Gary Oldman, Ralph Fiennes, Amanda Seyfried and Benedict Cumberbatch were cast in the lead roles before the project was shelved.
In May 2018, Jessica Lange is reportedly in talks in a supporting role as Julia Margaret Cameron.
The complete budget is unknown yet, but the film already got tax incentives of $5.04 million from the state of California in 2018. Oldman reportedly said: "Everyone knows incentives are a critical part of the industry these days, as we all find ourselves seeking and comparing the best options available for each film. Without the state's tax credit program and support from the California Film Commission, the Governor and our lawmakers, it is a certainty that we would not be able to shoot this essential California story in California. My colleagues and I are simply thrilled for the opportunity to bring this story home." [Deadline, July 2018]
This will be the second feature film about Eadweard Muybridge. The first one was the Canadian drama Eadweard (2015).
