Tell No Lies
BandSAboutMovies20 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Tell Me No Lies feels inspired by Denise Huskins, who was accused of faking her own kidnapping. That's the subject of American Nightmare, a Netflix series, but this is a Tubi Original.

Sofia Rose (Keturah Chambers) and her boyfriend Ben (Aaron Fontaine) are getting together for dinner. He tries to make it seem like they're still a couple and tries to fix where their relationship went wrong, even if she wants nothing to do with him. He breaks down her defenses and later that night, while they're in bed together, a kidnapper with a voice changer breaks in and kidnaps her. Ben's the main suspect, as best friend Emily (Nkechi Simms) has hated him for the way he treats her galpal. But this feels like a giallo -- everything does to me, I'm obsessed -- and the truth is always much odder than the stories we tell.

When she was young, Sofia's father was shot in a convenience store by a criminal accidentally released by Detective Wright (Wil Johnson). By coincidence -- hmm, maybe not? -- he's on the case. And when Sofia frees herself from being kidnapped, he suspects her. But she's smart enough to work with Jessica (Emily Eaton-Plowright), a young reporter who wants to prove herself.

I just read another review of this movie that was beyond distressed that this movie took a true case and twisted it. Have you ever watched an exploitation movie before? If that upset you, you can never watch so many movies.

Tell No Lies keeps things switching and changing and moving until the end, genuinely having some surprises beyond what you expect from a Tubi Original. Actually, I have to change my mind on that, as not only do I watch every single one of them but I also have to tell you that the quality has improved so much recently.

Don't listen to the Lies
Jblum57 February 2024
To date - I have given 32 1 star ratings out of 2500+ ratings in my IMDb career which means , this title is in the bottom 1% all time for me... and that seems fair.

This movie tells the story of a kidnapping gone wrong and the most inept police officer who is trying to solve it. Wil Johnson plays detective Wright who is written to be comedically bad. I believe honestly as an actor- he had the strongest individual performance in the film but his character is hilarious in all the wrong ways. I am pretty certain the writer hates police and this was their way of getting back at them. He believes a lie detector is accurate. Any small piece of evidence causes him to make giant leaps in logic that make no sense. At one point - he has a hunch and announces it to the press as an accusation. The police never put other detectives on the case despite it being a huge case and on local news.

The movies many twists are nonsensical. They hit you with the most passionless high school level character motivations , double crosses and reveals that it feels lazy in the worst ways. The ending is predictable with about 20-25 minutes left, and it's very mean spirited and doesn't really fit with the tone of the rest of the film. The kidnapping exists as this film's inciting incident and it too makes no sense.

So this is an ultimate skip. Maybe for a morbid watch at how absolutely hilarious the police department is. This movie made me angry though. Not in a fun way. Just in a... why did I fall for a decent IMDb rating and waste just under 2 hours?

1/10.

Miss Sofia Rose: Taken!!!
lavatch31 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Wow! This was a thriller with seemingly never-ending twists and turns. The style drew upon the techniques of film noir. But there was also a freshness and originality in the creative choices.

Miss Sofia Rose is a successful executive in an ad agency. But shockingly, she is kidnapped on her 35th birthday. Miraculously, she is let go by her captor and then arrested for allegedly staging her own abduction!

The performances were first rate, and pacing of the film was superb. The audience is constantly kept guessing about the character motivations. A particularly inept police investigation provides unlimited possibilities for the devious machinations involving Miss Rose. The result is a roller coaster ride of emotions.

It is hard not to admire the scripting, directing, and acting, which coalesced into the best neo-noir thriller since "Body Heat" in 1981.

I have to start off by saying that this is one of the BEST New Tubi Orignals that they've put out in awhile!!!!

This movie had so many thrilling twists and turns that it'll leave you on on the edge of your seat guessing what is gonna happen next!!! Very well put together because I love a good mystery, drama, thriller and this as just ALL of it!!!

I gave it a 10 out of 10 because the ending will blow your mind and you WON'T SEE IT COMING!!! Even up to the last minute, after Sophia leaves the jail IT'LL JUST BLOW YOUR MIND!!! I definitely DID NOT see any of that coming at all!!!!!

You gotta see this movie!

The beginning was like an intro into what was going to be shown throughout the movie. It's like an introduction. The middle and ending WAS A PLOT I DID NOT SEE COMING!!! This movie was written well and the actors were amazing. This is movie I can watch more than once (I have). I will definitely recommend anyone who sees this review to grab them a snack, blanket, and get comfortable. This movie will have you blaming everyone. 😂😂 I hope to see these actors in more movies. Thumbs up to the producers. This movie is definitely a 10/10. If you are looking for a good thriller, drama, or mystery movie, this is it.

Truly Intriguing!
mandagrammy13 April 2024
I find it hard to believe someone giving this film a 1 star rating. This was a totally engrossing film from beginning to end. It was well acted and well scripted. The pace was on point. Flashbacks gave plenty of clues, but the red herrings kept the story one step ahead of the viewer at all times. It was only towards the end that I thought I had the whole truth, but even then there was a tiny bit more. This is not only a whodunit, but also a worthy whydunit and howdunit. Yes, there are a couple of coincidences that seem a bit too easy for belief, but this is a fiction, which allows for leeway. Overall, this is a film that stays interesting and offers a great payoff in the end.
