In 1986 the unbriefed night shift operators of a Chernobyl nuclear reactor are directed to conduct a third simulated power outage as a safety test. The previous two tests were unsuccessful and this time the reactor is not at nominal operating conditions. When trouble develops the operators don't understand what is happening and react improperly several times.—David Foss
