Locarno, Switzerland — Originally announced as a movie re-teaming, post “Southpaw,” Antoine Fuqua and Jake Gyllenhaal’s “The Man Who Made It Snow” is now set up at Epix as a limited TV series, Fuqua said Saturday at Locarno Festival, where he will present Denzel Washington-starrer “The Equalizer 2” at the 8,000 seat Piazza Grande, one of the biggest open-air cinemas in Europe.
Inspired by the true story of Max Mermelstein, a Jewish hotel engineer who becomes embroiled unwittingly and then unwillingly in the building billion-dollar U.S. drug trade of Pablo Escobar’s Medellin Cartel, “The Man Who Made It Snow” was originally written by Michael Kingston and Brett Tabor. A new screenwriter is now being brought in to transform the movie into a drama series. Gyllenhaal may or may not be involved, according to his schedule, said Fuqua.

Coming off the back of The Magnificent Seven, Denzel Washington and director Antoine Fuqua are set to go their separate ways, with the former lining up Oscar hopeful Fences and Inner City. Fuqua, meanwhile, will soon be busy lensing The Man Who Made It Snow and upcoming documentary, American Dream American Knightmare.
How and ever, those hoping for a Magnificent Seven reunion anytime soon will be disappointed to learn that The Equalizer 2, previously penciled in for release on September 29, 2017, will now begin filming next September.
At least, that’s according to producer Todd Black (via Collider), who revealed during a recent Q&A session that while the script is done, stacked schedules mean that the action sequel won’t be prepped for production until late next year.
The script is done. We start shooting right after Labor Day, maybe right before Labor Day depending on Denzel’s schedule. So...

Even as the first domestic deals begin to trickle out here, the European Film Market kicked off today in Berlin against a uniquely challenging economic and geopolitical backdrop. Currencies are in flux, but the first international market of the year could also be an opportunity for European studios to flex some muscle — if they can afford it.
Peppering the bumpy landscape here are the strong dollar, stuttering euro, record-low oil prices — and their impact on economies like Russia — fears over security in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris and, if that wasn’t enough, the possibility of Greek default and exit from the euro. The currency issues will impact buying, but international and domestic indie distributors need product to fill their 2016 slates giving this market potential. Plus, Harvey is already making headlines.

As announced in Berlin's European Film Market, The Weinstein Company will co-finance and distribute "The Man Who Made It Snow" in the Us. Jake Gyllenhaal stars in this biopic of notorious 80's cocaine smuggler Max Mermelstein, who at the time was the only American alive ever admitted to the inner circle of the Colombian cocaine cartel. The screenplay, from Brett Tabor and Michael Kingston, is based on Mermelstein's autobiography of the same name. An unrecognizable Gyllenhaal built up 15 pounds of muscle for Fuqua as Junior Middleweight Champion Billy “The Great” Hope in "Southpaw," which TWC has already slated for release later this year. A version of this story first appeared in the Dec. 12 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. In the days leading up to November's American Film Market, producers of The Man Who Made It Snow raced to close a deal with Jake Gyllenhaal to star as the Jewish engineer who infiltrated the Medellin drug cartel and helped build Pablo Escobar's empire. But negotiations became hung up on Gyllenhaal's payday for the $35 million indie film. Only a few years ago, an actor like Gyllenhaal — who vacillates between full-fee studio movies and low-pay indie fare — might have

Exclusive: Jake Gyllenhaal won fans for his dedication and commitment in losing 25 pounds to play the sociopathic nocturnal adrenaline junkie and camera man Lou Bloom in Nightcrawler. He’s remade himself in a whole different physical fashion to play a championship prize fighter next year in Southpaw, and I’m betting it will have Gyllenhaal in the conversation with past actors who’ve trained to turn in memorable ring performances, a list that includes Raging Bull’s Robert De Niro, The Boxer‘s Daniel Day-Lewis, The Fighter‘s Mark Wahlberg and The Hurricane’s Denzel Washington.

Exclusive: With the Afm wrapped late last week, Im Global is reporting robust sales despite what many considered to be a lackluster market. Stuart Ford’s Reliance-backed production, financing and sales company had what Ford says was one of the strongest AFMs in Im Global’s 7.5 year history. The success is part of a strategy of building relationships and a profile in growth markets like Latin America and Asia — bringing filmmakers to market to speak directly to buyers doesn’t hurt either.

Jake Gyllenhaal is set to reteam with Southpaw director, Antoine Fuqua, for a new drama called The Man Who Made It Snow. I don't know if you've seen Gyllenhaal's Nightcrawler yet, but he was incredible in that. The actor took his talents to a whole other level with the character he played in that. His performance definitely got me excited for whatever he did next.
This new project is being written by Michael Kingston and Brett Tabor, and the film is based on the true story of Max Mermelstein, "a Jewish hotel engineer, who transforms a small mom and pop drug organization into a billion-dollar enterprise known as the Medellin Cartel."
This role gives Gyllenhaal yet another edgy thriller to work within, and it has been proven that he and Fuqua make a solid filmmaking team.

A decade ago, when the Afm forged in to replace Mifed in November, it was a bastion of B-movies with B-List stars hawking themselves in multiple films, and a slew of deals that often didn’t result in anything. Now, with studios only wanting to finance sequels and superhero movies, and requiring partners to fully fund or partly pay for everything else on their slates, indie companies have new currency and are dealing with some of the biggest films in the business, with everyone from Gary Ross (The Free State Of Jones) to Quentin Tarantino (The Hateful 8) in Santa Monica courting foreign buyers.
As it sheds the schlockfest stigma the Afm once bore, attendees are focused on the increased importance of offshore returns and a more disciplined approach to the business. There’s a lot of money in the market, but rigor is key while packaging has become tougher as...

Every now and then Hollywood gets into a race to see who can adapt a subject in the quickest and/or the best manner possible. We've seen it with asteroids, animated insects, and more recently the life and times of Steve Jobs. Another race that's been run on a more quiet level is the story of the Medellin Cartel . a drug smuggling operation that supplied up to 80% of the world's supply of cocaine between 1976 and 1993. While we've seen two documentaries on the subject of Pablo Escobar and his Cocaine Cowboys, a biopic has yet to materialize. All of that is about to change, as the life story of Escobar compatriot Max Mermelstein is picking up speed. News broke through Variety that Antoine Fuqua and Jake Gyllenhaal are re-teaming after their work on Southpaw to make The Man Who Made It Snow - a film adapted from the Mermelstein memoir of...
