Tierra Whack is back with a new single, “Chanel Pit,” and an accompanying music video. Stream it below.
Produced by Nick Verruto, “Chanel Pit” finds the Philly rapper and singer sprinkling a variety of references to Microsoft Excel, Resident Evil, and Vin Diesel alongside fashion designers like Rick Owens. “Mosh pit smell like Chanel” she raps on the chorus. “Yes, Microsoft, I’ma excel/ Mhm, nine, ten, eleven, fuck 12.”
In the typically whimsical visual treatment, directed by frequent collaborator Alex Lill, Whack goes through an automated car wash without actually sitting in a vehicle. Watch the video below.
Whack spoke about “Chanel Pit” in an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, during which she explained the song has been sitting around for a while. “I made it a few years ago,” she said. “I have a lot of music stacked, but it’s something about anytime I would play that song for people,...

It might officially be fall, but Netflix had a “Strong Black Summer.”
At least, that was the name of the streamer’s warm-weather months campaign promoting a string of TV, film and documentary projects fronted by Black talent.
Among the hot titles were Gabrielle Union’s rom-com “The Perfect Find,” the John Boyega-starring conspiratorial caper “They Cloned Tyrone,” a fourth season of the Emmy-nominated comedy “The Upshaws,” comedian Michelle Buteau’s semi-autobiographical series “Survival of the Thickest,” the “Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop” documentary, and a first look at awards contenders “Stamped from the Beginning” and “Rustin.”
“The goal of ‘Strong Black Summer’ was to generate conversation and create community with Black consumers and partners,” says Netflix’s Shelly Gillyard, vice president of marketing in the U.S. and Canada.
The campaign was led by Netflix’s “Strong Black Lead,” which has been a crucial department...

The New York Giants’ opening night didn’t exactly go as they hoped on Sunday, when they lost 40-0 in a game against the Dallas Cowboys. But the tri-state area still garnered a win when New Jersey-native Queen Latifah kicked off the night with a dazzling rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” at MetLife Stadium.
Fireworks blasted out around the stadium as Queen Latifah ran through the national anthem with backing vocals from New York Fire Department and New York Police Department choir members. Even as it began to rain, the...

Tierra Whack's fate in hip-hop was set the moment she entered the world on Aug. 11, 1995 - the same day the culture was born 22 years prior. The North Philadelphia native turned heads thanks to a YouTube freestyle that went viral when she was just 15 years old and known as Dizzle Dizz. The breakout moment was a culmination of Whack's early years, studying all she could about rap and finding inspiration in iconic albums like Outkast's "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below" and Eminem's "The Marshall Mathers LP." Years later, she'd emerge with her own acclaim as one of the most promising lyricists of her generation.
Whack's 15-minute debut album "Whack World," released in May 2018, skyrocketed her to superstardom, taking the rap sensation to global stages and new heights in hip-hop. And today, she's grateful for how it all blessed her career. In Netflix's "Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop" docuseries,...

Netflix’s Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop revisited the real OGs of the Hip-Hop movement for women and transformed Black culture through their poetry, art, and music. Directed and produced by Dream Hampton, Hannah Beachler, and Raeshem Nijhon, this groundbreaking series showcases how women reshaped the music industry and inspired generations. Despite Hip-Hop not being my favorite genre, what I appreciated about the documentary series is how it prompts us to contemplate the dedication and passion of these artists in pushing boundaries and becoming inspirations.
Even though many people around the world vibe with the music of contemporary Hip-Hop stars like Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, and Megan Thee Stallion, not everyone is familiar with the original trailblazers of the genre. In a male-dominated world, the story of how a woman became the first female Mc is often overlooked. However, thanks to this documentary, we gain valuable insights...

‘Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop‘ is a four-part documentary series that delves into the rich history and profound impact of women in the hip-hop genre, spanning from its early beginnings to the present day.
Hip-hop has rightfully become a cultural phenomenon, with African American women being one of its main pillars. This documentary is dedicated to them, the ladies of hip-hop, and the evolution of this music starting from the song “Rapper’s Delight” that gave it its name. It explores how this style quickly turned into a multi-billion dollar business, while also commenting on the social issues faced by African American women. Hip-Hop is a product of the inherent need to express the rights, wrongs, injustices and dreams that were deeply rooted in the struggles of the underprivileged classes.

The second half of Season 2 of “The Lincoln Lawyer” put the popular crime drama back atop the Top 10 charts for the week of July 31, as far as the English TV list, but how did “Heartstopper” Season 2 fare after its August 3 debut? Read on for this week’s analysis.
It seems appropriate that we start with the TV chart this week, since two returning shows topped the English series list with the second half of the second season of “Lincoln Lawyer” receiving 6.7 million views, followed by “Heartstopper” in second place with 6.1 million views. “Lincoln Lawyer” was the #1 watched show in the United States, Canada, four European countries, as well as Australia and New Zealand, while “Hearstopper” was #1 in Mexico and a few other European countries, including the United Kingdom.
“The Witcher” Season 3 took third place on that chart with 5.4 million views, followed by Season 3 of “Sweet Magnolias” with 2.9 million views. The...

August has arrived, and with it, the last full month of summer-worthy shows and flicks, at least for 2023. From all the summer sensations to food weather, carnival fun and, of course, the lack of school, the streamer’s film slate will update with some appropriate flicks like “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2,” “Eat Pray Love,” “Despicable Me” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” respectively.
If you’re one of those who senses the change in the air as soon as the salty summer heat gives way to crisp fall fog, “Heartstopper” Season 2, complete with its cartoon drawings of leaves, waits for you starting August 3. “The Lincoln Lawyer: Season 2 Part 2” concludes the two-part followup to the legal drama starring Manuel Garcia-Rulfo. “Heart of Stone,” a big tentpole film starring Gal Gadot and Jamie Dornan, promises action-lovers a good time.
For those who didn’t get enough of the Depp v.

With its list of new releases for August 2023, Netflix is giving the anime world another shot.
No, we’re not talking about the streamer’s usual anime offerings – which are present this month in the form of Ragnarok season 3 (Aug. 24) and other titles – we’re talking about Netflix’s attempt to make live-action anime adaptations a thing. Following the relative failure of its Cowboy Bebop remake, Netflix is giving it another go, this time with arguably an even bigger anime classic. One Piece will premiere on Aug. 31. Telling the story of beloved straw hat wearing pirate Monkey D. Luffy, this adaptation will attempt to do original creator Eiichiro Oda and his many fans proud.
