huge as it can get with countless superheroes and superhero teams and the many iterations of them in the comics as well as on the big screen. Yet the Avengers have remained the top-tier team in both formats, closely followed by the band of space misfits, the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, the Avengers
Both teams have often found themselves pitted against each other in one or the other fan discussions. Although there have been a few instances where both teams went head to head, there hasn’t been a clear winner. Yet James Gunn, writer-director of the MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, reckons that the Guardians would be a clear winner in such a fight.

It’s been a decade of reinvention for Hurray for the Riff Raff, the recording moniker of singer-songwriter Alynda Segarra. After years of street-busking and self-releasing acoustic records, Segarra cemented their status as an old-timey roots standard-bearer on 2014 Small Town Heroes. But over the course of their past two albums–2017’s The Navigator and 2021’s Life On Earth–Segarra chipped away at that artistic identity by exploring other musical lineages (everything from alt-pop to punk to Nuyorican folk-poetry) while carving out a truer artistic self. Their new album, The Past Is Still Alive,...

What would a syllabus for a seminar on nonhuman perspectives in contemporary cinema look like? There are any number of recent documentary and fiction films about animal lives that one could put on there, including Jerzy Skolimowski’s E.O., Andrea Arnold’s Cow, and Elsa Kremer and Levin Peter’s Space Dogs. Of course, all these share the limitation that, though they transgress human/animal boundaries, they’re still at least tenuously tied to reality. Not a single one of them dares to question what it would look like if a group of Bigfoots pissed and shat all over a forest roadway in raging anger and confusion over its mere existence.

(Welcome to Ani-time Ani-where, a regular column dedicated to helping the uninitiated understand and appreciate the world of anime.)
Listen, I love anime and the endless possibilities of the medium. Unfortunately, much like how Hollywood is mostly inundated by uncomplicated four-quadrant blockbusters that get tiring after a while, anime, too, is inundated with uncomplicated action-centric titles that cater to a mass audience. There's a reason the vast majority of anime shows are about teenagers, which is fine but it means that anytime a show comes out that deals with adult characters and mature themes it is worth paying attention to.
So imagine how thrilled I was to find out that there was an anime adaptation of a manga by the guy who gave us the anime equivalent of an HBO prestige drama — and it is based on a story by the man who created anime as we know it.
That anime is "Pluto.

The first "Aquaman" was a huge surprise, a movie that made Aquaman gritty and serious but also goofy and funny. Sure, the movie had a very generic plot, but it shined when it went full bonkers, like when Julie Andrews voiced a sea monster, or when the film played a Pitbull cover of Toto's "Africa" during a scene where Aquaman heads to the Sahara desert.
"Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom" has glimpses of that greatness when its core adventure finally gets going, but we have to slog through some stuff before that. The opening minutes in particular don't do a good job of selling this movie, with a montage of Arthur Curry taking care of his newborn son while also kicking ass as Aquaman, while at the same time also being rather bored at his job as King of Atlantis. It is a montage that screams last-minute reshoot, with...

Editor Jennifer Lame’s work has appeared on many of the world’s largest screens this year. Over the summer, her second movie with director Christopher Nolan, his historical epic Oppenheimer, for Universal, had moviegoers scrambling for tickets to Imax’s large-format theaters. And in October, the Lame-edited Postcard From Earth, from director Darren Aronofsky, became the first movie to debut at the newly opened Sphere in Las Vegas.
Speaking to the success of Nolan’s drama about the father of the atomic bomb, Lame says, “I really enjoy cutting people in rooms talking. Ahhh.. seems just like yesterday that Film Independent President Josh Welsh was on stage at the 2023 Film Independent Spirit Awards announcing the kickoff to our year-long #AD30 celebration, commemorating three uninterrupted decades—pandemics, strikes and recessions be damned!—of Film Independent Artist Development programs.
Of course, in reality that announcement was one full awards cycle ago, back when the Past Lives, Earth Mamas and May Decembers of the world were but a flicker in eyes of industry plaudit prognosticators. But the story of #AD30 has only grown in the interim.

The Oscar-contending documentary Anselm marks an encounter between two of the world’s great artists – one renowned for cinema, the other for painting, installations, and sculpture.
The filmmaker, Wim Wenders, began his career more than 50 years ago, with credits that include Paris, Texas, Wings of Desire, Buena Vista Social Club, The Salt of the Earth, and Pina, and two this year alone – Anselm and the narrative feature Perfect Days. His protagonist in Anselm – the German-born artist Anselm Kiefer, may not be as well known among the public as Wenders, but his work stuns in its power, erudition, and scale. Simply put, Kiefer makes art of monumental dimensions.
Anselm Kiefer in ‘Anselm’
“We were in the landscape of his own studio [outside Paris],” Wenders tells Deadline, “this huge depot, bigger than airplane hangars — and several of them.”
Capturing the size of the workspace and the individual artworks, Wenders concluded, called for something different than a standard 2D approach.

Andrew Haigh’s touching new drama All Of Us Strangers was the big winner at the 2023 British Independent Film Awards (BIFA).
As the calendar year draws to a close, we’re also inching close toward the season that will see multiple prestigious awards bodies, in theory, hand the best films of the year a golden statuette. The season kicked off with the British Independent Film Awards, also known as BIFA 2023, which were held in London on the 3rd of December.
Lolly Adefope and Kiell Smith-Bynoe hosted the event which celebrated British cinema, especially the slightly lesser-seen films with budgets far smaller than that of Oppenheimer. There were some terrific films nominated this year, and the roster of winners was as surprising as it was satisfying.
Andrew Haigh’s All Of Us Strangers was the biggest winner of the night, taking home a total of four awards plus three previously announced ones.

Even by its own ridiculously high standards, 2023 has been one hell of a year for British independent cinema. Whilst Hollywood has been all but shut down by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, over on this side of the pond, it feels like the candle for British indie cinema – and our collective love for those who make it possible – has never burned brighter. As such, it comes as no surprise to see today’s announcement of the nominations for the British Independent Film Awards 2023 filled with wall-to-wall bangers that represent the very best that British filmmaking has to offer.

Kate Middleton has been a working royal since she married Prince William in 2011. William and Kate are the Prince and Princess of Wales, and through the years, Kate has developed a reputation that has hardly been tarnished. However, upon Harry and Meghan leaving the family, the two opened up about their own experience with royal life — including the time Kate made Meghan cry and the time Kate appeared disgusted at Meghan’s decision to give her a hug.
