Shows some potential in the beginning, but loses pace soon, in the end it is very forgettable

Browsing the movies list of my mother's cable TV provider, we found this entry. I didn't know it is a movie from 2013. I thought it was the 2018 movie, which is actually the sequel of this one. My mother is a fan of the character - Crô enjoys a high reputation and fame locally since his first incarnation in the 2011's soap opera Fina Estampa. So I gave this a try.

The movie is not all that bad in the beginning. The initial scenes shows his various professional attempts after working as a Butler in a rich women's house - these scenes are truly fun and give a foundation for a movie with potential. Later the movie depicts his origins and his mother - the scene is well structured, even despite the fact his mother is played by Ivete Sangalo, who is not an actress to start with - she's a famous Brazilian music star who made her way into this movie somehow. Until this point, it shows some potential. But then it loses the pace spending many minutes with a whole segment of unnecessary scenes, jokes that don't land, and the lack of a substantial plot to engage the viewers.

Making a full-length movie is very challenging. To engage the audience for 2 hours straight, you must entertain your viewers during all this length, but my impression is this plot could be well delivered in a timespan of 45-60 minutes - it could have left a better impression. But they had to fill the film length, the cast is good enough and could have delivered a lot better experience if the plot wasn't so sloppy.

In the last minutes the movie finally grabbed a little of my attention when it changes to a faster pace, but it was already too late - the movie wasted the chance of developing their characters until that point and failed bad - the characters are dull and not very believable, and I'm pretty sure the actors are not to blame. Cinema is very much the director's view, so the fault is of the director and a subpart screenplay.

Well...no wonder this movie never reached critique's success. It's really concerning when you discover a sequel was made five years later. When this movie finishes, you really are not willing it had a sequel. Despite all the potential of Crô and a valuable cast, the movie does fail to entertain. A pity. By the way, my mother seems to agree with my review - she also seemed disappointed in the end. I don't want to give a try to the 2018 sequel now. If you don't have time for films that waste their potential, you don't have time for this initial Crô movie. Go see him in Fina Estampa soap opera instead. That will be worth of your time.

Great

Warning: Spoilers
Bringing Crô in the soap opera to the big screens was an excellent idea. The excellent performance of all the characters in the film. Since Crô performs a heroic act of adopting the enslaved Bolivian girl who in the end loses her mother and saves those women from living in slavery. Crô's great humor, great performance by Alexandre Nero. The action scenes are very well produced and the drama throughout the film.
