Unsurprising demise for the show
Watching this episode I thought it was the second-to-last in the season. It's been running fairly parallel with the show after it, Elsbeth, which indeed has another episode after "tonight's" (these aired weeks ago, I'm behind on watching my recorded shows). I was feeling inclined to leave a rare review, before seeing another review - debfullofjoy - mention this was not only an unexpected sudden season finale, but an unplanned SERIES finale! Confirmed in the Trivia that it was JUST cancelled, seemingly not long before this aired! As Deb points out, sudden cancellations always suck because they can't write in an ending. And someone NEEDS to sit ALL of Hollywood down to get it through their heads that cliffhanger season finales are NOT acceptable, not EVER. This show is a perfect example of why not. They serve no actual purpose, despite writers' instincts to the contrary (fans will come back next season without them, looking forward to new content, a casual viewer won't start at the season finale, and is the only one who could be swayed by this as instinct dictates, curiosity to see where the cliffhanger goes), and if the show gets cancelled, like this, the cliffhanger is never resolved, leaving fans frustrated and punishing them for becoming invested in the show. Don't punish your fans like that!
The reason I had wanted to write a review was to talk about the terrible direction this season has been going. I figure THIS is the reason for the cancellation, making viewing unpleasant. This season Margaret FINALLY got to be named partner, but oops, the firm is dying (WHY? The firm has been well established as large and successful, having a great reputation and getting plenty of business! Last season Margaret was winning cases left and right, getting tons of positive publicity for her and the firm), drowning under tight finances. The thing is, the writers have been making it very difficult to feel sympathy for or side with Margaret, the (partial) focus of this show! She is seen time and time again blowing off the people she relies on, and she keeps getting burned by it. Repeated instances of "I need to talk to you" (often with extreme urgency in their voice) and Margaret blowing past, replying "Not now", usually with a tone of she didn't even hear them, she's tunnel-visioned on something else, that's just her auto-response and she'll likely forget 5 minutes later that this person wanted a word. And this keeps coming back on her, she essentially lost Susan as a protege due to not properly addressing her concerns, at this point it is appalling that she STILL storms in with this "Not now" attitude! How many times does it take before she learns to pay more attention? In reality once is usually enough for anybody.
Honestly, most of us have enough struggles in our lives that it is NOT enjoyable seeing endless struggles in our entertainment. It's why it mystifies me how drama shows are so popular, don't we all have enough drama in our lives not to seek it in our entertainment? I feel like in this case, people reacted more logically. Watching Margaret struggle with hardships she didn't earn, watching this sinking ship that seems like it cannot be saved, is PAINFUL. We grew attached in the first season to this firm and these people, it hurts to watch them drowning like this. Roseanne in the 90s launched the idea of entertaining us with struggling, but it's SO difficult to pull off, struggling while being enjoyable entertainment, other shows shouldn't try it, and I don't think it can be applied to a struggling COMPANY. And having a large, successful company struggling out of nowhere? It's so illogical it doesn't work to be enjoyable.
My biggest regret over this cancellation is the bright spot of the season, adding Heather Morris of Glee fame as a recurring character and love interest. They dragged their feet in getting her and Todd off the ground, now they've run out of time for us to see where this goes. She's a notably more intelligent and savvy character than she was in Glee, VERY charming, easygoing, warm, helpful to Todd, and again quite likeable like she was in Glee. I've really enjoyed seeing her in a different role, and now it's over. Pity. Season 1 made it seem like the gorgeous and intelligent Susan would be eventually getting back together with Todd (despite her being in a relationship, he's so dull he seemed doomed), but that seemed immediately gone this season, faded to nothingness before Heather's Judy was even in the picture. Todd's interest in her was erased by his career recovering, what? He's a more viable romantic interest but no attempt to apply this new-found confidence to seducing Susan? Whatever.
Still, sad to see the show go.
