“A Complicated Story” marks the debut of upcoming Hong Kong director Chau Kwoon Wai, and despite being a graduation project is a notable release, being the first film from the new Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts (Hkapa) film program, produced by Johnnie To and William Kong of Milkyway and Edko Films. Adapted from a novel by popular author Yi Shu, the film is a drama dealing with the currently hot topic of surrogate motherhood, which as the title suggests weaves an intricate web of secrets, lies and shifting relationships. At the heart of the film is actress Zhu Zhi Ying (“Lust, Caution”), playing a university student called Liu Yazi who agrees to become a surrogate mother for a rich couple in order to raise the money for an operation for her seriously ill brother. Despite surrogacy being a legal and moral grey area, Liu Yazi agrees to the deal,...

Bends, the first full-length film from Flora Lau, observes a dreamy Hong Kong through the eyes of a wealthy, middle-aged kept woman Anna (Carina Lau), and her young, blue-collar driver (Chen Kun). Minutes into the film, shortly after Anna sips champagne as the hostess of a dinner party, and declares "look at me, I'm so free" as a testimonial for sending your children to boarding school, her husband and source of income disappears. What's both mysterious and fascinating about the film is that Anna never reports his absence to the police, nor seems worried for him. She knows, it seems, that he has deserted her and that the financial well will soon dry up. Reacting, or non-reacting, with denial, annoyance and bewilderment, Carina Lau...

In the last wave of Tiff announcements, it’s the Discovery section that we’re most curious about as it normally is loaded up with the rookies, many first-time and second time filmmakers breaking into world film festival circuit programming with genuine gems. Among the 25 plus selected films that make up the programme, we’ve got a handful of U.S. independent films in the likes of Mark Phinney’s Fat, a pair of Us in Progress Paris projects in Aron Gaudet and Gita Pullapilly’s Beneath The Harvest Sky and Tommy Oliver’s 1982, while a newbie filmmaker part of the clan in Gia Coppola makes the trip from Venice Film Festival’s Horizon section to Toronto with the book to film adapation of James Franco Palo Alto (see pic above). Also from Venice, we have the Venice Days included Bethlehem, from Israeli helmer Yuval Adler and an item that...

Bends, the feature debut from writer-director Flora Lau, isn’t a film that, with its potent framework of famial dissaray, should struggle to engage on an emotional level. Yet this slight, deliberate tale of strained families keeps the audience at a distance, making it a curiously uninvolving sit that rarely engages on even the most basic level. A story revolving around two families which become ever more intertwined, the first half of this equation is Anna Li (Carina Lau), a housewife who has married into money, and when her businessman husband is away, she kills time by lunching around Hong Kong with her friends. Driving her from place to place is Fai (Chen Kun), a lower-class sort living across the border in Shenzhen, and almost simultaneously the pair’s troubles seem to coincide; Anna’s husband suddenly disppears without a trace, while the urgency for Fai to get his pregnant wife into a Hong Kong hospital — while...

Bends [Guo Jie] (Flora Lau, Hong Kong)
Un Certain Regard
Above: Carina Lau in Bends.
The narrative potential of the "driver-boss" couple has been used many times either to describe class relationships and conflicts or to redesign the part of the "commenting choir" by placing it behind the hero. In Flora Lau's first film, the relationships between Anna Lau (Carina Lau) and her chauffeur Ah Hui (Chen Kun) materialize social differences, but the story puts this classical pattern in motion through a third term: a border.
Anna lives in Hong Kong, the wife of a wealthy businessman, only busy with her socialite circles, as goes with the status. Ah Hui is a Hong Kong citizen but his wife is from Shenzhen in the Canton province, a mere 18 kilometers from Hong Kong. She is expecting a second child, and all of Ah Hui efforts are about making her give birth in Hk,...
