The original screenplay was a satire on slasher film conventions with an emphasis on witty dialogue. The changes during principal photography then turned the story into a experimental horror piece with a David Lynch touch.
The roles of the barkeeper and the gas station attendant were added spontaneously on set. The characters were played by non-actors, who occupied these jobs in real life and agreed to play versions of themselves.
After arriving on set Mathieu Carrière decided that the script should be only a vague guide line when shooting a movie. So he improvised all his dialogue and added new plot elements. Therefore he claimed the writing credit.
