The scene involving dogs attacking the cast was initially meant to be done by wolves, however the parents of the cast would not allow Ryan to use trained wolves for the scene even though wranglers were already training the timber wolves based in Muskegan Michigan. The scene was initially scheduled to be filmed 2 months prior to when it was eventually filmed due to replacement dogs having to be trained for what was required in the scene.
Ethan Kelly's father walked out of the screening during the film's premiere in Michigan. He later said that the film was too real for him to deal with. He could not stand to watch his son suffer the conflict Ethan's character would endure during the story.
