Mecha Battler
This is another of my favorite video games of all time as well as shoot em ups. I was a kid from the 90's and I was a fan of anime and of course one of the subgenres that attracted me was of course the giant mecha. It was also so cool, even if it might be a slightly farfetched concept, like simply why the mechas must be so tall or look humanoid all the time. You could say my attraction to them is like anyone for an automobile, from how they work, design of them, the fact they were vehicles that were steps into the future.
This is another game in the shoot em up genre of games but it's something different because it's one that based on mecha which is something I honestly don't see often in the genre and still don't which is surprising. In most shoot em up most of the time it consists of the standard vehicles like planes, jets, spaceships; and with the fantasy shooters it's some magical flying ability, relic, or creature with flying capability. But never really mecha, it's probably because most of the time it's hard to replicate the fluidity you would see in the anime; the translations from anime to video game have always either flown high or crashed and burned. However, this game is one that thankfully is a highflier and gains altitude for fun.
In a way this game was probably the closest we had to an arcade adaptation of the "Gundam" franchise, surprised they never even had one.
The graphical presentation is top notch, the backgrounds are all well detailed really brings the sci fi feel. But it's really the mechas and other combat vehicles that are of course the real stars of the game. Really like how well detailed your mecha is along with the enemy mecha, all look like they could have belonged on a mecha anime show, but they don't as their all original which makes them even cooler. Music is also good, there are plenty of memorable tracks that are on my personal list of favorite shoot em up tracks that I enjoy listening to along the other well-known ones for well-known shooters like "R-Type", "In the Hunt" (both games I reviewed), etc.
Gameplay is soild, I like how slightly unique it is from other shooters. In this game you don't just get to shoot one direction like any standard shooter but multiple directions. This is cool and makes sense as it gives you the feel of being in arial mecha combat.
There is also a twin stick shooter like function where when you hold down the fire button and you shoot one direction continuously. But this also can make you vulnerable to attack from other directions as you can't change the direction of your fire, for as long as you hold the fire button. You also have a melee weapon which is a laser saber which is strong and just about cuts though anything, but this is only effect in close range so only use it when necessary. And finally, there are a good amount of power up and weapons to collect and build on, one highlight is when you create and have a giant laser canon which almost makes you unstoppable as it just about blows away anything to everything effortless, though this of course has limited ammo so make your shot count.
Despite all you can do there is one catch. Below you there is a gauge which counts down your fire power the more you discharge and use. Once your firepower reaches a lower number or zero, you are still able to fire but your stopping power isn't very strong. So, you must keep your eye on your gauge and pick out your shots carefully.
The difficulty in the game is one the hard end of things but is manageable, once again like all shoot em ups it's a matter of trial and error, but it can be beat. Each of the level aren't too long so you don't have to worry about overstaying one's welcome. But each of the level are no cake walk as their all different which means each is a different challenge to adjust and go through, which is good because it keeps the game fresh, and the levels don't blend together which at times is a fundamental problem most shoot em ups suffer from.
Cy Battler gains the altitude to make the cut.
Rating: 4 stars.
